wlm,

anonymous real audio is streaming audio, that means when you connect to it, it start's downloading bit by bit and you can listen to it as you do so. if you are on a telephone modem you definitely don't want to wait half an hour to download something and then listen to it. that's why real audio was such a revolutionary audio compression and deploying method.  there are other audio formats like .wav or .aiff or .mp3 which you can download outright, but you will also be sitting there a long time waiting for it.

much of the audio on the web is in real audio because it is perfect for telephone modem users and most every other country in the world where they have extremely slow bandwiths and connections.  also the real audio format prevents people from pilfering unauthorized audio and placing it on their own sites.

Assalaamu alaikum,

If you want to listen to an audio repeatedly it is nice to have the file downloaded on the computer. Some sites do provide separate links for saving and listening to the audio (eg http://islaam.com/audio/).

For many sites you *can* download the actual file but you have to do a little work. Right click on the link and click save target as to save the file on the computer. The file will most probably have the extension .ram (or .ra). Open the file in a text editor. There will be a single URL inside, which is the location of the actual real audio file. Copy and paste that into the browser and press enter. The browser will ask you whether to save or open the file. Save it. Now you can listen to the file without connecting to the internet.

However, some sites use a script to redirect the file name to the browser. I don't know how to get the location of the file from that. There must be a way, I just haven't figured it out yet.

Yeah right. I have pilfered most of the nasheeds on the jannah.org/resources site!

Wasalaam.

maaan did you have to figure out how do that! now i'm going to have to move them all to a non downloadable directory...

see i wouldn't mind at all if ppl downloaded them onto their hard drives and used them for personal enjoyment but it is extremely annoying when other websites steal the stuff!!

ugh you know the cnn hajj site has a site linked in pakistan which has the mamalist (an old version)!! AND they have the nerve to list themselves as the authors in the source. AND many times sites turn out to be missionary/messedup and yes even XXX sites later on and i have to take them off... and since they have a static version the old versions will never be corrected...
why they can't just add a link i don't know??

Hmmm, I don't understand? Why is this a problem. Copyright or something? The procedure I mentioned is well know. Actually, real.com site has all the details and most sites audio are configered this way.

I don't like real audio, mp3 is the way to go, and the way to burning CDs. :)

Assalaamu alaikum,

There is not much one can do to prevent others from copying pages. Yes it is very annoying. One of the rules of the web is to link to the source rather than copy a static version. But the web is filled with amatures and professional with ulterior motives :(

Regarding the audio files, there is less of a danger (assuming there is not copyright restrictions) because files don't change over time. Also, each file is stamped with the source that cannot be changed.

Anyway, you can remove my post above if you think it too revealing :)

alas when i coded the files i never stamped them thinking i wouldn't need to..
i guess in the long run it's good to have islamic things spread through the internet but ppl then just copy and are not motivated to create and add to what's there

As salaamu alaykum,

I know this is going way off the subject, but how do you actually get some audio from tape to a real player format?
Is there some sort of chant I have to do, and booom!, it becomes real player? Or do I need to find Merlin the Wizard?

slm,

you can download a realaudio file only if its usin http for streaming... if its a realaudio pnm server, then you cant save it.

and i agree w/ sr. jannah... saving files for personal use is ok, but putting it on another site is not cool... unless the owner of the file has requested for people to make mirror sites for it.

but yeah, realaudio is good for when you just want to listen to something, and mp3 is good for downloading (unless you have a lot of bandwidth and you can listening to streaming mp3s ;-D )

ma'salaam

off topic..
i've seen alot of things that have been recycled online..stuff i've seen on other sites before i've seen stuff for instance on jannah's site etc..or some ppl are just like minded etc...?

but i agree it's not cool to copy sites etc...but if someone's just listing their fave things...well you can't help it if someone put it on their site as well...esp since it didn't originate on one particular website you know? or someone decided to go 'public' with their own treasures etc ;)

anyways...linkings nice..but i think crediting is def the way to go...unless if it's something that's just found all over the place etc..like absolutely common..i don't know..but in regards to content..like if it's something special which you totally did on your own..it isn't cool if someone mimics it..or makes an obvious copycat version and esp w/o crediting you......OUCH! and GRRRRRRR! ;)
