how come americans call some thing a world serius when only americans play in it?
i dont really understand american sports? it looks like there are three of them. baseball, it looks kind of like rounders, which is a kids game, but it is easyer cause in rounders you got to run all the way round, but in baseball you got four places to stop.
they also got basket ball, that looks exactly the same as net ball which is a girls game.
they also got american football, which is nothing like english football. Kind of like rugby though except the in american football they have body armer and helmets to protect themsleves. i think you probebly call it football cause thats how rugby started. in england there is a school called Etion, where the really rich people send their kids, they charge more in a year then most people earn in a life time. any way there was a football match in that school and the ball burst, so one of the kids picked it up and ran to the other teams goul with it. so they made it in to a new internation sport  called rugby. amazing what happens if your rich,, that wouldent of happend in my school, some one would of got his head kicked in for that.

Ok.  Only two kinds of people diss basketball:

1. Those who don't know anything about it!  (jehad, se7en, saleema)
2. Those who can't play!  (kashif)

First off, NBA means National Basketball Association.  Notice it doesn't say International.  The Championship is called NBA Championship, not World Championship.  In this sense, the sport of basketball is smarter and more politically correct than Football or Baseball.

Basketball has nothing to do with lacrosse (or "net ball" as jehad puts it).  These are completely different sports.

Basketball is a MAN's game!  (sorry to all the WNBA fans out there).  It is an extremely physical and tiring game.  There's a lot of banging inside the paint, a lot of jumping, a lot of hussling, diving on the floors, sprinting, muscling your way into the paint for rebounds, etc.  You need to be strong, quick, fast, agile, and much much more to be able to play for real.  Those who know how to play the game know what I'm talking about.

And of course, you need teamwork, strategy, mind-games, all combined with skills to be able to become a truly great team (a la San Antonio Spurs :))

Don't diss basketball!  That just shows that you aint got no game...

Peace out!

Self importance is what it is. For lots of Americans - the US _is_ the whole world!

Exactemente!

Not to forget the fact that the ball hardly touches their feet during an entire game of American football. They should call it 'handball' or something - cos thats what it basically is. Or perhaps 'handball in armour.'

Basketball is just so lame man! What a dead beat sport!

What you want to play is REAL football (or soccer for Americans) which is the #1 popular sport in the world.

Br. don't you mean the Sacramento Kings?  :)

Soccer is boring to watch...I play it, but I can't see myself in front of a TV for 3 hours watching people run up and down this huge field kicking this microscopic white ball...playing is different, you work up a sweat and puts you in shape fast.  But hoops rule!  fun to play and watch!

I love playing basketball! And I could beat any of you at it! I would lick all of you brothers with one hand tied behind my back! Too bad that you are guys because i could show you some of my smooth moves. any of you got sisters in houston that are athletic send them my way and I will teach her and then she can show you some of my cool moves and you can all learn that way. I dissed stupid michael jordan! not basketball.

And soccer is fun to watch but more fun to play. I'm pretty good at playing soccer too. Inshallah maybe we will have a girls soccer team in houston and i will join inshallah. some sisters are working on it right now i think from the fpc.

Football is cool and a man's game.  :) Sissys play rugby.  :D

As for sisters that play b-ball in your area, I hear Princess has a reputation of being one of the best out there and schooling the people there in basketball.  So if you can beat her, then you will have proven your worth.

I thought only guys talked trash!!??

Saleema, too bad my sister doesn't know a thing about basketball.  If she was even as good as my little brother, I'd teach her a few tricks and send her down your way to show how basketball's *really* played!

Se7en ... my bad.  I forgot you had a thing against football, not basketball.

Rashid - Get real man!  Sacramento will be out in 2nd round.

Bhaloo - no there's a difference.  Category 1 says stuff because they just don't know any better.  Category 2 - they're in denial!  They just diss the game because they're no good at it.  Instead of blaming their own skills (or lack thereof), they blame the game itself!

Kashif - no comment!

Wassalaamu alaikum :)

P.S. Arshad, Rashid, and all the (male) hoopsters out there:  Try to go to Isna this year.  Maybe we can get a team together to play in the overnight 3-on-3 tournament!  Then I can see who really got game over here!

Scary thought isn't it Arsalan?  I wonder if they use terms like:

"Take it to the hole!"
"Let's see what ya got baby!"
"Fakes left, fakes right, and hits the fade-away jumper!"
"Basket and the foul!"
"Servin up a facial" (a la Marv Albert)
"Come on punk, let's see what you got"
"You want a piece of me?"
"I got worked"
"Rejected"

See when I talk trash, I can back it up wtih my shooting, and playing against other people brings out my game.

Rashid, Kings are going down.  My Lakers will take care of them next round after we terminate the Trailblazers.

I also heard they don't know the rules of basketball, maybe 2 or 3 at most.

I have to stick with the Kings, always root for the underdog...and just like NBA Jam, when J-Dub gets "on fire" there's no stopping him!

Woah what a showdown and the talking has started!!!  It sounds like a matchup of two gladiators, Hakeem Olajuwon versus Michael Jordan.  The winner would effectively become the champion of Houston and earn the respect of all.

