One out of Three People on Earth are Muslim

         AsalamAlay.com,
Peace and e-Greetings be Upon YOu,

In September 1991, on the ABC News TV show NightLine
with Ted Koppel, They aired an interview with the
recently-Former deputy director of the CIA.

         Ted Koppel Asked,
'How many Muslims are there in the World?'

The Former CIA Deputy Director answered Quote:

"By Muslim [Research] One out of Five people in the
World are Muslim. By CIA-US Government research,
Out of THREE people [on Earth] are Muslim..."

         ...and that was 1991...!

So me and My Dad went about a quick research project,
remember, this was before any large databases were
         available online anywhere.

and YEP, we were able to find out that 1.7 Billion
Muslims were out there...and as a happenstance
         byproduct of our research,

We also counted 100 MILLION Jews scattered across the
         world in their still diaspora.

That is EIGHT TIMES more than Popular belief held.
We always heard that the Jews in the world were few
         like 10 or 12 million.

If only 10 or 12 million Jews existed, what could
explain their participation and influence in world
         affairs way beyond they numbers? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Answer: The numbers were wrong. There are Almost as many
Jews in the World as say as many Japanese for instance.

2 % of the World are Pakistanis.

2 % of the World is Italian.

yeah but Jews are unified under a common cause (Israel) and Muslims are divided on too many things to count!  Just a few would be: nationalism, tribalism, racism..etc etc...:(

chinah has got about 300 million people who call them selves muslim, but due to hundreds of years of persecution very few of them can really be called muslim. Example: one of the places where persecution has been going on the longest is suoth eastern china. A women was asked asked about pork, she said we cant give pork as a offering to our ancesters because they have asked us not to, and when we go to the temple we have to wash our mouths out with tea to get the pork out.
due to complete and utter ignorence about even the fundamenals of islam a large proportan of the 300 million can be better discribed as the decendents of muslims then muslims.
this goes for all over the world, if you count all the people who call them selves muslims, you'd get a figure about 2 billion.

Your right bro Jehad, China has a a problem with muslims, did you know that they are trying to extinguish Muslims over there. The Govt has set up CCTV's near mosques so they know who's coming and going. I also read in the Independant that there are some muslims over there who want a separate state i.e. a muslim state.

Sadly, if you look around the world there are many muslims, but one things we haven't got is the common sense of Islam, which means working together for the greater good for Allah. We are too concerned about whether one is a Pakistani, or Arab or whether one has dark skin or white skin and our nationalism will be the downfall for us. I see this very soon to happen.

asalm walakum, the Muslims who want to break away are in Chinese turkishtan. they are not Chinese. turkistan used to be a massive Muslim country that was divided up between Russia and china. turkishtan has not been ruled by china for very long so the Muslims there are generally more Islamic then in other parts of china, the video cameras you mentioned are probably in turkishtan as that is the only part of china where salat is tolerated. the musjids in all the other parts of china have been closed down ever since the communists took over. there are a few musjids remaining out side of turkistan, but they are used more as historic buildings then places of salat. people in china are coming back to Islam, but the word community will not let it happen, because if all of the 300 million Muslims in china wake up and remember what it means to be Muslim, this will effect the world.

se7en, that URL contains very old information.  Even the "important notes" section, which says the current population is around 1.2 billion, is very old.

I'd say that the more correct figure is 1.7 billion.  But just to be safe, I'd put 1.5 billion on that letter dhikr.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,
due to complete and utter ignorence about even the fundamenals of islam a large proportan of the 300 million can be better discribed as the decendents of muslims then muslims.
I saw a documentary on Islam in China recently (on the educational access channel, whatever that is) and it showed a lot of madrasa's that are opening in China for Muslims... they went into one sisters boarding-school type madrasa, where the students have been learning for years, and they showed all these awesome looking chinese hijabi sisters with the beautiful eyes... it was so cool to hear them speak chinese with "inshaAllah" and "mashaAllah" thrown in... and the narrator talked about how these brothers and sisters get degrees in islamic studies, tafseer etc and then go out and become imams and advisors in their communities...they showed the graduation ceremony and how these people are honored by their families... they showed beautiful masajid with the characterestic oriental architecture but with a dome... and Muslim martial arts as well.. pretty cool stuff, I wish I taped it :)

then, on this other show I saw on China (lonely planet, awesome show btw) the traveler went into a Muslim-run marketplace, and talked about how travelers and foreigners don't have to worry because the Muslims here are known for their reputation of honesty and would never cheat you...

subhanAllah so I think they are a thriving community who are struggling to gain more knowledge about Islam... it's unfortunate that overtime and due to political oppression that a lot of their Islam had been diluted.. but I think that they are struggling to return to Islam in it's true form and it seems like they have been fairly successful and inshaAllah they will become more successful..

who knows, the next bukhari may be from near the yangtze :)

wasalaamu alaykum.

