slm,

What do female converts do? From what i have been able to read on different islamic websites is that it is usually someone male who is related to the sister. But what about reverts who do not have any male family members who are muslim? I know the guardian must be male and muslim. Do i really need one? If so, how do i find one? What is their purpose? I hope i am not asking something that has already been discussed in detail like music. If it has, could someone tell me where i can get this information? Thank you:-)

In such cases people usually ask the Masjid imam to be their walee.  Maybe that can work for you too (?)

As-salamu alakium Sister Savannah
I went through the same experience, not having any male family members who were muslim.  I personally think its important to have especially as a new muslim, because people tell you crazy things for example: you need to get married asap or that you need to change your name; just to name a few of my experiences.
Having a walee can help you answer many questions that you may have concerning Islam; its kind of similar to going to your dad for answers b/c you know he will give the correct answer and well try to protect you from what ever harm there is out in this world (even from brothers named Abdul). I would highly suggest getting one if you can.
Now how it get one is the hard part depending on the resoucers that you have around you. You would want to look for some one who is knowledgeable in many aspects. One who you feel comfortable around, one who will tell you the truth not things that you want to hear and most importantly someone who has experince. Its similar to the relationship that you have with your father or would like to have with your father.  Another thing that I would suggest is someone who is older, probably someone close to your fathers age, you know older then you (someone you would not consider in marriage).

****I am not saying to do like I did but these are the things that I looked for or found in my walee.  And I have to say that he is the BEST :)
But it would be way better if my dad could be that islamic guardin, inshallah one day :)

*One more thing, when those brothers start asking for you(if they havent already) your walee is someone who can help you in that process.

slm,

Thanks for the advice. I am going to go to a mosque closer to me so i can see what i can find out there. At least, i know how to begin looking. For some reason, i am not comfortable at the original mosque especially since it takes me over an hour and a half to get there. I had the same problems with people (well-meaning i am sure) telling me to get married asap and changing my name too.
