Milosevic gets support from India's Panther party: report
BELGRADE, April 6 (AFP) - Jailed former president Slobodan Milosevic received "strong" support Friday from India's Panther party, and a "large number of Indian citizens," the neo-communist Yugoslav Left (JUL) party of his wife Mira Markovic said.

"Milosevic's arrest has a political background and represents pandering to the United States and the new world order," the statement from the JUL quoted Bim Singh, the leader of the small leftist Panther party, as saying.

Bim "strongly condemned the arrest of the Serbian hero" Milosevic, arrested on Sunday on charges of abuse of power and financial misdealings.

He described the whole procedure prior to and after the arrest as "illegal, unconstitutional, which violates Yugoslav laws and human rights," the party said.

The Indian activist promised he would personally bring a team of prominent lawyers from India to "defend Milosevic in Belgrade or any other place," the JUL said in a statement.

Bim Singh was a frequent visitor to Belgrade during Milosevic's rule, establishing close links with his Socialist party as well as with the JUL.

Media reports said he had translated a number of books written by Mira Markovic for India's market.

Markovic herself has visited India several times.
