256K ram? lol , oh man. I hope you mean 256MB of ram, 256K won't get you past the boot screen hehe ;)

Win98 is ok, yeah it is unstable. Depends on what you want to do. If you just want to surf the net and do word processing than stick with Win NT, but if you want more multimedia/games applications then stick with Win 98 or Millenium Edition.

NS 6.1 has a crummy java based GUI. I say skip it. If you are like me, and you like NS then just stick with the 4.0X version.

Windows 98 is unstable?  NO!!! It is VERY stable.  Make sure you install Windows 98 SE (Second Edition).  First edition had so many bugs.  I am using Millenium on my laptop and that is really buggy.  Forget windows NT, for the kind of stuff you do you will just need Windows 98 SE.  Make sure you have a good graphics card so you can do raytracing, photoshop work, etc.

Netscape is total junk, it is soooo slow and 6.1 is a complete waste.  Go with Internet Explorer it is so much faster.  I used to be a Netscape foo but then I converted and have discovered the joy of IE. :)

Hmm, i think that is a seperate browser setting. My fonts aren't any bigger than the font sizes of the rest of the posts.

Assalaamu alaikum,

To put is simply I DON'T like Windows 95/98/98SE/Me! It is just too unstable. I had so many problems like boot process getting aborted, hanging for no apparent reason, blue screen of deaths, and occasionally going into sleep mode when multiple applications are running (pathetic multi tasking). I moved to NT like 3 years ago and it is absolutely fabulous (I have lost the fear of crashes and don't hit save like every 2 min :)). I use Windows NT at home and Windows 2000 at my work place. With 256 MB of memory I would recommend go with win2000 (SR1 is out). It is not limited like NT (no USB support, limited gaming capability, only directx 3.0 support, and fewer choices for multimedia hardware).

Another thing, for 256 MB of memory win 98 is useless. Win98 cannot manage memory well beyond 64 MB. My collegue in the lab continued to use Win 98 and his PC was alway down :) Finally, he has moved to win 2000.

Arshad is right, IE is much faster and better now. Netscape somehow lost it after version 4. I haven't tried the 6.1 so I cannot comment on that. If you want to use netscape use 4.76.

My sentiments exactly! 128MB maybe...  But only open one window at a time! ;)

What about the Pentium 4s?  Anyone use one??

So what kind of comp is your jannah.org server on??

I was going to get a Pentium 4 1.4 gigahertz system at work, but then I decided, why?  So I got a PIII 850, 15" active matrix, 16 meg tnt 2 card, 256 megs, 20 gig drive, built in cd recorder and more, so I can take it home with me or anywhere else and copy stuff on CD.  :)

But this guy at work got one, it takes a lot to cool that system.

Anyways this is a good site to test how fast your system really is (benchmark wise)
http://wintune.winmag.com/

Let's see who has the fastest system, hehehehe.  Make sure you have a good graphics card cause that can make such a huge difference.

slm,

im with br arshad on this one... windows in general sucks, but as far as home use goes, win 98se is probably the best... ive heard that win me just isnt worth it... it just has a few small additions and improvements.

yes, windows nt is more stable... but it invlves a littl emore tech know-how to get it running the way you want it... and theres the issue of compatibility... win nt is more stable, cause microsoft had to sacrifice some stuff like compatibility for it to be that stable. thats why windows 98 is less stable cause its more compatible with a wider range of hardware and software. and also windows nt has more demanding system requirements, but in your case with a p3 800 and 256mb of ram, it should be no problem :)

and about ns6.... IT SUCKS!!! nuff said :) im really disappointed at how ns navigator has gone from bad to worse after version 3. ie5.5 rocks... nuff said :)

ma'salaam,

Assalaamu alaikum,

I got a Dell P4 1.5 GHz system for my office. It has 256 MB of RDRAM, 40 gig drive, GeForce2 graphics card with 32 MB of ram, dvd-rom, etc ! Oh, and a a 19" FSD Trinitron monitor, which is awesome. I ordered the system on the very day P4s were announced. If I had waited a few days and seen the benchmarks I would had gotten a Athlon 1.2 GHz instead. The performance of the P4 on many applications is less than the Athlon and sometimes even the PIII 1 GHz. The P4 has a new micro architecture and the applications have to be optimized for it to produce better performance. But that will take a while if at all (remember the hype about MMX?). So if someone wants to get a top of the line PC get a Athlon 1.2 GHz. As I didn't pay for my system I don't feel bad :) It is good for the lab as Intel systems generally have better upgrade paths.

Regarding the OSs, I will again say go with Windows 2000 Professional. It may be expensive but it has the stability of NT (from my 3 months experience) and the features of win98SE/Me. WinNT 4.0 I will not recommend for an only family PC as someone may like to play games :) For me it is okay 'coz I don't play complicated games. Hmm, another thing, winNT/2000 produces better benchmark results on modern PCs than win98.

That's Microsoft's marketing line so that they can brand the NT for business and win9x for consumers. It is not true. Also, I don't think Jannah and co. will have any problems :)

as-Salaamu 'Alaykum,
Windows Shmindows...I like Linux.  You want stability...Linux.  But to add a disclaimer, that's my personal opinion :).  I actually have a dual-boot machine Linux and Windows 98, it works out really well.
I used Netscape 6.x and the only reason I do is because I've ported everything to it and I don't want to switch again.  But overall I hate it.  Yeah, it's cool that you can get updates that are OS independent, but it's slow so my opinion is 'who cares?' :).
     Those were my two cents.

Take care,

Zubaid K.

what other geeky things can we talk about? programs we like.. i can't live without qvterm, ftp, winzip, photoshop and publisher they're my life.. in fact if i went another way in life i think i shoulda been a graphic designer...

i think good decision to stick to wat u have...every other day new softwares and upgrades come up and they have become a major expense in addition to hardware

did u use 3D-Studio, one of my friends use it to make animaterd commercials, very kewl effects...

once i also wanted to go into graphics when i took it as an elective and learnt very nice things, however, job market needed Database expertise.

if i were to change my career, i wud go for something tht directly help the mankind and say chao to computer science... i guess not a very geeky thing to say:)

Yep, these are my staple applications also. For telnet I use Tera Term Pro, a free, simple, small, and stable emulator.

Has anyone used X-windows emulators for PCs. All the stuff out there are shareware (with restrictions) and expensive. Moreover they are overloaded with features that I don't really need. I just want a simple graphical interface to my UNIX machine so that I can run simple applications. Long time ago I had a simple and free X-emulator but it got destroyed in an upgrade and now I can't find it. X-Win32 is too bulky and it only runs 2 hour sessions ('coz I don't want to shell out big bucks!). Any suggestions?

For graphics, I have been a long time CorelDraw user. I use it primarily for vector diagrams. I have absolutely no ethetic sense so graphic design is quantum mechanics to me!

wlm,
i used to use good old x-windows on the sun machines at school. terra term sounds like it would be more stable than qvterm i'll try it out...

i'm also trying out more of the weirder digital art software programs like Bryce.. it is definitely really amazing what you can do with it
