Can someone find out if it is even halal for the pope to pray in masjid? Also I don't understand how the Muslims and Christians are going to pray together? That part is totally beyond me.

Before I became Muslim- the Muslims allowed me to pray in the mosque. Also, there is nothing in our prayers that the Cathlic religion would not agree on.

Aslamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

1] Say: "O Al-Kāfirūn (disbelievers in Allāh)

2] "I worship not that which you worship,

3] "Nor will you worship that which I worship

4] "And I shall not worship that which you are worshipping.

5] "Nor will you worship that which I worship.

6] "To you be your religion, and to me my religion ."

Suurah 109 Suurah Al-kaafiroon (The disbelievers)

If we Muslims will not worship that which the Kuffaar (disbelievers) are worshipping, How can we pray together?

Seems like another pathetic attempt by the Muslims to please and befriend the deceitful Kuffaar, Allahu'wa Allim.

wa salam

1. It is HARAM to pray at a tomb.  Muslims are not even supossed to pray at the tomb of the Prophet (SAW).

2. It is impossible for Chrsitians and Muslims to pray together, as the muslims pray to Allah but the Xtians pray to Jesus.

3. If a group of Xtians wants to pray in a masjid, this is allowed : either the Prophet (SAW) or Umar (RA) allowed this.  However, this being the Pope, and bearing in mind all he stands for, I do not think it is appropriate in this case.  In addition, if Xtians are being allowed to pray in a mosque, it should be done seperately from muslims.

Wallahu alam.

Assalamu alykum,

The Pope and the Muslim clerics *will not* pray together. That was a misunderstanding by the press. That article needs to be updated!

They will pray separately.

Go to www.iviews.com and search their archives, but i think it should be on their homepage still.

The prophet (S) allowed Christians to pray in a mosque. If it was haram I think the scholars of Syria would have said something, don't you think??

The scholars in Syria are not allowed to speak, unless it agrees with the official government line.

Da'wah in that country is virtually non-existent

Syrian Muslim Mufti - No Prayer Planned with Pope
By Issam Hamza

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syria's top Muslim authority said Friday there would be no joint Christian-Muslim prayer during Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II's historic visit to the Umayyad mosque in Damascus in May.

Syrian Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Kiftaro strongly denied during his weekly lecture that there would be a joint prayer during the visit, the first time a pope will enter a mosque, talk of which prompted protests by conservative Muslims.

``Reports that a joint Christian-Muslim prayer would be conducted at the Umayyad mosque are completely untrue. No decision or a ruling has been passed by the Mufti in this respect,'' a statement by Kiftaro's office quoted him as saying.

``He expressed astonishment at the circulation of such inaccurate reports without his knowledge or approval,'' it said.

Religious sources told Reuters that Kiftaro had been accused by some conservatives of approving a joint prayer during the pope's visit in May and that his statement could be meant to ease tension caused by the reports.

``Co-existence between Muslims and Christians does not require a joint prayer. It depends on a serious and principled action to support the causes of the oppressed in the world and to protect humanity from dangers surrounding it,'' Kiftaro said.

Syrian Catholic Bishop Izdor Battikha said in a statement on Wednesday the pope will deliver a speech to Muslims during his visit to the mosque when he is in Syria May 5-9, his first visit to the country, and that Kiftaro would deliver a reply speech.

Battikha said the pope would meet Kiftaro and other Islamic scholars in the mosque courtyard.

He said the pope would not pray in the building but have ``a quick silent glance at the tomb of John the Baptist (prophet Yahya) located inside the mosque.''

Tradition has it that the head of St. John the Baptist is buried under a pillar inside the Umayyad mosque, part of which had been used as a Christian church by the Byzantines.

Kiftaro said Muslims and Christians had lived together for centuries and, ``The only incidents which marred this unity was the crusade and the repressive measures committed by the Christian colonial powers against Muslims.''

Kiftaro said what Muslims had suffered more than Jews, to whom the pope apologized during his visit to Israel.

The 80-year-old pope, the most traveled pontiff in history, will also visit Malta on the trip, intended to re-trace the steps of St. Paul, who converted to Christianity in Syria and preached in Athens and Malta before arriving in Rome.

The Greek Orthodox Church, overcoming years of antagonism toward the Vatican, said earlier this month it would not object to the pope's visit this spring as part of his pilgrimage.
