Take care,

Brother Khalid, is the mouth and foot disease scaring you that much that you are interested in camel meat? ;)

Oh sure laugh it up why don't you!

Our lack of red meat and the expense thereof is not a topic for jest I'll have you know ;-)

There must be some camel connoisseurs out there. Or maybe widen it out to unusual food people have eaten.

Anyone ever had octopus?

Well it doesn't taste like chicken :)
I had camel kabobs; the taste isn't that different from typical red meat taste. It's just that its consistency is sort of in between lamb and beef. I think I would try it again.
I remember my uncle holds a minority opinion in fiqh that you have to do ablution after eating it, so he made me go and do wudu after i ate. :) [slm]

I've had squid before.  Its a bit rubbery a little difficult to chew, but still very good.  I highly recommend it.  :)

You what?

Is that because it has a very strong aroma?

Uhh, well I can't comment on the reasoning, but I don't remember it having a strong aroma. Imam Ahmad holds the opinion that you do wudu after eating camel meat, the majority of others don't. [slm]

I had calimari (squid legs fried up in a batter yumm) by mistake once in miami. It's not really tasty at all and just the thought of eating squid makes me ill even now.

I had squid once too!  But only because I mispronounced what I *really* wanted! I was going for angel haired pasta..."capallini" or something, but I closed my menu and tried to tell the waiter...and all that came out was , "capa...cala..ca..." and he was quick to suggest, "ohhh, you mean calamari??" and I said, "YES! That was it" :(  Anyways, they looked like small rubber bands, which I mistakenly figured was "fried pasta" and ate quite happily.  Until my father was like..."this smells like fish."  I said, "Come on, Abu, its pasta..duh!"  Then the waiter came by again, and I asked.. "Why does this smell like fish?"  And he kinda gave me this, "Why do I always have to deal with the idiots" look and said..."because its squid.." At which point I almost threw up :)

Br. ;-), I suggest you go with chicken. :)

Take Care,

So we have a few here who have tried calamari.  Make sure you dip it in that tangy red sauce.   My favorite kind of fish is grilled salmon.  Its nice, soft, and moist.

I think most of us have had cow brains or beef tongue once in our lives.  I remember when I was a little kid having it once, and told my mom, that's it, I'm not having this again.

Se7en I though I remember sharks tasting a bit dry.

Hmmm, I think that was the problem.  You guys cooked it in marine science when you were supposed to dip it in marinara sauce.  :)

Assalamu alaikum,

Since we are on the subject of odd things to eat, how 'bout haggus?? I never ate it -alhamdolellah, but it sounds disgusting.  Some Middle Easterners cook something slightly similar called "Karsha".  It stinks.  My mom & aunts and uncles absolutely love it and consider it a delicacy.  If you are easily grossed out, don't read beyond this sentence!!

Karsha is basically sheep's stomach (cleaned & scraped), which is then stuffed with rice, herbs, and some meat, then sewed all up and cooked. The smell is blinding, can't imagine what the taste would be!!

I didn't mind calamari and ate few times actually.  I once ate fried squid legs...yummm -- extra crispy :) .  Last time I was in San Fran I was feeling a bit adventerous and tried charred cat fish ; surprisingly tastey!

as-Salaamu 'Alaykum,
Speaking of nastiness, isn't there an Egyptian cheese which is supposed to be a delicacy, and it is stored under ground for aaaaaggges and then eaten?  All my egyptian friends have told me it has this strong putrid smell, but apparently it's "good". :).

No, brie is okay.  Gorgonzola (Rockfor) cheese is the that blue moldy yucky stuff.  The Egyptian cheese is called "mish".  And it has worms in it -yikes- I hear.

Now that we have everyone's mouth watering, time to go and have supper. Yeah, right! In two days maybe!!

This past Eid Al-Adha, which was my first by the way, I watched the other brothers sacrifice 3 goats. I had a great time and we found out that we could do it legally in our backyards, so we did it at the Imam's house.

So anyways, when they were skinning and degutting the first goat, they pulled out two white oval looking things and put them in a dish. I asked what they were and was told that they were the testicles and that they save them and cook them. :o So like a person with sheltered tastes I naturally said "Ewwww!" and proclaimed "I'm not going to eat those!"

Some of you may already see where this story is going. ;-)

So it's time to eat! There's several dishes on the table and I have no idea what is what, EXCEPT for the rice! But, I wasn't going to let that ruin my first Eid Al-Adha so I took some of everything. I could tell something was up when the Imam kept  asking me: "do you want some kidneys?" "did you try any kidneys?" "kidneys are pretty good, right brother Yusuf?" But I didn't let it get to my head cause, yes, the "kidneys" were pretty good!

Well GUESS WHAT. Later on that day he tells me, "brother Yusuf, the kidneys were the testicles."

I was talking to an Egyptian brother in my Masjid about this "Karsha"

His parents used to cook it when he was back home and he absolutley HATED it!!

I have to admit though, it was great fun describing the dish to him and watching his face slowly cringe ;-)

Br Yusuf are you trying to put us off kidney for good? ;)

Great story ;-)

Haggus is GREAT, especially with mashed potatoes, see you have to eat properly cooked haggus to enjoy it. Mish is absolutely gross.

Bro Yusuf, next Eid make sure you ask which organ you are eating heh :)