Let me offer some analysis here.  Although height is an advantage in basketball, it can always be countered by speed and/or a good shooter.  I remember one game I played and the other team had a lot of guys that were 6'7" and could dunk the ball.  In that game my shot was "spot on" and I was hitting the outside jumper all/most of the time and we won.  I knew I could drive in on them, because they would block my shot, so I just stayed back and shot them down.  We won that game, but the next game I was so off, so we lost. :(

Who will rise to the occasion and be crowned the champion?  The pressure is there, who will fold?  Look for the drama to unfold in the upcoming days.

Brother Khalid there is one phrase I forgot to mention that is very effective in trash talking and that is the phrase, "You play like a girl."  That is probably one of the most effective phrases and is a real bruiser to the male ego.  I wonder what phrases the British use? ???

so what if its fast-moving, violent and someone can even get killed (?)..

anyways, so...yeah...any sisters out there who play hockey? err..maybe in america its different, a girl can play a "guys game" and vice versa and not get funny looks for it...excluding basketball/netball ;-D..but here in britain...people start thinkin ur a tomboy or sumthin if ur into a 'violent' sport...

ok..Peace..

Hockey!

Assalamualaikum,

Zakira, by hockey you mean field hockey right? Not ice hockey as played in America.

I used to play hockey when I was in boarding school..ermm similar to high school in America and elsewhere. I was the goalkeeper.. hahahahha!! THE SKINIEST KEEPER OF ALL TEAMS!! Man I see other keepers from other girl..they're way big even without the protective padding. I was just abt 100lbs. Eeekk!!! Have to tell to add a lil drama to the story. So, I wear hijab and all. It was extremely hotttttttt with all the paddings when we play under the hot sun!! These are what I wear : thin long sleeve tshirt , on top is the padding, on top of it is the long sleeve jersey, my undercap underneath my hijab and on top of it is my ermm helmet ? My long sports trousers and on top of that is the padding... man!! They call me Transformer!!!!  And MAlaysia is a hot hot hot country!!!!!!!!!!!

We represent the South Zone to National Championship (for boarding schools only) . It was for the PRime Minister award or whatever..can't seem too explain, am just too excited thinking abt those time back at school. All I can say is :

Msg from the other coaches and referee : Pls don't send anymore of your competitors to the hospital! <-- I'm serious abt this. No joke. I'm not proud of this but we have somehow made a few girls ermm more than 5 spend their time in the hospital. We were that bad???

But!! It's none of our fault really. Those girls were at the wrong position. That's why the referee never penalized us for the injuries.
But hockey is a really fun and fast game.

Opss gotta go home now.

Salam,

I used to play ball hockey in High School. I had an awesome team..for three years in a row our team won the girl's houseleague floor hockey championship.

In high school I also used to be an NHL fanatic. I was a die hard Vancouver Canuck fan. I would stay up till 1 am to watch their games. OMG, I knew more about NHL hockey than the jocks in my school. My locker was plastered with my favourite hockey players. I used to call in sports radio shows to discuss hockey...and I did many other insane fanatical things. I even wrote some poetry on hockey to lament a loss. I WAS OBSESSED..alhamudillah I'm long over that. Haven't followed the NHL in ages. Obsessions are not good..Never again..man sports is not good for your health..

I don't play much any more becuase I can't really find any sisters who are interested in hockey..occasionaly I play street hockey with my litte bro whenever I get the chance..

How did you get over the obsession?  Did your team start to lose? ???  You don't think sports are good for your health?  I see it as a fun way to do exercises.  Doing 100 pushups, running a few laps, doing a bunch of situps, gets to be boring after a while.  But when you can combine exercises into something that's fun and challenging to do, then I think that could be very healthy.  Although I'm not sure what the British do, given that all their sports are boring, well except for "SOCCER". ;)  Isn't the world cup coming up?
slm

How did you get over the obsession?  Did your peam start to lose? ???
Many factors:
-The Vancouver Canucks started losing..they weren't even making the playoffs
-They started trading off many of my Fav players.
-My fav player was on a scoring slump. Was also out for two consecutive seasons due to injury.
-Playoffs and Stanley cup finals were no longer exciting..No Canadian teams. Dominated by American teams.
-Defensive style of play dominated.. which made the game tedious. Extremely boring to watch.

Then there were personal reasons:
-School marks were going down.
-During the playoffs I refused to go anywhere or do anything with family or friends. That ticked them off..and rightly so..
-And last but not least, there were Islamic reasons. I started questioning if this was all right Islamically.

Yeah so all these factors gradually made me get over my obsession.
You don't think sports are good for your health?
No sports are good.. in moderation. It's just when things are taken to extremes, like in my case, it is not good.

Whether playing sports or just following national sports one shouldn't take the game too seriously.
Isn't the world cup coming up?
Yup. The last World Cup I had predicted that France would win and I was right..^_^. Is Greece hosting it this year? Or are they hosting the next Summer Olympics? Can't remember..
