Need help gaining weight!

Dear Sisters,

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

Some of the Sisters here might already know that I am ill. Well, I have a problem with losing too much weight at once. :( I am 5'7" and 119 lbs. I have lost 5 lbs. in the last week! My typical weight is 126 lbs. My doctor is very concerned because besides the weight loss, I am very depressed. He has told me that I should drink milkshakes, eat high carb foods and stay away from sugars.

Does anyone here know anything that I can try? The illness that I have makes my stomach very upset. My stomach can only tolerate mildly bland foods. Almost everything gives me heartburn and makes life pretty much unbearable.

Because of this I have pretty much just stopped eating. :( I eat maybe one meal a day and snack on saltine crackers the rest of the time.

Please, I need help. Any diet that is mild but will help me either put on weight, or maintain the weight I have without losing anymore would be great!

Thanks for listening!

Wa'assalam,

Serena

walaikum salaam wrt,

sister our suggestions might not work well for you depending on your illness. it may be better for you to ask your doctor to recommend a nutritionist to help you. they would know better what foods you can keep down and what you wouldn't be able to.

we will of course make dua for you insha Allah too

Sister Jannah,

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

JazakAllah Khair for the advice. My doctor is referring me to a nutritionist, unfortunately it will not be for another 3 weeks. My doctor has said that I can eat anything I want, if tolerated. I just don't know what foods would help me to gain weight.

It's a tough problem...but, with every hardship comes ease, Insha'Allah :)

Wa'assalam,

Serena

If you go to a chemist (drugstore) you can get the so-called "cosmonaut food".  This has everything you need ie vitamins etc in a powdered form or sometimes in a ready made drink. Give it a try.
Also if you take tablets with artichokes in them, this will help your stomach to process the food better.
My father in law lost 50Kg in two months and we had to feed him up too!!

hope this helps and I pray to Allah that you'll get over this soon.

Dear Sisters,

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

JazakAllahKhair for all the advice and prayers, you are all in my dua's. :)

I spoke with my doctor today and he put me on the following supplements, ugh!! The list is huge, but if it helps great!

Ferrous Sulfate (Iron) 100mg daily.
Prenatal vitamins...lol (He says they are stronger than normal multivitamins)
Vitamin B12 shots, once a week for 12 weeks.
Liquid garlic (He says it's calming to the stomach)???
Valerian drops (for the nerves)
Vitamin C - 2000mg daily, if tolerated.
Calcium - 250mg daily
Magnesium - 155 mg daily
Protein shakes 4 times daily.

He said to eat 8-10 small meals a day so that my stomach never gets *empty* (The opposite of what has helped me...but he's the doc)

That's a lot. Do any of you take these type of supplements? If so, how has it helped you?

Sorry if this offends any of you, I'm just trying to find some help.

May Allah (swt) bless all of you for your continued help!

Wa'assalam,

Serena :)

I'm no expert, but the list looks pretty good.  I was thinking about protein shakes also when I read your first post.  You can't go wrong with vitamins, and more vitamins!  I've heard about liquid garlic helping with stomach ailments, so no surprise there either.

Just do as the doctor says and make du'aa!  And may Allah make this illness of yours a cause of purifying your sins ... Ameen.

I say to you what the Prophet (pbuh) used to say to the people who were ill:

"Tahooraa, insha Allah."

Wassalamu alaikum.

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
I hope you are all well, by the grace and mercy of Allah.
Serena, besides following the doctor's orders, you may also want to check out some books on the medicine of the Prophet (by Ibn Jawziyyah, Ibn Sina, etc, can't think of titles right now).  It's amazing what Allah revealed to the Prophet >1400 years ago, a lot of things which we will only come to know in the future, if at all, insha'Allah.  But the word of Allah is true!  Anyways, here are some ahadith I've found on the subject, they are mostly general since I'm not sure what your ailment is exactly.  Some/all may be relevant...by the way, my uncle in Pakistan is among a long line of "hakeems" (homeopathic healers who employ Islamic medicine in their practice), he swears by the 3rd hadith listed, makes his patients repeat it all the time when taking medication or for those suffering from accidental ingestion of poison, etc.  Personally, I use honey and black seed all the time, haven't had very many illnesses, alhamdulillah, but that could be due to any reason, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.  Take advantage of good health while you have it, brothers & sisters.
And in case anyone can clarify, is At-Talbina barley?  I've been wondering about this...jazaakAllahu khairan!

----------------------------------------------
Abu Dawud, Book 28, Number 3894:
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:
My mother intended to make me fat to send me to the (house of) the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). But nothing which he desired benefited me till she gave me cucumber with fresh dates to eat. Then I became fat as good (as she desired).

Abu Dawud, Book 28, Number 3865:
Narrated AbudDarda:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Allah has sent down both the disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for every disease, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.

Abu Dawud, Book 28, Number 3889:
Narrated AbuSalih Zakwan as-Samman:
A man from Aslam tribe said: I was sitting with the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him). A man from among his Companions came and said: Apostle of Allah! I have been stung last night, and I could not sleep till morning. He asked: What was that? He replied: A scorpion.
He said: Oh, had you said in the evening: "I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created," nothing would have harmed you, Allah willing.

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 70, Number 545:
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that."

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 639:
Narrated 'Aisha:
The Prophet used to treat some of his wives by passing his right hand over the place of ailment and used to say, "O Allah, the Lord of the people! Remove the trouble and heal the patient, for You are the Healer. No healing is of any avail but Yours; healing that will leave behind no ailment."

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 584:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
(The Prophet said), "Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing)." But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire."

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 588:
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
A man came to the Prophet and said, "My brother has some abdominal trouble." The Prophet said to him "Let him drink honey." The man came for the second time and the Prophet said to him, 'Let him drink honey." He came for the third time and the Prophet said, "Let him drink honey." He returned again and said, "I have done that ' The Prophet then said, "Allah has said the truth, but your brother's abdomen has told a lie. Let him drink honey." So he made him drink honey and he was cured.

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 591:
Narrated Khalid bin Sad:
We went out and Ghalib bin Abjar was accompanying us. He fell ill on the way and when we arrived at Medina he was still sick. Ibn Abi 'Atiq came to visit him and said to us, "Treat him with black cumin. Take five or seven seeds and crush them (mix the powder with oil) and drop the resulting mixture into both nostrils, for 'Aisha has narrated to me that she heard the Prophet saying, 'This black cumin is healing for all diseases except As-Sam.' Aisha said, 'What is As-Sam?' He said, 'Death."

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 592:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "There is healing in black cumin for all diseases except death."

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 71, Number 593:
Narrated 'Ursa:
Aisha used to recommend At-Talbina for the sick and for such a person as grieved over a dead person. She used to say, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'At-Talbina gives rest to the heart of the patient and makes it active and relieves some of his sorrow and grief.' "
