slm,

I am having a lot of trouble with my skin from the water i use for doing wudu 5 times a day or more. I have bad rashes, open wounds and hives from scratching (it really itches) that wont go away no matter what i try. I know part of the problem is the water is drying out my skin. I have always had excema which had been under control until i started rinsing with the water. I am going crazy with this, and i dread and am reluctant to do wudu because i know how my skin is going to feel afterwards. I have tried all the creams and medicated creams to try to control this problem and nothing is working. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had the same problem too-

Check your water supply- it may be hard water- and you will need a filter.

If you do wipe dry after wudu- use a cotton towel and pat dry- do not rub.

If the water supply is the problem, creams will probably do more harm than good. This is because the deposits left on your skin are rubbed in with the moistureizer.

Also there are "rulings" for those with skin ailments on wudu- check Islam Q&A.

You do not have to wudu for each salat, only if it breaks.  Also, it is permisable to wash each part only once for wudu : 3 times is preferred, but once is permissable.

slm,

Oh THAT website! I have been trying to find it here... I know the site you are talking about. I once asked a question (totally unrelated to wudu). I'll  go take a look now.
I didn't know you could wash once rather than three times. I had thought it was obligatory to do it three time. Thanks for the information:-):)

Dear Sister Savannah,

Wa-alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah.

May Allah (swt) grant you relief, and reward you for your suffering.

I have initiated some investigation into this very question, for I know of someone in *exactly* the same situation you are in.

Some advice:

1. I presume you have tried both grease-based and water-based products to treat the dryness that results from contact with water? Such as Yellow Soft Paraffin, White Emulsifying Cream, or Diprobase. If you have an allergy to lanolin, as many eczema sufferers do, then avoid the first two.
2. Immediately after making wudu, pat-dry your skin to remove traces of the water, thus limiting it’s effect, bi’ithnillah ta’ala.
3. *Immediately* after making wudu, apply *liberally* a cream which will help the skin regain and retain it’s moistness. If you can, try something like Diprobase, which is water-based and hence will not make your skin feel greasy.
4. Without delay, learn – according to whichever madhab you adhere to (if you do) – the *obligatory* aspects of wudu, as distinct from that which is mandoub [recommended], thereby allowing you to minimise your contact with water.
5. It may well be in your sitiuation that you are permitted to avail yourself of what is known as a *rukhsa* [dispensation] to make tayyamum [dry ablution] rather than wudu. Some of the Ulema I have approached have told me that in a situation where water *definitely* causes harm to the self, or exacerbates the condition (i.e.e eczema), it becomes wajib [obligatory] on you to take the rukhsa, for it is not allowed for one to harm oneself, and nor did the Shar’iah come for this. Wallahu ta’ala a’lam.

Indeed one of the Mufti’s I approached told me that in this situation it was allowed to make tayyamum. This was according to the Hanafi fiqh.

However, other Hanafi Ulema stipulated that what one needs to do in order to help establish if the rukhsa is valid for one to take, is to obtain from a *Muslim* doctor, testimony, or corroboration that indeed water is worsening the condition, after which this can be presented to a qualified Mufti who can thus issue a fatwa for you about the matter.
A student of the Shafi’i fiqh told me that there would be no question of taking the rukhsa under such circumstances according to their madhab.

Please note, I am *not* giving you a fatwa/hukm, I am merely relating some information about an *identical* case to yours, hoping that it may be of some assistance to you, perhaps a sort of startpoint for your investigation. What you need to enquire about is whether you are eligible for the rukhsa, and if in your circumstances, you could make tayyamum instead of wudu.

Should you require further details, please email me with your above question. I don’t mean Instant Message me, but *email me*, and I will endeavour to obtain an answer for you, or direct you accordingly. My own advice – with no disrespect to anyone, may Allah (swt) reward everyone who came to assist you – would be *not* to take a fatwa from an indirect source like the internet, unless you have absolutely no other recourse, because the type of fatwa you require is one of specificity, and the realities addressed in a fatwa on a website may not be identical to yours, thereby affecting the ruling relevant to your own personal situation. Wallahu a’lam.

Have you also tried creams/ointments like Elocon and Fucidin to treat the eczema in it’s advanced from? My apologies if I am asking about measures you’ve already undertaken, it is just that some of these treatments have not been around so long, and so not everyone is aware of them. I don’t mean to irritate you by these suggestions, for I know what it is like when people make suggestions without knowing whether you’ve already tried their suggested treatments.

I hope this helps, and solicit your forgiveness if I caused you further anguish or any annoyance by my words.

Ma’assalam,

Abu Khaled
