Assalaamu-alaikum warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuhu

I have a complaint brothers. I am upset, and angry as to why these guys are charging $10 to come to thier talks? Why are they charging people for knowledge of the deen?

Did the Prophet Muhammed(saw) charge people, did the Sahaaba(RBU) charge people for to give them knowledge?

Why are these guys charging? I just cannot understand it. What are they playing at? This is the deen, the religion of Allah, Ta'ala, this is not some ticket to making quick money.

I'm sorry if i sound upset, but i am. Too often Brother Hamza Yusuf is charging for his lectures, and its getting to a point where i think this should be condemed outright.

Why the charge? Why not let the people in for free? Or a much smaller charge?

$10! Man what is this? $10 is my whole weeks supply off meat!

I'm sorry if i upset anyone, but i had to condemn this "pay for knowledge" approach that is becoming widespread.

I don't know what you are talking about brother.  $10 is extremely reasonable.  Who do you think pays for their expenses to fly out there?  This isn't free.  Who do you think pays for the usage of the facilities at the Hilton?  This isn't free.  Not to mention administrative costs, or even a little money to support their livelihood.

In fact $10 sounds more then reasonable.

I think sister jannah made a very good comment in response to something similar to this:
...ppl used to actually travel to acquire knowledge, now the most we do is like go to isna.. but alhamdulillah there are those today who use the media at hand to spread their knowledge, if we have to pay for them to make the tapes and package them as well as the costs for recording, etc why not..

btw about your costly islamic conference/conventions comment. those conventions do not hike up the prices to make a profit, the most they are trying to do is break even. (i know cuz i worked for isna for one painstaking summer) isna's hotel rates are dirt cheap.. you won't find any decent hotel at $99 bucks a night.. i know my company has easily spent up to $259 a night for hotels in big cities and not even blinked.
as for the cost of the registration, do you have any idea what renting the rosemont convention center costs?? think of one hall for one night for a wedding reception.. then think of at least 5 huge lecture halls and many smaller ones for an entire 3 days, not to mention all the other huge costs.

it's like someone telling your msa they weren't going to pay the $5 buck fee to get into a lecture. .and ur using the money to pay for the room/mic/refreshments served. it's not really likely that they really do not have $5.

a perfect example this weekend we had an event here that cost about $1200 total.. hotel rooms, speakers honorarium (we actually cut it in half cuz we had no $), no transport fees too, food, mic etc and we were going to charge for this event but for the generosity of an msa in the community and a mosque org.

then this uncle guy comes up to the table when we're serving pizza and says, "is this all you're serving"  and i just looked at him and said "what?" he said "is this all you're serving, pizza?" (looking at the pizza in contempt) i was ready to [deleted by moderator ] then as he was walking away i said "wait!! you know that this food is donated, we only have it because some generous ppl in our community paid for it, we could have charged for this event but we didn't!" and he said "oh" and walked away...

anyways i understand your comment about everything being "free" -- if we only lived in the time of the sahaba etc.. but come on.. i know people who spend 10 times as much going to disney world or buying a mcdonalds lunch on the weekend instead of going to an islamic conference and when it comes to buying an islamic tape.. oh no it's too expensive.. it should be free..this probably goes with the whole "dawud wharnsby" we should pay for islamic products discussion thread...
I agree with bhaloo wholeheartedly...sometimes its forgotten what it takes financially to stage these events and what it takes out of these imams who are making major sacrifices in both time and expense coming...

In fact I personally would pay more than $10 and become a vegetarian for a week to hear either of those two talk...so its reasonable...

one can have meat anytime (unless maybe you're in the UK :) )...but how many times will one get to hear them?...

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

The last time I heard Hamza Yusuf talk in London, he actually said himself that he didn't agree with the admission fee but realised costs had to be covered.

I think we all agree with the principle that it should be free Br Nazir but practicalities dictate otherwise.

Hey we have meat! We just have to pay through the nose for it!