        Chinese Muslims Rediscovering Islam
Ayub Khan reports on a surge of interest in Islamic and Arabic studies among China's 20 million Muslims.
April 2, 2001

Even though repression continues, economic reforms and the relative easing of draconian Chinese laws have brought hope to the community. Seizing the opportunity, Chinese Muslims, and more especially the young, have shown a growing interest in becoming proficient in Islamic and Arabic studies.

Over 23,000 Muslims are enrolled in China's ten leading Islamic institutes and mosques according to Ma Yunfu, vice-president of the Islamic Association of China.

Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, which has the distinction of being the home to the largest Muslim community in China, now has 3000 students training to be imams. Another 5,000 Manla, or young Islamic disciples, are studying Arabic and Islamic doctrine part time.

In addition, the Nigxia Economic Institute, located in the provincial capital of Nigxia, is now offering 3-4 year Arabic courses and special training classes. Nigxia University also opened an Arabic language department this year.

Ningxia has 1.78 million Muslims, making up one third of the province's total population. Several private schools teaching Islamic doctrine and Arabic language have also sprouted throughout China's western provinces.

Tian Xiping, a young Muslim from Tongxin County, the largest Muslim community in Ninxia told the People's Daily newspaper that, "systematic study of Arabic enables me to have a good command of Islam[ic] instructions and religious terms. I plan to advance my study abroad after graduation from the Ningxia Islamic Institute. "

Ma Jing, a female student, also from Tongxin county, who attends an Arabic school said, "I'd like to learn Arabic and expect to become an Arabic translator in future. As an Islamic intellectual, it is a must to study religious theory as well as commanding professional skills."

Over 300 students have graduated so far from Ma Jing's school and more than 20 have continued their higher studies in the Sudan, Yemen, Kuwait, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Southwestern Yunan Province, with a total Muslim population of 600,000 belonging to Hui ethnic group, has also seen a surge in youngsters' enthusiasm to learn Islamic studies and Arabic. Most of its 800 mosques now have attached Arabic schools catering to the growing interests of thousands of students.

Ma Zeiqu, a 16-year-old female student in Juminc Village religiously attends her Arabic classes at a neighboring mosque. Such is her enthusiasm that she has never missed a single class despite heavy rains and snow.

Economic reforms in China have also led to increased trade with the Middle East, sparking an enormous demand for translators proficient in the Arabic language.

According to An Chunren, dean of the Foreign Language Department under the Ningxia University, "There is an urgent need to train a huge number of professionals in the fields of trade, foreign affairs, tourism and enterprise management along with increasing economic and trade contacts with Arab countries."

According to official data, China has 20 million Muslims. Most of them are concentrated in Xinjiang, Ningxia, Gansu, and Qinghai regions and provinces. Smaller Muslim communities can also be found throughout interior China.

Islam came to China via Muslim businessman during the Tang Dynasty. There have also been reports of companions of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) coming to China.

         InshAllah,

I look forward to opening up my Fortune Cookie
after eating my Iftar after breaking my Fast and
reading a Hadith in Arabic with Chinese Translation.

Moscow courts its million Muslims

Prayers in the snow: Muscovite Muslims celebrate Eid

Moscow Mayor Yuriy Luzhkov attended a service at the city's main mosque to mark Eid al-Adha, the Muslim feast of sacrifice, on Monday and promised to help provide more facilities for Moscow's million-strong Muslims.
He urged Muscovites to embrace religious tolerance, a theme taken up in a message to Muslims by President Vladimir Putin, who spoke of "respect among all the peoples of multi-national Russia".

Mayor Luzhkov (left) has ground to make up with Muslims

This is only the second year that Russian leaders have taken the trouble to greet the Muslim community on their feast day, and some commentators see the attention as being an attempt to win support for the war against the Muslim Chechens.

