Asalaam Alaykum wrwb

There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the market-place I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture; now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the market-place and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.

What do you think the moral is???

Assalam-u-Alaikum,

The moral seems to be that there is no way to escape death.   When the servant was seen in the market by death, death was surprised since he was supposed to take the servant's life in Samarra.  The servant tried to escape death by going to Samarra... the very pace of his death... so rather than escaping, he was bringing himself closer to death.

Yep I'd agree

I guess you could also argue a case along the lines that you shouldn't busy yourself in things which you have no control over for this will only lead to wasting time and the accomplishment of nothing beneficial.

assalamu'alaikum a rahmatullah,

The answer is quite clear:  A Muslim should know that the angel of death
looks dreadful to a kaafir, lacking a face, in a hideous form, but to a mu'min,
that same angel looks like  a beautiful man dressed in white (a hadeeth).  He
then made the decision to run from it, thereby once again displaying his lack of
faith.  It is obvious that one cannot run from death... but it is far less
obvious that we must be prepared to embrace it and not be afraid of it.... for when
the angel of death comes to each of us, if he is in the form of a beautiful man
dressed in white, then we should desire to look upon him, and not run, as the
servant did, for facing him is inevitable.

Asalaam Alaykum :-)

Yes you are all correct.

It's a simple concept, but I thought it eloquently put. Do you know what a self-fulfilling prophecy is?  Well death is essentially a self-fulfilling prophecy for each and every person, and anyone who thinks they can avoid death is trying to avoid the unavoidable. But the story goes beyond death, and alas mirrors other duties that we have in this life...and how some are as unavoidable as death, and in our struggle to avoid them we actually move closer to them.

here's my favourite narration used to answer the question of is there a God, if so how do we know?

A bedouin was asked this question and he said:

"When you see camel droppings in the desert, you know that a camel has been there.  When you see footprints in the sand that shows eveidence of a man.  Therefore doesn't the earth, the heavens and everything that lies in between poit to the existence of the creator?"
