Second Sharjah International women's Conference.

Despite great advancements of the modern era in various fields, the world is dominated by a distorted concept of civilization which remains mute to famine, wars and killings in society - a civilization that adopts degradation and corruption as a pattern of life, according to Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qassimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah.

Addressing a gathering of young Muslim women from 36 countries at the opening of the Second International Muslim Women's Conference at the Sharjah Women's Club last night , Sheikha Jawaher said: "Today's civilization encourages women to act against her nature, her dignity and her self-respect, making her unable to perform her duties to herself and her family."

She said: "Civilization does not mean that human beings would forgo their values and violate teachings of their religion."

Pointing out that the concept of civilization differed from one society to another depending on their cultures and the contributions of their members to the development process, Sheikha Jawaher, who is also the Chairperson of the women's club and of the Sharjah Supreme Council for Family, said that the Islamic civilization had realized the meaning of human civilization which was based on a man's respect to his society and to himself.

"It is with this concept that the Islamic nation lived its golden era during which it spread its culture in the East and the West. However, here we are crying for this concept which changed and vanished through the centuries," added Sheikha Jawaher.

She called upon the women attending the conference to beware of the calls for freedom which encouraged women to dress like men, talk like men and lose their feminity.

"My dear daughters, you should not imitate the non-Muslim Western women who have mistaken the concept of freedom as being able to behave badly."

She stressed that Islam protected women through its teachings and rules, urging Muslim girls to adhere to Islamic ideologies and principles in order to perform their role in enhancing civilization.

The International Women's Conference is organized for the second time by the Sharjah Women's Club, following the success of the first one. The seven-day conference is being held under the theme 'activating the cultural role of Muslim women'. Women aged between 16 and 22 are taking part in the conference which features lectures, a research competition, a Holy Quran competition and several literary and art activities.

"This gathering is a means to prove that the Muslim nation is unified despite the geographic distances which keep us apart," said Sheikha Jawaher.

Safia Ahmed from the UAE delegation of 12 women, said that it was time for Muslim women to practically contribute to the development of their nation.

"It is a true invitation to adopt a more courageous stand in the face of the outside attack of dangerous and new cultural concepts. We need not take a defensive stance any more, but should perform our responsibility in building our societies through the spread of science, knowledge and culture," she said.

High, high the carvings are
That wrestle with thy soul; be conscious still
And ever of thy model, Fatimah,
So that thy branch may bear a new Hussein,
Our garden blossom with the Golden Age.'
