giving gifts to non-muslims

Assalam Aleikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakutuhu!

I recently had a small debate with my roomie. We were invited by a non-muslim colleague at work for dinner. He suggested taking something with us to present it to them. I said good idea! but then he mentioned that he had some candies packets with him which he received on new year from his employer but not eaten it since it had in its ingredients certain things that were not halal. So he said we could give it to them since it's ok for them to have it.

Well, I disagreed there. My thought was it should not be ok to give haram things to even non-muslims cuz its haram for all human beings. Its just that in their ignorance they refuse to acknowledge it. Suppose someone drinks wine, then we as muslims should not give him a bottle of wine as gifts.

Any ideas, hadiths, ayahs that you guys can bring to my attention? and of course your thoughts on this!

Wassalam

Momin, I don't have a direct answer to your specific question, but the ruling regarding givnig wine is very clear from the Hadith of the Prophet (pbuh) in which he cursed the person who drinks it, and the person who serves it, and the person who sells it, and the person who produces it, and the person who packages it, and the person who carries it, etc.

Wallahu a'lam.

Salaam 'Alaikum

Momin:

My husband told me the exact same thing which Arsalan said, in regards to us (Muslims) selling or giving things to non Muslims which are haram for us from the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Might I add that I think it is a lovely and thoughtful idea to give a gift to your  host?