Certainly, the leadership of Russia's Muslims has been careful not to side with the Chechens.

Supreme Mufti Talgat Tajuddin told worshippers in the Tatar city of Ufa that the war was a "necessary measure against terrorists rather than brothers-in-faith".

The second most senior cleric, Moscow-based Ravil Gaynutdin, opened the country's first Islamic university in Tatarstan last September to prepare clerics, and was at pains to say it would "protect the country from foreign extremist teachings".

The country's most prominent Muslim MP, Abdul-Vakhid Niyazov of the Refakh (Welfare) movement, sits in the pro-Putin Unity bloc in parliament.

Subservient congregation

There is, however, disillusion among many young Muslims at the political subservience and local complacency of their religious and community leaders, which has fed into Russians' traditional distrust of Islam to produce some ugly anti-Muslim acts.

High birth rates have increased the proportion of Muslims

Ironically, Moscow's Muslims have long complained about the tone of Mayor Luzhkov's campaign against unregistered market traders, most of whom are Muslims from the Caucasus.

Combined with antagonism stirred up by the Chechen war and alleged terrorist attacks on Russian civilians, this has led to an atmosphere of police intimidation and public suspicion against Muslims or people who simply "look Muslim".

Doubts and divisions

The Muslims of Russia number about 20 million, or 15% of the population. Perhaps four to five million of these are practising Muslims, although their higher birth-rate and increasing cultural and religious self-confidence mean that Muslims are likely to increase both in absolute numbers and in their proportion of the population.

In terms of political orientation, they have tended to vote for the Communist Party, as the bastion of conservatism and regional elites, although nationalist and pro-Islamic parties are gaining popularity in Tatarstan and the northern Caucasus.

Muslims have a grim reputation in Russia

The Muslims of the industrialised Volga - mainly the Tatars, Bashkirs and Chuvash - see Islam as a badge of national self-confidence and the role of their regional leaders as power-brokers.

They traditionally supply the elite of the Muslim community, such as Tajuddin and Gaynutdin.

The Muslims of the northern Caucasus - Chechens, Circassians and Dagestanis, among others - often feel like poor relations. They were absorbed into Russia much later, live in poor mountain areas, and have suffered most from their community's grim reputation among Russians.

This reputation has been fed by media stereotyping and the growth of Sharia law and militant sects - such as the pro-Saudi Wahhabis - in the Caucasus.

Russia's leaders may have decided the time has come to court the growing Muslim constituency before its loyal, Tatar leadership gives way to more militant trends that seek guidance from abroad.

Asalm walakum, there are a lot of muslims in russia, in mosco alone there is 1000 000 and some other parts are all muslim. the russian propaganda has effect,a lot of the russian muslims i have spoke to believe in those lies. the muslims from chechnia seem to know the facts. the problem is with Government scholers, they brain wash people to think that kaffar are closer to them then their brothers.
same story as india and kasmir. In russia most muslims are sufi, so the government scholers say the mujahideen are wahabi and we should help the russians kill them. the indian government scholers use same line against the mujahideen there.

        AsalamAlay.com,
Peace and e-Greetings be upon you,

I remember my dad telling me about how one day
one of his fellow co-workers, a Chinese Muslim
came back from Lunch break into the office and
had with him all sorts of pots and pans still
wrapped in the see through plastic.

My Dad asked him what they all were for?

He answered that his Parents were visiting from
China in a few days and since they were strict
Muslims, 'They wouldn't eat food cooked in
pots and pans that were already used for cooking
because they didn't know whether the food already
cooked before was halal or not.'

        Imagine that!

They would only ever eat FROM pots and pans that
had ONLY ever been used to cook HALAL food.

He hadda show his parents that the kitchenware was
still new and wrapped in the original plastic/box
or they wouldn't eat at his home.

        Bon Appetite,

from an email I received:
Lest our increasing numbers deceive us, I thought it was useful to
remind ourselves of an important principle regarding numbers that
Allah spoke about in the Qur'an:

"...and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but
it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with
[i.e. in spite of] its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.  Then
Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the
believers and sent down soldiers [i.e. angels] whom you did not see
and punished those who disbelieved.  And that is the recompense of
the disbelievers.  Then Allah will accept repentance after that for
whom He wills; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." [At-Taubah (9):
