ROOSEVELT, New York (AP) -- Classes were canceled for two days while officials sought to regain control of a school plagued by unruly students, false fire alarms and bomb threats.

Superintendent Horace Williams ordered classes canceled Thursday and Friday at Roosevelt Junior and Senior High School, which serves 1,100 students.

The Roosevelt school district, located in a low-income, high-crime area of Long Island's Nassau County, has frustrated educators for years as they have tried to address school violence, low test scores, decaying buildings, and austerity budgets.

State education officials placed the district under state supervision four years ago.

School board president Mark Davis said the majority of the board supported Williams, who became superintendent of the 3,000-student district last September.

"It's a renaissance at Roosevelt," Davis said. "We are taking our school back."

Williams and his staff have identified 30 to 40 students who have been considered the troublemakers. School officials will meet with the students and their parents over the next few days and requiring them to sign contracts for improved conduct.

Workshops to train teachers to better manage their classrooms will be conducted over the next week, which is the school's spring break.

Christopher Carpenter, a spokesman for the state education department, said that the department supports Williams' judgment, saying he had the authority to make it.

"His feeling was that he needed to do this to stabilize the school," said Carpenter. "We told him we are watching the required days."

Students in New York are required to attend classes for 180 days for the school to qualify for state aid. Roosevelt may have to extend the school year to meet the requirement.
