ISLAMIC JEOPARDY Q #3

[slm]I was hesitant in posting a question for two reasons:
1) some *cough* have tried to turn this friendly trivia game into some sort of competition that will somehow demonstrate a certain group's merit over another. Are we not one ummah? How sad...:(

2) I couldn't think of a question that I really liked.

That being said, here is Question #3 along with three others just for fun. Message me the answers.

Important!! You must answer in the form of a question!

Warm-Up Question #1

Following his visit to Cairo, the price of gold declined so much that twelve years later, the market had still not fully recovered.

Warm-Up Question #2

According to the Prophet[saw], on the scale of Allah, these would be greater than the mountain of Uhud.

Warm-Up Question #3

Ibn Batutah wrote the following about this group of people:

"Yet another is their zeal for learning the Qur'an by heart. They put their children in chains if they show any backwardness in memorizing it, and they are not set free until they have it by heart. I visited the qadi in his house on the day of the festival. His children were chained up, so I said to him, "Will you not let them loose?" He replied, "I shall not do so until they learn the Qur'an by heart."

Ok, cue daff playing Jeopardy theme...

Jeopardy Question #3

After having fled his Mesopatamian homeland from the Mongols as a boy, he would later oppose them as an emissary, and, on one occasion, rejected their offer to release only the prisoners of war who were Muslims.

Have fun, message answers to me inshallah...[slm]

The winner is Jannah!

Warm-Up Answer #1

Who is Mansa Musa?

At the height of its power, the empire of Mali had enormous gold resources, with Mansa Musa at the helm. On his pilgrimage to Mecca/Mekka/Makkah, Mansa Musa and his entourage inflated the economies of every town they passed through. When they visited Cairo, he gave away so much gold that the market was flooded, the price of gold precipitously dropped, and the market did not recover for more than a decade.

Warm-Up Question #2

What are Abdullah ibn Mas'ud's legs?

It is reported that Abdullah ibn Mas'ud had thin, weak legs. Once, when climbing a tree, upon seeing his leg uncovered, some people laughed, whereupon the Prophet[saw] said, "Are you laughing at the frailty of his legs? By Him in Whose hand is my soul, in the scale of Allah they are weightier than Mount Uhud." (Reported by al-Tiyalisi and Ahmad.)

Though this is the answer I was looking for, Sr. Mona very cleverly gave another answer which I think is correct in its own right:

What is "awqiyah"? (which is 1/1200th of the reward from Allah for reading 200 verses of Quran at times outside those of prayer)

Ishaq lbn Ammar has narrated from Abi Abdullah who said: " One who reads one hundred verses of the holy Quran in his prayer during the night, Allah will write for him the reward for worshipping for the whole night. One who reads two hundred verses of the holy Quran in a condition other than the state of prayer, Allah will write for him on the protected tablet one (Qintar of good deeds) and a Qintar is equal to one thousand two hundred Awqiyah and one Awqiyah is bigger than the mountain of Uhud."

Warm-Up Question #3

Who are the people of Mali circa 1300?

Jeopardy Question #3

Who is Ibn Taymiyyah?

Ibn Taymiyyah was born in Harran, which lies on the Balikh river, a tributary of the Euphrates, in Mesopatamia. When the Mongol invasion threatened northern Mesopotamia, his family fled to Damascus, where he acquired much of his learning. Many years later, he opposed the Mongols in many respects, including as an emissary. Unlike the other 'ulama at the time, he showed great courage in speaking the truth and openly criticizing the Mongol invaders directly to their faces. Yet his honesty, resolve and dignity earned him the respect of the Mongol leadership. When they offered to release only the Muslim prisoners of war, he refused and insisted that they release the non-Muslims as well since they were citizens and under the Muslims' protection. His persistence ultimately led to the release of the non-Muslim prisoners.

And so the score is:

Albanyia: 3
Rest of the World: 0

;)

Now that's an incentive.  The las quiz question was bugging me so much especially that I could not find the answer from my net serarches. I was actually 'tempted' to head off to the library  when I was working at the lab on the weekend. I couldn't justify it though with all the work I had to do.

wassalam

[slm]I like the idea as well...Good to have an incentive...I got very very few responses to Question #3...

So is this the end of Islamic Jeopardy? That was short-lived...At least Albanyia proved its mettle. :) [slm]

Maybe we could have teams?  So things are balanced out and fair.  And then each person from the team is required to answer.  People that don't know could pass it off to a team member that hasn't answered? ???

As long as I'm on some team with some Albanian on it, I think my team will do well (sorry Arsalan, but the Texans have been playing poorly).

So who's down with Team Bhaloo?  Team Moo?  ;)