Brother Khalid are you thinking what I'm thinking? ???  If you are, you just read my mind.  ;)

You have a meat problem.  We have an energy problem.  Business opportunities galore. :)

Assalam ualykum,

If people don't want to pay enterance fees whether they are $10 or $20, then they might perhaps want to pay all the expenses for the speakers, the food, the facilities as part of their sadaqah???

wassalam

Bismillah Rahman Rahim , wa salatuhu wa salam ala'a Rasul Karim,
As salam alaykum ,

The benefit  of a conference.
Thawab for encouraging the ummah,
Attending a far off lecture for His sake
Blessing of the malaika in the gathering
Blessing   on the duas done by the attendants
Motivation  by seeing the ummah from the 4 corners of the earth gathering for  1 purpose
Learning experience  in Ilm and Hilm,
Motivation to change, improve, grow,  spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, socially
Motivation to participate and strengthen ones’ iman, ikhlas, yaquin, ihsan, and amal
Motivation to break the mold of habits and raise up to the “ideal” , with role model
Interaction with others fellow Muslims from other parts of the world, communities,  culture, etc..
An immense impact on our inner being, which may change us for good, or increase us in one of those low period of iman.  Also it’s a motivation for people from others parts of the country to try to emulate those type of lectures, a learning experience for others to learn how to organize, setup, prioritize, develop local organizations  , lectures, activities, despite our shortcomings due to our differences .  Dear brother,  a lecture is more then what the lecturers talks about, it’s a whole world of things happening .  And since you are a gastronome , the next time you attend a lecture , don’t look at it like a simple plate of rice , but more so like a buffet of delicacies of in whish the lecture is the icing on the cake.

Oh oh I forgot books , tapes fair…. Not only we gain knowledge, but it’s knowledge which will benefit others, either directly because we’ll tell others about such and such an aspect, or we’ll act on that knowledge and it will impact on others,  in one way or another. Additionally it’s  a medium for us to encourage our Muslims scholars to write, translate, abridge, publish, distribute, our books with our heritage.  It’s a medium to inform us of the schools, activities, businesses of our communities to channel our efforts into developing our communities.

It’s a blessing to hear that there is a lecture somewhere, it’s a blessing to be even interested , it’s even a greater blessing to go for it, it’s a blessing to encourage your communities,  either by your presence,  $$$, or your input in it. How many muslims do we know who don’t attend the mosque and may Allah (swt) forgive them and guide them, how many know about lectures but their hearts are not responsive,  for some of us, we’ll even  invite a brother to a restaurant as a treat, take him to a lecture pay for it, give him a ride home, but still he’ll refuse to come. So my dear brother it’s a blessing, in all it’s aspect.  “ Who ever Allah (swt) want good for him, he’ll give him the knowledge of the din” , and lectures are good knowledge and count you blessed that you are even aware of them, and have the means of attending,  I know a person who was deaf , yet refused to miss a lecture, when asked why ? the person responded that he feels a rejuvenation of his iman when he attends those lectures. As for the 10 $, I do understand that in some cases it might be hard on u,  but I’m pretty sure if u were to go to one lecture and see the brothers at the entrance and tell them “ by Allah this is all I have , and I can’t AFFORD to miss it” , and if u niya is clean , you’ll walk in there and benefit from it, remember my dear one that according to the reports we have been blessed to hear from our beloved shuyukh (Ra) ,  an’ Nabi (saw) is reported to have said “ during the preparations of Tabuk, I don’t know in the sight of Allah (awj) which one is  heavier the tray of gold of A bin Auf (ra) or the tray of dates of  Abu dhar “.
How many times have we wasted a 10$ bill,  either in a book, movie, entertainment, clothes , object, how many times have we bought something because at that particular moment we felt that it was “necessary “ yet a couple of days, weeks, later it will end up either in a box, closet, or garage.  If you knew what was involved to get these wonderful dedicated masheykh, to come and deliver a talk brother , you’ll look at it from another angle.  It’s a golden opportunity for you, and whose fruits you’ll rip tomorrow, and maybe others will benefit from them. Brother keep on making dua to Allah (swt) so that He (swt) expand your breast and make you see the bigger picture, you have time, it'll grow insh'Allah.

nb : please your dua can make a difference for the widows and orphans, and your 10 $ can feed a family for half a month. Be generous oh people of Mercy.
