tips on stopping bad habits...

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

For those of us lacking in will-power and self discipline, what are some things we can do to stop bad habits?

here are some i've tried...

-wear a rubber band on your wrist... when you catch yourself doing/thinking/saying something you shouldn't *snap*

-have one of your trusted friends collect 25 cents from you everytime you say something you shouldn't... I think I owe dhikr a thousand dollars by now ;) this works especially well when you're broke :)

anyone have any good ones?

omg.. are you serious? you actually tried that? :D well i never though of that :)

candy can help too.. but if your will power is too weak to even save candy for rewarding yourself, then it may not help you ;-D

Assalam ualykum,

I must admit that I used something like that a couple of years back and I got my friend to pinch me every time I did it. Eventually I gave up. :)

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuh,

yeah man, it works.  You just have to have the guts to do it.  After a while, everytime you do that stupid thing you're not supposed to, you automatically brace yourself for the pain.  It's cool, kinda pavlovian I guess, but it works... your mind goes bad thing = pain.

No?  What, it was in an episode or something?  Did it work? :)

Saleema, did you gave up the bad habit or give up trying to stop the bad habit? :P

wasalaam.

I have found that being presistent in dua works, especially when I
started to do it in the preferable times. I believe it helps quit smoking
even.
tried to ...(don't laugh) visualize?!
And definately having a good friend.

Assalamu alaikum,

Br. Moe, my advice is to keep trying.  Even the prayers that you missed praying on time, you should make them all up when you remember/before the end of the day.  It is like your homework.  You have to finish it and it is a very serious matter.

Try very hard brother. The initial stages seem harder than what they really are, so just hang in there.  It would be really helpful to be around good muslim friends your age who would remind you (and you them), better yet, pray in jama3a with them.

It should also help to think of prayers as your sanctuary and your chance, your golden chance, to stand in infront of Allah and thank Him for everything He blessed you with.  Make sincere dua when you pray, especially during sujood, that you continue worshiping Allah in a manner acceptable to Him.  Say repeatedly "Allahuma a3innee 3alaa thikrika wa shukrika wa husni 3ibaadatika". [comeone please translate, I am not in the best translating modes today!]

And keep coming to Madinat Al-Muslimeen, it is a great place to hang in around, especially that it is populated by awesome, hilarious, genuinely caring brothers and sisters :-).

Chins up Moe!

Yeah! Its the one where Homer decides to build a kennel for Santa's Little Helper; everytime he swears he puts money into a swear jar! Thats one hilarious episode!

btw. does anyone know where i can see a pic of the guy who does Homer's voice? In 10 yrs i haven't seen one pic of him at all!

O Allah aid me in remembering You, thanking You & worshipping You properly.

[slm],

Br. Moe, also try to keep company of at least one friend who makes salat, so both of you can remind each other.

yeh se7en owe up :) heheif i let u off the hook it wont be good for u , u kno?

another thing u cud try doing, write the word ghibah on ur hand and for everytime u do it in a day make a check mark on ur hand, and by the end of the day ,record it in a lil book or sumthin and then it makes u fel disgusting so that u stop before u start the next time, it works.
the only sucky part abt it is everytime u make wodhu or wash ur hands u have to remember how many were there, and another tip is i clipped a pen on to my shirt so then id always have a pen ready to write it down, meaning no excuses.

asalaam alaikum friends -

this may seem like cruel and unusual punishment, but it didnt seem like it at the time...

when we were younger, my brother used to call me by name, which my mom thought was disrespectful, so she told me i could slap him if he didnt call me "api." (no, my mom isnt sadist hehe)...by slap, i was allowed to like place my hand on his cheek, like tap it and stuff (believe me, i got in a LOT of trouble if i put force into it). but just the sheer fear of not knowing whether i would really slap him or not got my brother to change his ways, and im now introduced as "api."
