[REVIEW] Islam: The Empowering of Women
by Aisha Bewley

This book starts out fantastic. Sr. Aisha covers alot of much needed topics such as the whole "Excessive Focus on Women's Dress". Read an excerpt in this post.

She then goes on to discuss the "scholarly woman" in Islam and lists so many excellent examples of women who were famous religious scholars, writers, poets, doctors and teachers throughout Islamic history.  She then discusses some theories on what happenned to change this ! She continues on to talk about the "political woman" in Islam -- all the women who were political and influenced decisions in Islamic society.

Lastly she delves into the "spiritual woman". However from the second page of this chapter until the end of this book somehow she gets on the topic of tassawuf and starts discusing what it was, what it is and all the historical pros, cons, arguments, etc etc... and all the issues that go along with it!! So my question is .. what he heck?? Up until this point the book is excellent. She brings up alot of good points and discusses alot of issues about empowering women.. but then the book just degenerates into a treatise of sufism?? Maybe this should be two books? Maybe the author is trying to get some points across about tassawuf in islam and is disguising them in a book about women in islam or vice versa?? I dunno. I just think it took away from the message in the book completely and left the reader hanging.. no closure!! no conclusions... oh well.

I give this book stars [out of 5]for a great much needed message but minus a star for the odd ending.
