hello all,
i'm iranna and obviously i'ma new member...after much nagging from se7vn "i decided" to do my intro. my first few attempts were named "wasaaah" and "life and times with the three musketeers" but after several attempts and freak accidents i finally get to let u into my world.
first off, no, my real name isn't iranna, it's the name of one of the moons of venus-being female- i thought it was a really cool alias.
also what brought me here was my friendship with three special girls by the name se7vn, dhikr, and khathija(i hope i spelled their names right:)
i met se7vn and dhikr in ninth grade, and khathija when i was in the eleventh.  i call them the 3musketeers (of course not to their face)

what inspired me to join was that i'm going faaaaar faaar away to college and i won't see them on a regular basis.  so i'll be with them in spirit. ummmmmm let me see what else......

i guess you should no i'm not muslim you can consider me a deist(-i think being agnostic is disrespectful-not to knock any agnostics.)
also i'm african-american or black, (whatever)
and my parents are both from jamaica-which makes for an "interesting" home-life.

that's about all i can say right now-later i'll enlighten you with some 3musketeers stories.
for now-peace-love iranna
better known as tibet :P

p.s. i love books, i like j.d. salinger, john irving, richard wright, carl sagan- recommend some ok- it'll be interesting to see what ya'll read
ok bye for real

TIBET!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8-)

good to have you on chica ;-D

iranna is seriously one of my closest friends. :)  she's awesome.. devotes a lot of her time and energy to good causes.. she's actually worked on meccah [the muslim youth group we started in our high school] harder than a lot of the muslims here :)

she's a non-conformist, someone who questions things and who's open minded.  A rebel.  :)  We've chilled, learned, and experienced a lot together... I'd say she's my dawg (if I were that ghetto :P)

treat her well y'all... :)

and iranna keep all this good stuff I've said in mind before you start telling stories :P (I'm sure you have some embarassing stories about jannah too... please share)

ps - watch out for da bluk bunnee, hahaha ;)

Hi,

I will admit that "a prayer for owen meany" made me cry towards the end *alot.* But i didn't like the characters when they were younger, their childhood just seemed so fake. I mean kids are not into sex that much as these kids seemed to be while they were in elementary school! At least that's what i think.  Although Owen did a heroic act towards the end and he seemed to have a pretty good heart towards most people, to his parents he could be very mean for no clear reason. Do you recall the scence in the chruch during christmas time when own is supposed to be the baby jesus in the manger and he yells at his parents and they leave? And he did some pretty bad vandalizing.

The book was written very well and the language was very powerful at times, but I guess I have reservations about that book becasue the irving was trying to draw a prallel between Jesus (A) and Owen meany. That i found to be offending for obvious reason, (being Muslims and all).

What do you think? What's your opinion on the book?

Saleema

saleema alot of irving's books are offensive..but u let him get away with it because he writes so well.  the problem i have is i know the movie simon birch which is based on owen meany.  i can't wait to finish it...

p.s. if u read... the cider house rules... u might see him pushing his beliefs about abortion down ur throat...but he masks it well...other than that i liked that too.
in owen meany is he tryin to make fun of religion...makes you think huh?

Hey Iranna,

Really? Cedar house is like in your face type of book too? Hmmmmm... I was planning on reading it. I think i will go ahead and read it still.

But the most offensive book that I read in my entire life was "blue eyes" by tony morrison. She is a very controversial author too. People across the US have called on libraries to censor her book "Song of Solomon." Blue eyes is written very well too. I loved the style of her writing. I was amazed at her genius until I get to the part where the father of the main character rapes her daughter while drunk and Morrison justifies the incestual rape by saying that the father's childhood was bad and so that's why he did that. That turned me off. That was very wrong of her. Have you read blue eyes? If you are able to ignore that part then it's a good read.

later,
Saleema

i think toni morrison is an amazing writer... i have yet to read blue eyes...did she justify it in the book or in real life?

Hello,

No she tried to justify it in real life. blue eyes is a very deep book. just try to ignore that part. :) She talks about things in there that society is uncomfortable to talk about and it really opens up your mind.
