Religion question is *IN* the 2001 Census

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

This was news to me!!

UK Brothers and Sisters, please pass on the news.

[hr]

Census Day - Sunday 29 April 2001

Tick the box marked 'Muslim'

· For the first time in British history, there will be a question in the Census: What is your religion?

· If you are a Muslim and resident in the UK, tick the box marked 'Muslim'.

Why all UK Muslim residents should complete the Census 2001?

1. We will get accurate statistics on the Muslim community in Britain, for the first time.

2. Accurate statistics will help us seek the type of schools we need, housing, medical and social facilities, employment opportunities, and a fair share of our country's resources.

3. Muslim Identity - as opposed to racial or ethnic identity - will get clear public recognition

For yourself, your family and the future of the Muslim community in Britain - please answer the religion question in the Census on Census Day.

You will not get another opportunity like this for another ten years.

(The Census in Britain is done every ten years. The Muslim Council of Britain and its affiliates have been campaigning for many years for this religion question and all UK Muslim residents are urged to complete Census 2001 for real and lasting benefits.)

There are legal safeguards to ensure the confidentiality of census data and prevent misuse.

BrKhalid i think you're absolutely right.  i'd also like to urge other fellow Uk muslims to complete the consensus - let one of the  major Western governments see just how many people have come to Islam  by the will of Allah SWT  :-)

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Just filled my Census form in....really quite simple so make sure you all tick that Muslim box ;-)

Interesting though here's what the religious question looks like:

What is your religion?

- This question is voluntary

- Tick one box only

None

Christian

Buddhist

Hindu

Jewish

Muslim

Sikh

Any other religion

Now can someone tell me why "None" is the first option???

assalam alaikum,

do you not think it may be wise to fill in nothing, and so understate our numbers?

assalam alaikum,

its just that the western governments will react to muslims domestically with a proportioned response. In Britain Tony Blair is quite happy to anounce what day eid is going to be and basically try to secularise muslims as much as possible.
Actually this is a very complex issue, and there are just too many factors. I'll try and summarise my argument: The west will give us freedom so that they can continue to fleece our bros overseas. If they treat us bad, then trade relations will suffer. So they let us do what we want, up to a point. So we can do dawa, which is a more powerful weapon than they know. But we should keep it quiet. Our numbers are always growing. Exponentially in certain minority communities. If they think that the rate is going beyond what they predicted, we will all feel it.

salam wa rahmat'Allah

I think it is important that you make sure you check "Muslim". I don't know how it works in the UK, but here in the US those numbers are extremely important and are used as a basis for alot of important decisions by the gov't themselves and others.

Assalaamu alaikum,

What is the current estimate of the Muslim population in UK?

I agree with Jannah. All Muslims should identify their religion. A census provides tons of information that can be used by Muslims to better serve their needs. Also, carrying out a census is expensive so full advantage should be taken of a free oppurtunity like this. Information like regional distribution, densities, etc all are invaluable in planning Muslims services by Muslims. I think the advantages far outweigh the apparent disadvantages listed by Ali.

Wasalaam.

assalam alaikum,

I respectfully disagree. We can use the info, maybe, but so can they, and they will. Otherwise it wouldn't be on the form.

eh sorry, but I think it's better to be seen and known!! It's not like the Muslims are on some secret mission or anything. What exactly can *they* do with the information? Hold you all hostage or something?
