| Over 16,000 children, elderly died in Iraq in January A total of 16,025 Iraqi children and elderly people died of various diseases in January due to malnutrition and medicine shortages caused by the decade-old U.N. sanctions, Iraqi Health Ministry said in a report released last week. The report showed that 7,813 children aged below five died of diarrhea, pneumonia, respiratory infections and malnutrition while 8,212 elderly people died of hypertension, diabetes and malignant neoplasms. This brought the total number of sanctions' victims to 1,460,900 since 1990 when the United Nations imposed the embargo against Iraq. Iraq has repeatedly demanded the U.N. lift the stringent sanctions while accusing the U.S.-Britain of impeding the implementation of the U.N. oil-for-food program by holding vital contracts Iraq signed with foreign countries to buy food, medicine and other basic necessities for its people. The oil-for-food deal, launched in late 1996 and now in its ninth phase, allows Iraq to sell some oil in return for U.N.-monitored imports of humanitarian goods to offset the impact of the sanctions.
