Swearing by Allah and Quran

I was recently involved in a dispute with a brother from my community.  I had been accused by this brother of doing something I hadn't done.  The community leaders had a meeting with both of us, and I was asked to swear by Allah if I had done such and such.  I ended up swearing by Allah that I did not do it.  I've also heard of other disputes in communities where swearing by the Quran is common.  Is this a good practice?  In an Islamic state/court, how do they do it?

Plus, what about those people who constantly swear by Allah, "WAllahi, WAllahi!"  It is being used for everything: from talking about Hadith/Quran to normal everyday events.  Is this a permissible or recommended practice?

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

From the *very little* I can remember from a khatira on this during ramadhan a couple years back... swearing by Allah is serious and should only be done in cases of serious accusation or when it's really necessary to emphasize the veracity of something.  I remember him speaking for quite a while about the serious consequences that come with falsely swearing by Allah, and by swearing by other than Allah (the ka'abah, the prophet [saw], righteous people, your mother, the heads of people etc) and even the danger of shirk that comes with swearing by other than Allah.  He also mentioned how it is common in some places to say "wAllah" often... he said that because the consequences of swearing by Allah are so dangerous, this is something we should try to avoid, and we should be careful about the words we use.  We should probably be careful in english as well with "I swear to God.."

I have never heard of people swearing by the Qur'an.

swearing by the Qur'an is permissable as it is one of his attributes, namely his speech.  As for what Se7en said regarding abuse of this oath then that is so true.  It is not an easy thing to make such an oath.  It is narrated that a man once stole something in front of 'Isa ibn Maryam (alayhis-salam) and when questioned he swore by Allah that he hadn't.  To which this noble prophet replied, "My eyes have lied and you have spoken the truth".  Bringing Allah into matters is a very big thing.
He also mentioned how it is common in some places to say "wAllah" often
Hmmm, I have noticed it very common amongst certain groups of Arabs and Somalis (all deference to both groups)

ps It is not allowed to swear by your mothers grave, (Brit thing, sorry)
