MUSLIM BROTHER BECOMES HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP!!!

Woo Hoo! Hasim Rahman, a brother given little chance of beating Lennox Lewis (22 to 1), has just knocked him out. It was amazing listening to it on BBC. A lot of people had said that Lewis had not taken Rahman seriously.

"Rahman attributes his ability to recover from his losses to his Muslim beliefs, which he says keep him focused on what's important in life. On a recent morning at his Johannesburg hotel, Rahman woke up at 5 to pray - the first of five times each day that he kneels down with his team members."

It is funny that BBC has to wait to interview him again because Rahman left to go pray. The fight was at dawn in South Africa so perhaps he hadn't done Fajr yet. Had to finish the fight quickly :).

I caught some of his post fight interview and he seems to be a genuine practising Muslim.

Anyone know anything more about him? I'd never heard of him until the fight

Rahman dethrones Lewis with stunning fifth-round KO

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/boxing/news/2001/04/21/lewis_rahman_ap/

BRAKPAN, South Africa (AP) -- Hasim Rahman's knockout of Lennox Lennox did
more than install a new heavyweight champion. It derailed perhaps the most
lucrative fight in boxing history.

Rahman flattened Lewis with a stunning right hand near the end of the
fifth round early Sunday to capture the WBC and IBF titles.

"I kept my prayers going and did all my training. And I came up with one
punch," Rahman said. "One punch."

That blow effectively killed any chance of a Lewis bout against Mike Tyson
-- potentially a $100 million showdown -- happening anytime soon.

"No Lewis-Tyson! No Lewis-Tyson!" Rahman yelled in the ring after the
fight.

Lewis-Tyson had been on hold because of a clash of TV contracts -- Lewis
is with HBO, and Tyson with Showtime -- and now might never happen after
Lewis' stunning upset loss.

"There's no Mike Tyson if I don't get past Hasim Rahman, simple as that,"
Lewis said.

Rahman, a 28-year-old fighter from Baltimore, chased the champion across
the ring and, with Lewis smiling defiantly at him, unleashed a right cross
that caught the champion flush on the jaw and sent him sprawling to the
canvas.

Lying on his back for several seconds, Lewis was unable to beat the count
and, at 2:32 of the fifth round, the world of boxing had a new, totally
unexpected, heavyweight champion.

The finish was eerily similar to Lewis' last loss, on Sept. 24, 1994, when
Oliver McCall floored him with a right hand.

"I felt fine in there. I was going about my work nice and comfortably and
there was no way Hasim Rahman could beat me," Lewis said. "This is just
what happens in heavyweight boxing. He hit me with a good shot. That's the
situation when you get two big guys in there with right hands."

Not long after the fight started at about 5:30 a.m. -- the pre-dawn local
time put the fight on U.S. TV at night -- there were signs that an upset
was in the cards, with Rahman (35-2) clipping Lewis on the chin in the
second round.

Lewis seemed intent on ignoring his left jab, and instead concentrated on
throwing big right hands.

In the third round, Lewis landed a left, followed by a left-right
combination, but Rahman responded with a big right hand of his own.

Lewis (38-2-1) had Rahman in trouble early in the fourth but was rocked by
a left hook and hundreds among the 5,500 in the crowd at Carnival City
Casino began chanting "Hasim! Hasim!"

Lewis' stamina was questioned because he arrived in Johannesburg only two
weeks before the fight, with little time to get used to the 5,200-foot
altitude. That showed in the fifth round as he clearly began breathing
heavily.

Rahman, throwing punches on the run, had Lewis backpedalling and the
challenger ended the fight with the spectacular knockout punch.

"I told you all I was confident. Not one time since the fight was made was
I nervous," said Rahman, who put himself in line for a much bigger payday
than the reported $1.5 million he earned Sunday.

"He came out and tried to dictate the pace but I wouldn't let him. I never
took an opponent serious before this. I felt like if I didn't train
properly he would have the edge."

