In fact, he changed more than just his name. Malcolm completed his political and spiritual transformation and his philosophy evolved fully after his 1964 pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest site for Muslims." "To have an insight into Malcolm's transformation, one must reflect on the hajj taking place right now, culminating with a celebration called Eid Al Adha or Festival of Sacrifice, to be held in North America on Tuesday. This festival is the holiest religious celebration on the Muslim calendar, which is why it's also called the Great Festival." "The hajj is a time for atonement, repentance, humility and total submission to the one God, the creator, the cherisher and the sustainer. In this period, Muslims follow in the footsteps of Prophet Abraham - Ibrahim in Arabic - and his family, remembering their trials and sacrifices." "Malcolm X, after learning the true message of the Prophet, demonstrated it in inspiring words, indeed. He said, 'What most impressed me with the hajj is the brotherhood, the people of all races, colour, from all over the world coming together as one. It has proved to me the power of the one God. ...Everything about the hajj atmosphere accented the oneness of man under one God.'" "As we celebrate Eid, remembering Malcolm, we must not forget the oppressed around the world. We must remember and pray for an end to the sufferings induced on the people of Afghanistan, Kashmir and the dying Iraqi children. We must pray for the freedom of the Chechen and Palestinian people who are under oppressive occupation, whose blood has been made cheaper than all others, and for whose protection no actions have been taken. The loss of their children, parents, relatives, neighbours and homes deprive them of the same opportunity we have to celebrate and enjoy Eid." |
