Here are a couple of threads:

But why take interest? I believe almost all financial dealings in this country can be done without taking interest.

asalm walakum,, interest is harram, there is a hadith that state that interest has seventy parts, the least has the sin of committing zina with your own mother in front of the kabbah.
people who take interest declare war against Allah and his messenger. the asbabulnazul of this verse was, after the people of taif had became Muslim, they carried on dealing with it, so the messenger of Allah pbh, sent the army to deal with them, they were surrounded in their fort, and their fort was bombarded with snakes and fire. this continued until they stopped their dirty dealings.
The Muslims will follow the Christians and Jews even if it takes them down a lizards hole.
riba is harram, in the books of the Christians, Jews and even the Buddhists. the people before us made it hallal for them selves using idiotic excuses. the Jews claim the verse only refers to Jews, and take riba from who they term "inferior races", the Christians say, “god only meant big riba”, “even though it is harram, Jesus died for our sins, so there is no harm in it”. The riba lover who call them selves Muslims have their own excuses. They bend verses, use invalid evidences, and miss quote the ulimah. Riba is clearly harram, from the Quran itself.  There are people who call them selves ulimah who might say otherwise, but we must remember the time we live in, this is a time when a word of truth means being put in prison and watching your wife and daughter being gang raped by policemen in front of you, being labelled a liar, extremist and khawarij, and a lie means respect, big salaries, respect again, being called a alim, being given big titles and positions, having people follow you and being known by people. You might know people who have been given the title of alim, who make it legal, but I bet you also know countless others who have been given the title who make other things Hallal. Examples:
government ulimah in India have declared that Kashmir is not valid jihad and it is lawful to serve in the Indian army.
Government ulimah in turkey have stated hijab is no longer farrad for students and solders in the army should not pray salat.
Government ulimah in Uzbekistan have stated Islam has no khilafah, jihad or Islamic law, and to obey the Jew karimov is farrad.
Government ulimah in Syria had given a fatwa legalising the Hamma massacare, stating that the kaffar Asad is a lagitamate Islamic ruler and to obey him is farrad. And also stating that iqwan al muslimeen are kaffar, khawarig and should be fort. This resulted in the population of that city being massacred, the president own figures state 50 000. The real figure is probably much higher.
What ever you see happening in the countries with Muslim populations has been legalised by some one with the title of alim.

So what do you do with the interest? Do you  have to refuse it from the bank or can you take it out and donate it to someone?

Does this mean that pension plans where the money is invested over a thirty year period is also haraam?

asalm walakum, before I answer, I will say what a alim said to me when I asked him a question on riba, I cant remembers his exact words but the meaning has stuck with me, "are you looking for the answer, or are you looking for justification".
when I was in Syria 'riba loving ulimah' in one of the places I was studying had tried to justify riba, by saying it was hallal in dar al harb because ibn abas took it, and Mohammed pbh didn't speak out against him taking it.
I found out from the shake(may Allah reword him) later that ibn abas was not Muslim at the time, and once he became Muslim he stopped riba transactions.

it is not the money which is harram, its the contract. any money that belongs to you before you became Muslim is yours even if you earned it with a harram contact. riba is not the only harram contract!
after you become Muslim, you should stop not only the harram contracts, but harram dress, harram food and drink, harram methods of socialising such as backbiting and freemixing etc.
so what about banks? opening a savings account is clearly harram, cause the purpose of the account is to gain interest, which is a harram method of earning money, like prostitution , drug smuggling and selling alcohol.
in the past current accounts did not offer interest, so these are clearly hallal, today a lot of banks put interest on current accounts, some don't. most who don't have non interest accounts will be willing to give you one if you ask.
so how about the current account with interest? in Islam if you make a contract with hallal and harram parts to it, only the hallal parts are valid. so as far as your concerned you are just putting money in a bank for storage, you have nothing to do with the interest they may put in your account. you put in ten pounds you take out 10 pounds. any thing else in you account is nothing to do with you, you have no right to take it, or give it to the bank. it is money with no owner, like the property of the murtad.
