This was written by a sister at umich ann arbor, it won 3rd place at her eid dinner. i think it has an excellent message behind it. sometimes we tend to  judge other sisters solely on the basis of whether or not they wear the
hijab and treat them differently, when we should instead be more open and encouraging.

====================================================

           It's not your decision
     I remember the time when it didn't matter;
We all grew up the same, unashamed of our naked heads.
     Then something changed,
And some of us became aware.
And some of us were forced.
And some of us didn't change at all.
Those that got to choose, they were the lucky ones.
Hijab is the dignity of women.
     Yet. The others.
We call them drop-tops. Fake scarves.
They give us a bad name, we say.
     And we dismiss them.
They never understood what or why.
     They hated the obligation.
     We hated them.
     Nothing is resolved.
     Our judgment breeds miscommunication,
     And everything hurts.
The Ummah suffers from our selfishness.
She won't appreciate anything I have to say anyways.
     Not offering our thoughts
     We continue to lose them.
And to those that never changed
     Our mothers sisters
     Cousins aunts
     And our friends.
     They are trying.
Disapproving looks and angry commands don't seem to work.
Encouragement is a benign action, sincerity a revolutionary idea.
     Categorizing into groups
We perpetuate the cycle of our disarray.
We are sad fragments of what should be
     Through voluntary amputation.
     (God forbid, guilt by association.)
     You see, my friends,
     This piece of cloth,
It is symbolic of many things.
Yet if this is all we see,
Then the light of the deen
     That glows in our hearts
     Has been extinguished.
And Shaitan has closed our eyes,
     On Islam, on Allah
     And on each other.
Every last one of us is guilty
Yet few of us are unashamed.
     Things changed before.
     Can they change again?
