Assalaamu alaikum,

Does anyone know of some good opening du'a for beginning an Islamic lesson?  I'm looking for a short opening, b/c the lesson will be 3-4 min only, like a khatira.

Ma'ssalaama.

Aslamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

This is what I use...

Bismillahi-rahmaanir-raheem Alhamdulillahi-rabbil-aalameen, wa salatu wa salamu ala sayidina Muhammad, Ashadu-Allah illaha illallah wa ashadu-anna Muhammadar-rasoolullah.

But there are many more so can say.

wa salam

Bismillah hir Rahman hir Raheem
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate

Alhamdulillahi Rabil Alaameen
Praise and thanks be to the Lord of the Worlds

Wassalatu Wassalaamu 'ala Rasulullah
And prayers and peace upon the Messenger

Nabeeyana wa Habeebana wa Oswatona,
Our prophet and our beloved and our example,

Muhammad ibn Abdullah sallallahu alayhi wassalam.
Muhammad son of Abdullah, peace be upon him.

Amma Ba'ad,
And after that,

Assalaam alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuhu,
Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings,

As salaamu alaykum, brother you can say the following {if you have time}, for This is the manner in which the messenger {salallahu alayhi wa salaam} used to open most of his Friday khutbah and khutob (speeches). He {salallahu alayhi wa salaam} used to teach his companions this opening dua {as narrated by Ibn Masood}. It is also the sunnah to say this khutbah whenever one wants to propose (to a sister). The hadeeth can be found in the sunan of Abu Dawud-chatper of marriage proposal, and An-nas'i, At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Musnad of Imam Ahmad and the Mustrak of Al-Hakim and it is saheeh.

‏اتقوا الله الذي ‏ ‏تساءلون ‏ ‏به والأرحام إن الله كان عليكم رقيبا ‏  {Al-Imran:102}

‏يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقوا الله حق تقاته ولا تموتن إلا وأنتم مسلمون ‏ {An-Nisa':1}

‏يا أيها الذين آمنوا اتقوا الله وقولوا قولا سديدا يصلح لكم أعمالكم ويغفر لكم ذنوبكم ومن يطع الله ورسوله فقد فاز فوزا عظيما ‏ {Al-Ahzaab:70 & 71}

   Indeed all the praises is due to Allah, we praise him and we seek his assisitance and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and our bad deeds, whoever Allah guides there is none that can misguide him and whoever is leads astray there is none that can guide him, and I bear witness there is no God other than Allah, He has no partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his servant and messenger.

"O you who believe, fear Allah as he deserves to be feared and do not die except that you are muslims" Al-Imran:102

"O mankind fear your lord, who created you from a single soul, and created from him his wife, and from them both he created many men and women, and fear Allah through whom you demand your mutual rights, indeed Allah is an all-watcher over you" An-nisa:1

"O you who believe fear Allah and say that which is correct. He will rectify your deeds, and forgive you of your sin, and whoever obeys Allah and His messenger has indeed achieved a great achievement" Al-Ahzab:70-71,  and as to what follows.............

Hmm.  The khaitrah is ONLY 2-3 minutes?  I'd say this then:

Bismillaahi walHamdulillaahi waSSalaatu wassalaamu 3alaa rasulillaah

Meaning: In the Name of Allah; All Praise is due to Allah, and Peace and Blessings be upon Allah's Messenger.

An alternative:

Bismillaahi waHdah.  WaSSalaatu wassalaamu 3alaa man laa nabiyya ba3dah.

Meaning: In the Name of Allah, the One.  Peace and Blessings be upon the one after whom there is no Prophet.

P.S.  Transliteration scheme used above:

3 - ayn
S - saad
s - seen
H - Haa (as in alHamdu)
h - haa (as in Allah)
