as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

whatever happened to doing reviews every month? ok, here's mine...

The World of the Jinn and Devils
by Dr. Umar Sulaiman al-Ashqar
translated by Jamaal al-Din M. Zarabozo

An interesting book...

Each point made by the author is supplemented with specific texts from Quran and/or ahadeeth, but are not redundant or tedious...  there are also short excerpts from works by Ibn Taymeeyah, al-Jawziy, Ibn al-Qayyim etc, which were interesting to read.  The footnotes by Zarabozo were helpful, especially when mentioning the book title the excerpts were taken from, clarifying some of the points the original author made, and in determing the authenticity of certain texts and therefore the strength of certain arguments..

the writing style wasn't particularly eloquent but clear and with no ambiguous terminology or language.

The part that interested me most was the chapter on the capabilities of satan, including appearing as humans, seances, magic, the extent of the jinn's knowledge of the unseen, jinns and ufo's, exorcisms, etc.  It was interesting to read not just legislation about such things but actual stories of incidents that have taken place...  that's what I found most interesting... especially those that are reported to have happened back in the day, like in the time of Ibn Taymiyyah...

The actual, I guess "scholarship" of the book I did not question because the points made seemed well rooted and were not things I have not heard before.  The only things I can think of that made me go "hmm.." was the bit about so-called spiritualist Peter Goodwin, his being granted aid of jinn and their subsequent abandoning of him when he did not do what they wanted... but I've never heard of Peter Goodwin before, so that may be the cause of my skepticism... the mention of him in the book reminded me of an article I read that claimed David Copperfield consorted with jinn... which may be true but I doubt that their "magic" is the real deal.

chapter 5 of the book is called "the weapons of the believer in his war against satan" which automatically reminded me of some lyrics from a myna raps song:  i got my uzi of eman / my bazooka of quran / my m-16 of my deen of Islam... :)

the chapter had a lot of good reminders.. and I really really liked the last section on the state of our hearts, and things we can do to help us focus in salah and in our lives and prevent shaytan from taking us down...

It's a good book, that adequately covers the subject and was interesting to read.  I'd give it .

wasalaamu alaykum.

What is the difference between this book and Ibn Taymiyyah's Essay on the Jinn?

Which is better?

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

Hmm... now that I think about it I don't think I've ever read Taymeeya's Essay on Jinn in it's entirety.  I think I've only read bits and pieces of it that are online, but I have yet to have read the entire book.  I hear that the book includes some things on possession, excorcisms and some stuff by Ibn Baaz?  Do you know if the entire thing is online somewhere?  Have you read it?  Maybe you can write a review for it? :)

wasalaam.

yes i've read it
passed it to a friend who lost it...lol

his view can be summarised as
sometimes the only reason certain types of unislamic excorcisms work is because the jinn are pleased when you compliment them
and the shaytaans are happy that they have led you astray but neverthless in non-islamic excorcisms they always return
rejects the idea of beating the person
rejects islamic amulets etc
does a good analysis of different cultures attaempts to get rid of jinn
plus some interviews with muslim excorcists
most said more than 90% of cases they receive they do not believe to be jinn

i think the book is his phd thesis

Can we stop this nonsense about Copperfield being in league with Satan ? First, it is haram to ascribe this to anyone without evidence, and secondly, he is just an ILLUSIONIST.

PS That does NOT mean that being an illusioninst is halal, but that'a a topic for the knowedgable.
