Occupied Jerusalem: 9 April (IAP News) - Today marks the annual anniversary of the Massacre of Deir Yasin, carried out on the 9th of April, 1948, by two criminal Zionist para-military organizations, the Irgun Zvai Leumi (IZL) and Stern Gang (LEHI).  On that fateful day, at dawn, over 120 Zionist terrorists, armed to the teeth with machineguns, Sten guns, and bayonets  entered the small Palestinian village in what is now West Jerusalem, committing one of the most horrible massacres of defenseless and innocent men, women and children. According to the "History of the Haganah," them Zionists "carried out anmassacre without discriminating among men, women and children and old people."

Survivors made horrifying testimonies, including piercing the bellies of pregnant women with bayonets.

The attackers finished their work by loading some of the "prisoners" who had fallen into their hands onto cars and parading them in the streets of Jerusalem in a "victory convoy" amidst the cheers of the Jewish masses.

After the parade, these "prisoners"  were returned to the village, taken to a nearby quarry  and summarily executed. The victims numbered 245, half of whom were women and children.

Deir Yasin soon became a byword for the atrocities committed during 1948 and the subject of the impact of the massacre on the subsequent Palestinian exodus.

Former Zionist Prime Minister, Menahem Begin, who took part in the atrocity, described Deir Yasin as a "miracle that descended on the Jewish people."

"'The horror the massacre generated was the driving force behind the Arab exodus," he later wrote in his book, the Revolt.

In 1949, hundreds of Jewish immigrants were settled at Deir Yasin as the village was re-named Givat Shaul. Many of Deir Yasin's houses on the hill are still standing and have been incorporated into an Israeli hospital for the mentally-ill.

The massacre of Deir Yasin was only one of many massacres committed by the Zionists in 1948. According to historical records, Deir Yasin's massacre was not the biggest that the Zionists committed against Palestinian civilians.

Others massacres perpetrated in 1948, such as those of Tantura, Dawayma, Qibya, Ramle, to mention just a few, were even more horrendous than that of Deir Yasin although they didn't acquire the prominence of Deir Yasin.

The Zionists committed numerous other massacres of innocent Palestinians and other Arabs after Deir Yasin. Among the most notorious massacres are Kufer-Qassim (1956), Samou, near al Khalil (1966), the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre (1994), and the Qana massacre in Southern Lebanon (1996).