Lewis went into the bout at his heaviest weight ever -- 253 pounds, 16
more than the challenger, who also surrendered 3 inches in height and 9
inches in reach.

While Rahman had been in South Africa for about a month to prepare for his
title shot, Lewis was here half as long after taking time off to film the
remake of "Ocean's Eleven" with Julia Roberts, George Clooney and Brad
Pitt.

Lewis has a rematch clause in his contract.

"I definitely want the rematch," he said. "Hasim Rahman is the champ
today. The second time around Hasim Rahman is going to go."

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Twenty facts you never knew about Hasim Rahman

1) Rahman is 28-years-old

2) He was brought up in Baltimore, Maryland in America.

3) As an amateur, he spent two years under the guidance of Kevin Rooney, Mike Tyson's former trainer.

4) The Wahoos Sports Bar and Grill in Randallstown, Baltimore is going to name a burger after him.

5) He currently lives in Abingdon, Harford.

6) The new champion was so confident of victory over Lewis that he told his mother Joyce Rahman to quit her job as a correctional officer. Which she did.

7) To celebrate one of his children's birthdays, he rented ponies for all the neighbourhood children to ride.

8) Rahman shares his home with teenage cousin Terry Frierson. According to the youngster, the relationship is more akin to that of a father and son.

9) Rahman's wife Crystal had never watched one of her husband's fights live until Sunday. But she was at ringside in Carnival City because she felt confident that her man would win.

10) Rahman's career was nearly derailed a long time ago.

He was a passenger in a friend's truck that was speeding to Baltimore Community College.

The truck flipped, killing his friend, whilst his face was pinned under the gas tank.

He needed more than 500 stitches, and the left side of his face remains badly scarred.

11) He lost his unbeaten record in controversial circumstances to New Zealand's David Tua.

The new champion was outboxing Tua until being hit by a punch thrown blatantly after the bell in the tenth round

Rahman never recovered and was stopped in the following round.

12) The other blemish on his record was a knockout loss to Russian Oleg Maskaev.

In that fight, the American was actually punched out of the ring.

13) His ring idol was Marvellous Marvin Hagler, who was of course ringside working for the BBC when Rahman pulled off his upset.

14) As a Muslim, he prays five times a day.

15) His father, John Cason, who plays a part in training, is a retired engineer and chaplain in the Maryland prison system.

16) The new champion has three children - Hasim Jr., nine; Sharif, four; and Amirah, two.

17) Rahman's success was so unexpected that the town of his residence had not prepared a welcoming party for the new champion.

18) The new champion attributes his success to nothing more than hard work. He believes that he never trained hard for any fight before taking on Lewis.

19) He spent a large portion of his training at the Catskill Mountains in New York, ironically the former home of potential future foe Mike Tyson.

20) The first gym he ever stepped into was the Broadway and Eager Street, a gym which has been run since 1943 by Mack Lewis, an 82-year-old veteran of the fight game.

[slm]Where is that from? It sounds familiar but I can't put my finger on it.

By the way, anyone know the deal about his name? Everyone is pronouncing it Rakhman, even though it is spelled Rahman. I'm not sure if it is he or other people who wants it pronounced that way, but apparently his nickname "Rock" is derived from the Rahman...Anyways this confuses me...[slm]

During the fight, the announcers kept saying "rockman" since his nickname is Rock.  I saw the fight yesterday (HBO repeat) and the KO blow was near-perfect, Lewis never saw it coming.  In the post-fight interview, he said he made dua and extra prayers and that's why he was succesful and is confident he can defend against anyone.

