20 die in stampede in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, April 1 (AFP) - At least 20 people died and 100 were hospitalised in a stampede at the shrine of an Islamic saint in central Pakistan late Saturday, police said.

Police said the dead were among thousands of men crammed into a narrow street leading to the main door at the shrine of Baba Farib Shakar Gunj in Paktattan, 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of Lahore.

Deputy Inspector of Police Shaukat Javed said the crowd rushed forward as the Behasti Door (Paradise Door) was about to be opened as part of an annual ritual at the shrine.

He said many of the victims, all males including a 12-year-old boy, died of suffocation as they were crushed against a wall.

The stampede occurred when a mass of people rushed forward to pass through the 'Behashti door,' a door that opens only one day a year.

Locals believe that anyone who passes through it will enter Paradise when they die.

Such a belief as most of us will recognise is completely unislamic, and shows the importance of giving da'wah at the grassroots level and not adopting a top-down methodology for establishing Islam.

Pakistan Shirk deaths

Asslaamu-Alaikum

I read last night that 27 people were killed in pakistan as they tried to get through a gateway, which some ignorant muslims feel will  take them to paradise when they day, and that all thier sins will be forgiven. This a done at a huge shrine of some dead cleric.

This tradition is a DISGRACE to Islaam, and it is MAJOR SHIRK. They went thier to pray to a dead man to help them, them tried to get through a door, belieling it would take them to heaven. But they were killed in the process. This was a punishment from Allah.

I was sickened when i saw the pictures of all these foolish people charging to commit a major shirk. They got their punishment from Allah.

Kashif, Allah put the truth on your tongue.

May Allah guide all the muslims to leave their present state of Jaahiliyah, somewhich contains shirk and bid'ah

Assalaamu alaikum,

These practices are *very* common in Pakistan. You would think that only the uneducated get caught in such unIslamic practices. No, there are many educated people - those who have gone through college including doctors, engineers, etc and who live in big cities - who believe in such things. These people have this concept of Islam where they think they can do whatever they like in life and then one day visit some peer so that he can invoke something to purify them! Isn't this very similar to what the Hindus do? The Kumbh Mela springs to mind. Dawah is defintely needed. However, there are also people who preach these unIslamic practices. One of the reasons why they are succesful is that they make Islam easy for them - go to such-and-such and your prayers would be answered. While correct dawah means telling them to pray, avoid corruption, avoid backbiting, strive against your nafs, etc. This is hard for them! They have divorced Islam from eveyday life and made some human responsible for their salvation.

Just go's to show that despite gaining their PHD's and MSC's they still remain as ignorant and heedless as the illiterate amongst them. This is a proof against all those people who believe that the way forward for countries such as Pakistan is in the aquiring of worldly knowledge as oppose to Islamic knowledge.

just ignore this bit, i could'nt help myself.

Reminds me of confession and Catholic priests

Interesting stuff Br Asim. I never realised how much ignorance there was in Pakistan! And as Br Anwar said, worldly education seems to be no cure.

But where do these customs come from? Have they just been passed down from generation to generation? And why can't the real message of Islam be conveyed to these people? Is it simply that although they live in an Islamic country, they just don't want to follow Islam?

Btw Br Anwar I actually thought that was kinda funny but you didn't hear me say that okay? ;-)

jehad where did you come up with this??? is this the example of the prophet [saw] ? xtian and jewish churches, monastaries and temples are protected under Islamic law even in war situations. even after the prophet [saw] went through torture and persecution from the polytheists of makkah did you see him destroy makkah or the ppl when he re-entered?

agreed that those weird things they've made objects of worship like that gate should be removed, but dawah is the only answer to change people's hearts and minds. otherwise they'll just find another gate.

Good question Tarar. It reminds me of a story that a friend of mine told me a few years ago. He went back to his home country and one day found a huge line of people outside a building. His curiosity led him to join the line andhe found out that it was the shrine of some saintly person. When he got inside he was told to pay some money so that he could shake the hand of the saint (although he is supposed to be dead).

The brother paid the money and entered a chamber where thera was a wall with a hole in it. He put his hand thru it and it was grasped and shaken by the greasy, sweaty hand of someone sitting on the other side!

Without proper education, people can be real suckers!
