Were all the sahabas hafiz? Was Prophet Muhammad (saw) hafiz?
I was thinking that since Quran was complied much after Prophet Muhammad saw's death (during Hazrat Osman's (ra) time) all the sahabas  were hafiz ?
I was talking to one of the sisters and the topic of memorizing Quran came up. And the sister was of the opnion that only children or  youth can hifz Quran not adult i.e. it is very difficuilt or rather next to impossible for a person in late 20's or 30 onward to hifz.  But Quran was revealed when Prophet saw was 40 years of age  and he memorized it( ?), was he an exception? or all the sahabas were hafiz? or is this is just a myth that only children can hifz easily?
Also does any one know of any full time school of memorizing Quran in North east area(PA, NJ) for children?
Thanks
Wasalam
tq

My understanding goes like this-Whenever Quran was revealed, all the companions memorized it right away.  However, some companions entered Islam late in the Prophethood or after a good portion of the Quran was revealed.  They too though, memorized the Quran-everyone did-men and women (I don't know about children).  The only one companion who was not a hafiz was Khalid Ibn Walid.  As a matter of fact, he had memorized only a very small portion of the Quran. The Prophet, sallahoo alayhee wa salam, did not mind that because he (Khalid Ibn Walid) was so busy in the way of jihad.  Wallahoo Alam.

as-Salaamu 'Alaykum,
Regarding schools in the PA/NJ area.  In Philadelphia there are a few schools, but the main one that comes to mind is the Quba Institute directed by Imam Anwar Muhaimen.  There is a school in New Jersey, but I'm not from there so I'm not sure of the name or its location.  I want to say al-Ghazali school of New Jersey but again, I'm not completely sure.

Take care,

According to what I have read in Al-Itqaan Fee Uloom Al-Quraan by Jalaal-ad-Din as-Suyooti (rahimahullah), not all the sahaabah were huffaz.  Some of the very famous sahaabah were not huffaz!  However, many of them were, and MOST of them had the majority of the Qur'an memorized.

The Prophet (pbuh) had the Qur'an memorized, of course.  Remember that Jibreel visited him twice during Ramadan of the year in which he died to review the entire Qur'an with him.

It is certainly a myth that only children can memorize the Qur'an!  Our imam memorized the Qur'an while he as a student in college.  There are other examples also where people have memorized the entire Qur'an in adulthood.

Wassalamu alaikum.

salaam,

I heard that the Prophet saws was the very first hafiz.  I believe many
of the sahaba were too, they would memorize the Qur'an before trying to
understand the meaning.

Yes, it's easier for an 8 year old rather than a 20 or 40 year to
memorize the Qur'an but I don't, actually I know there is no age limit.
Anyone and everyone regardless of their age can make the intention to
become a hafiz.  I know many brothers over the age of 20 who are now doing
their hifz.

Allahu A3lam