Assalaamulaikum. One thing to think about though is that every scholar I have seen comment on boxing has stated that it is haram. Here are some of their sources.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "If somebody fights (or beats somebody) then he should avoid the face." [Sahih al-Bukhari Vol III Hadith 734.]

and also

Narrated Salim: Ibn 'Umar said, "The Prophet forbade beating (animals) on the face." [Sahih al-Bukhari Vol VII Hadith 449]

Here was some commentary I came across on these sources from Mas'ud Ahmed Khan:
------------------
So we know that the word "forbade" here seems to indicate that this action is haraam when done to animals and humans are above animals in all respects. When the damage to a person is so severe such as brain damage or worse, fatal, then this has to be considered haraam, for their is no reason to suffer such injuries. Our bodies and lives are an
amanah (trust) from Allah ta'ala given to us for safe keeping, they do not belong to us to do as we choose, so we have no right to participate in a sport whose object is intense physical damage or any other activity that violates the amanah.
-----------

Now there is a lot of talk of Rahman(He pronounces it Rockman) fighting fellow Muslim Mike Tyson. While the issue of boxing in itself being haram may still be questioned, I do not think anybody could justify two Muslim brothers beating each other severely just for sport. At least before they were hitting the kuffar. If the fight goes on, I hope that Muslims distance themselves from it and even condemn the boxers. While Mike Tyson has had many problems, he is still a Muslim and other boxers like former British champion Chris Eubank, now Hamdan Eubank said they first heard of Islam through Tyson. There is no way that they should fight each other.

Here is an excerpt from a Tyson press conference before a fight in London in Jan 2000. Though his managers have openly been trying hard to pull him away from Islam, he still visited a Masjid during his visit.

--------
"I've been plenty of religions," he said, when asked about his conversion to Islam. "I been a Catholic, I been a Christian. It's just who I am but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm a good person because I'm a Moslem.

"We're all judged by our deeds and our conduct."
--------

Hmm, Tyson may someday have something valuable to offer the Ummah once he has better people influencing him.

Assalamu alaikum dude...ummm..ameen to the "process with dignity". as for "sabr" (patience) I have heard from many elders that one should not ask for "sabr". i recall a time when i was talking to some baji (older sis type of girl),and she asked me something, and i replied "dua Allah give me patience". she went on about how if one asks for patience, they are asking for difficulty..we need patience when we are in a crisis..she told me to ask for "aafiuth" not sure how to translate that..i guess that means betterment or something to that effect. whatever Allah grants, may it be for our best Insha'Allah. Jazaka'Allah Khair and i'm sorry if this confused you or anyone else

A minor correction to one of your facts

The champ attributed his success to his remaining steadfast in his prayers and his father's Dua's plus hard work. That is a quote.

Amina,

I heard one brother telling me a hadith in which someone asked the Propeht SAW to make dua for patience for him, and the Prophet SAW replied : "Say Rabbana Atanya fidunya hasnatan wa fil akhirati hasantan wa qi naa adhaar binaar (O Our Lord, give us good in this world and the hereafter, and save us from the fire of hell)".

Assalaam alaykum warahmatullah..

Champ?!? what a useless 'success' story for muslims.
I dont know why everybody is so happy about the issue?, i mean what has his victory got to do with anything? how has his match helped the muslim ummah? how has it helped islam??
All the razmatazz of boxing is pure fitna. boxers get all proud and so arrogant ie prince naseem is a classical example.Arrogance is a form of shirk! Its just like when for example pakistan won the cricket world cup! i mean big deal! We muslim are in a state of emergency and people of seriousness and we are becoming so shallow as to support and being cheerful because of some kuffar prize(heavyweight champ) under a kuffar programe , sport.
Im not even sure what the hukm sharii is of boxing, ie bleeding a human for sake of just arrogance and show!

I guess it's like a self-esteem boost, a muslim heavyweight champ.  The object of boxing is not to kill your opponent, but to use strategy and techniques to knock him down/out for 10 seconds.  Yes, people have been severely hurt and there have been deaths in the ring, but these things happen in a physical contact sport.  I'm not saying it's ok, but boxers work and train hard and for an underrated muslim boxer to knock out the heavyweight champ, that's pretty cool.
Muhammad Ali became a millionaire through boxing and now spends his time and money on dawah causes.  I have to agree on prince naseem, when i saw his last fight i was really embarrased at the show he put on, but then he lost, so the show was useless.  Br. Hasim was humble before and after his victory.
