Haaris, please tell me about what it's like to be a lawyer.  What kind of law do you practice?  Have you ever been in any controversial cases?  Is there ever moral conflict?  Does being Muslim pose a challenge?  Does it give you a better appreciation of Islamic law?  Any cool stories/cases you can tell us about?

That's a lot of questions :)

I guess I have this romanticized notion of what it is to be a lawyer.  If I were more articulate it's something I would definitely look into, I would love to work for CAIR or some other Muslim organization and defend the Muslim cause.

Masha'Allah se7en, I think your very articulate and I think you would make a great lawyer.  I really hope that you do go into law and use the profession for the benefit of the Muslim Ummah.  One thread was just talking about this-how we all have different strenghths and that we should use these strengths fisibilillah.  I think many people on this board would agree with me when I say one of your strenghts is with words & language-which is what one needs to form solid arguments!

I haven't heard se7en speak, but from what I see in her posts, I think she should go into some writing career.  Muslim writer, journalist, something like that.  Writing and speaking are two very different skills.  I've seen great writers who are terrible speakers, and vice versa.

Use your power of the pen.  I think Muslims in America need that.  Although lawyers are also needed.

Another thing:  I don't think being articulate is something that makes someone a good lawyer.  Lawyers deal more with paperwork than anything else.  A good lawyer has sound and deep knowledge of the laws, their implications/loopholes/interpretations (or differences therein), etc.  A lawyer, in my understanding, spends more time stiffling through paperwork and law books than he/she does arguing in a court in front of a judge.

Mayber haaris can shed more light on this.

Wassalamu alaikum.

All I can say is that if you guys ever met me you'd be seriously dissappointed in my lack of eloquence.

Hey se7en, just let your pen do the talking! Your writing is eloquent mashallah.

BTW, we haven't seen a se7en original for a while. When is my wait going to end (it has been a few months now)? :)

Salaams :-)

[B]Sr. Se7en[/B] I used to write alot but as yet I have only completed one islamic short story written at the age of 16 (I'm 19 now)It is a bit much to type up for the board plus I could do with a pre-read by yourself before I place it on the board for public viewing...

Another thing...It deals with controversial issues.  However it is a good story for the discerning reader.

Ok everyone keep writing perhaps we can open a short story thread for us junior writers... :)

Asalaamu aleikoum,

Hmm, to be a lawyer ...

I made the decision to be a lawyer before I became Muslim (although I became Muslim a year or so before I finally qualified) and I think I first made the decision to be a lawyer because I realised as a kid that I'd be too short to be a Policeman (give me a break, I was only a kid!!).

I practice intellectual property and IT law: i.e. all the stuff about the internet, contracts, copyright and that kind of thing.  I am a non-contentious lawyer so I have never do all the "LA Law" courtroom dramatics: Ally McBeal, I'm not.

To a large extent, Arsalan is right: articulacy is a bonus not a necessity for a lawyer.  From your posts, I think that you would make a fantastic lawyer, Se7en, because you have the right kind of mind: see problem, see solution connect one to the other with proofs.

In my job, I deal constantly with contracts and need to be able to tell my clients (in plain English) first, what the defects and risks are in the contract and secondly, how to make it a better contract.

However, the main skill for a lawyer these days is time management!  Clients all want everything done yesterday so you have to manage your time efficiently and prioritise accordingly.

I've had no real controversial cases nor moral dilemmas.  The nearest that I get to this is the fact that I must ply my trade in the larger firms (what with smaller firms not having the kind of client base to demand it) and therefore I run the risk of having to work for clients such as banks, tobacco companies, distillers, etc.

I would actually rather like to get involved with a Muslim organisation who could use a pro bono lawyer from time to time, so if any of you have any contacts, let me know ...

Does that answer your questions, Se7en?  Probably not but I hope so.

Salaam

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

Wow, jazak Allahu khayran, that's awesome Haaris.  Yeah, you answered my questions.

Hahah, I figured you to be more the Law & Order type...

[haaris pacing in front of witness on the stand, pensive look]
haaris:  but I thought you said you were home on the night of the 23rd?!
witness: I ah... uhh.. [breaks down sobbing]
haaris:  You killed him didn't you!!! Murderer!
other lawyer [leaping from his chair]: objection!
[jury gasps... stunned silence then loud whispers in the court room]
judge: order! order I say!
haaris:  withdrawn.. [knowing smile]

heheh :)

What you do sounds awesome though... you'd definitely be an asset to a Muslim organization.. I'll ask around inshaAllah :)
