A boarding school principal in Ajax has been charged with sexually
assaulting four former and present students.

The four male students were attending the Institute of Islamic Learning, a
boarding school on Audley Rd. in Ajax, Sergeant Jim Grimley of Durham Region
police said.

The victims, who range in age from 10 to 21, allege the incidents happened
at the boarding school and in the principal's residence between 1992 and
December, 2000.

``This man was the principal since the school opened in 1992,'' Grimley
said.  Abdul Majid Kahn, 40, of Wicks Dr. in Ajax, is charged with four
counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual exploitation and sexual
interference.

He is to appear in court in Oshawa today. Anyone with information is asked
to call the Durham police sexual assault unit at 905-579-1520 ext. 5334.

Assalam ualykum,

Oh man, this is bad. :( poor kids.

:(  It makes me even more angry when Muslims do things like that. He's the first such case I have heard of. Well, first time for everything right?

[sigh] what is the world coming to?!? I'm doing a project on how commercials affect people and one of the appeals that they use is the sex appeal to sell their products. I was watching a case study about some people.... well straight to the point: American's are becoming more accepting of deviant sexual practices. Like beatiality and.. ok. gross. I don't even want to say this.

For once Mike Wallace said something smart. That people should diffrentiate real life from the media industry, to not cofuse it with reality.

:(  Is society just going to get worse and worse? What a nasty, bruthis world!

wassalam

New Yorkers can check out the website for Megan's Law. http://www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us
They post all the sex offenders in the state. There is also a link for other states.

Just last week we found out a sexual predator lives in the house next to our school. In our small city there are 4 level three ( the worst)- and of course they are living near the schools.

The scary thing is there are 90, but the law will only let us know about the high risk ones.

[slm],

can anybody verify this? I am usually skeptical about such stories if they come out of western media and especially since its about another muslim and a teacher of an Islamic school at that.

As muslims we must really be careful about the our comments on news such as these, since its such a serious matter (Anwar Ibrahim's case comes to mind in malaysia!). The punishement for slandering someone falsely is very harsh in the shariah.

In long, loose tunics and colourful headgear, several young male students
lingered on the steps of Ajax's Islamic Learning Institute yesterday in
shock over the stunning allegations of sexual abuse by their principal, a
religious leader.

The charges have put this secluded private school -- considered a gem
among Sunni Muslims in Canada who want sons to become a mufti, or priest
-- in an uncomfortable and unaccustomed spotlight.

A bail hearing today in Oshawa it set to determine whether 40-year-old
Abdul Majid Khan, a mufti, father of four children under 10 and the
institute's founder, will be released from police custody.

On Wednesday, he was arrested on eight charges of sexual assault,
exploitation and interference involving four former and current male
students for allegations dating back as far as 1992, when the school
opened.

According to Mr. Khan's lawyer, Alexander Sosna, the Crown attorney for
the case will oppose Mr. Khan's release on the grounds he is at risk of
re-offending or fleeing.

But members of the Muslim community have come forward to speak on Mr.
Khan's behalf and offer whatever bail is warranted. Mr. Sosna said the
accused has no criminal record and is considered a visionary who built the
school through hard work and cultivating the community.

Some of his current 130 students -- who come from Ottawa, Montreal, the
Toronto area and the U.S. -- stood behind him.

"It's all lies," said one student.

"We are all in shock," said another, before politely shooing reporters off
the steps of the $2-million-plus building where the private boarding
school is housed on a secluded 15-acre lot abutted by farmland and riding
stables.

Syed Uddin's son attended the school between age 7 and 10 for its unique
three-year program in memorizing the Koran, the sacred book of Islam,
according to special rules of recitation.

"I've never heard or seen anything wrong or against him," said the Toronto
man, who also has been an adviser to Mr. Khan on school business. "He is
really honest and hard working and sincere in his efforts for his
students."

Mr. Khan raised money to purchase the school's $350,000 plot of land in
1992 by "going door-to-door" among Muslim families, Mr. Uddin said.

The school originally operated out of a two-family house on the land and
classes were held in a converted garage.

Mr. Khan's ability to raise money was also responsible for the
construction of the impressive two-year-old building now gracing the land
-- he is listed as the owner of it, in trust.

The school is popular. It charges full-time, live-in male students in
grades 2 through 12 between $4,000 and $5,000 a year in tuition and board
and has to turn students away, Mr. Uddin said.

But it also operates in the red, he said, and Mr. Khan has had to borrow
money from the Muslim community to keep it running.

Sergeant Stan Piersma, of the Durham Regional Police's sexual assault
squad, said yesterday that no one has come forward with new allegations
and that the school is co-operating with the investigation.
