As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Its been a long time since I have last posted. Insha'Allah I will get more into again.

I hate to be the party pooper but this is something we as Muslims need to know!

Assalamu alaikum
What is the ruling concerning joking? Is it considered useless and vain speech? Note that it does not contain any ridiculing of the religion.
Jazakum allah alf Khair

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Wa ‘alaykum al-salaam wa rahmat-Allaahi wa barakaatuhu.

There is no harm in joking by words and anecdotes, if they are truthful and real, especially if it is not done often. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to joke but he would only speak the truth. If it is with lying, then it is not allowed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Woe to the one who speaks and tells a lie in order to make the people laugh at it. Woe to him. Then again, woe to him."
This was recorded by Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasal with a good chain

Assalam-o-alaikum

I have a corollary question....

If a joke is about a person and is done in front of him/ her and he/she does not like it then can we really do it?

and if it is done when he/ she is absent and we know that he/ she does not like it, it might come under gheebah....

What to do?

Wassalam

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Interesting questions Br Abid. Here's my two penny's worth
If a joke is about a person and is done in front of him/ her and he/she does not like it then can we really do it?
Sometimes we make jokes about funny situations we've been in and stuff but once we start joking about someone, it gets a bit more complicated.

The hardest thing to decide is whether they will understand what you're trying to say or will they indeed find it offensive. Sometimes best friends joke around with each other not really realising that they may inadvertently be causing the other pain.

How can you really compensate someone for the distress you may cause them?
and if it is done when he/ she is absent and we know that he/ she does not like it, it might come under gheebah....
Really are on dangerous ground here!

Oh and btw welcome to the board ;-)

salam,
i think if u know that sum1 gets upset with a particular joke, then u r better of just leaving him/her alone.

theres no point in joking around wen ur gunna upset sum1, jokes r there to faff not to cry:-)

Neways if sum1 can't take a joke then don't crack 1 at them, u get ppl that can't!!!

wa-salam
