[slm],

Finally its out in the open. I think they are right to have been sued since they did not explicitly mention beef in their fries thereby misleading the public. Anyways this should remove all doubt from our minds. Check this out:

I have read the attached message.

As a former manager for a McDonalds I have some things to add. I know for a fact that the oil used in the restraunts is 100% vegatable oil. But... what many dont say is what is done to the fries prior to them being taken to the store.

At the plant where the potatoes are processed they are pre-cooked. In 100% beef fat! That is right.... they are pre-cooked in the one thing that they say is not in there. There is a lot of cover up in the McDonalds industry, the fries are just the tip of the perverbial iceberg. Take it from me, a FORMER McDonalds manager.

Sincerely
Usamah

Asalamu Alaikum Brothers and Sisters,

What can I tell you.... *chuckles* McDonalds is as kufar as any other place. I would not trust the fish sandwiches to save my life.  Here is my reason.  McDonalds does a lot of business with bacon and sausage, these products are placed on the sandwiches using a set of tongs. The same tongs that they use for the fish! So when you are eating a fish sandwich, you might be injesting the grease and drippings from the sausage and bacon that was just put on the sandwich made before yours.

Either that, or the young person making the sandwiches might use their hands to put the bacon on a sandwich, and then start making yours without washing. Trust me, it happens a lot. Before I reverted to Islam I know that I did that very thing a lot. There is no rule in McDonalds about using your hands to put bacon on a sandwich and then washing before continuing to make other sandwiches.

Your best bet..... dont eat at McDonalds at all! I could not get out of there fast enough after I took Shahada. My eyes were opened to the horrible things that happen there. I hope that this gives you a little insight as to what really goes on there. I dont know anything about Burger King, but I do know that they use a lot of bacon, so the same things are probably going on there.... be safe... dont go.

Sincerely
Usamah

"McDonald's gets fried" (but no beef extract the UK)

by Fareena Alam <fareena_alam@yahoo.com>

Q News, The Muslim magazine
Issue 332, June 2001 (Re-published on ININ with prior permission from the
author)

International fast food giant McDonald's USA has been hit with a lawsuit
after investigations have revealed its french fries are laced with beef
extract. Seattle-based lawyer Harish Bharti has accused the franchise of
deceiving consumers with the claim that the fries are prepared in 100%
vegetable oil. Investigations have revealed that the fries are prepared
with a natural flavouring that includes beef extract.

As news of Mr Bharti's lawsuit spread, he received hundreds of calls from
vegetarians and Muslims. Some of them, he said, say they were told by
McDonald's employees that the fries were vegetarian.

Company spokesperson Walt Riker denies McDonald's ever said the fries are
suitable for vegetarians and claims, "We have always told customers that
their flavour comes partly from beef." The company's website and its
'nutritional facts' brochures state the French fries are made of potatoes,
soybean oil and "natural flavours". For a breakdown of what constitutes
"natural flavours" one would have to contact a McDonald's
customer-satisfaction officer.

Bharti argues, "A reasonable person who heard that McDonald's fries are
prepared in '100% vegetable oil' and read the list of ingredients would
assume the food is suitable for vegetarians."

The lawyer's suit is seeking unspecified damages for the "emotional
distress" caused to vegetarians, some of them vegetarian for religious
reasons. Many Muslims across the United States were also dealt with a shock
that what they assumed was halal due to lack of 'animal-derived
ingredients', is in fact not.

Summayya Whiteman, a home-maker in Washington DC said, "I have always
avoided the hamburgers and the chicken McNuggets because they are made from
non-halal meat. But I thought the fries were just potatoes, oil and salt."

News of this controversy quickly spread to the United Kingdom predominantly
via e-mails from Muslims in the United States stating that McDonald's
French fries are not halal. However, McDonald's UK has confirmed, "In the
UK, we do not add any flavourings to our French Fries at any stage. They
are 100% potato, cooked in 100% vegetable oil. The only thing we do add is
a little salt prior to serving," said the press release. Similarly in
countries like India, beef extract is not used to flavour McDonald's French
fries as a large majority are vegetarian for religious reasons.

However, British Muslims whom Q News spoke to dismissed the idea that
McDonald's has become "any less detestable than it was before" despite
having been cleared of this controversy involving non-halal beef extract.

"Read 'Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal' and you
will never want to step into a fast-food restaurant like McDonald's again,
" say Saleem Ruper, a 25 year-old computer engineer in London. The
best-selling book by Eric Schlosser has turned millions off fast food
through detailed accounts of their production. According to Schlosser,
hamburger patties are nothing less than chemically enhanced beef made from
the meat of more than 100 different cows that is probably contaminated with
E-coli bacteria and almost certainly faeces of some sort. He adds that the
soft drinks contain over 60 artificial colours and flavours and the chicken
only smells like it has been hear a barbecue because it's been doused in
smoke flavoured "aroma chemicals".

There are stories of dairy cows and poultry living in horrendous conditions
such as battery cages, and later slaughtered mechanically in factories
where animal cruelty is the last thing on workers' minds.

Another young Muslim adds, "McDonald's and other food chains like it base
their profits on cruel mass production of animals. How can it be halal for
Muslims to spend money on an industry that so severely violates the way
Islam teaches us to treat animals? To me, McDonald's will never be any less
sinister than a pair of golden arches in a pool of blood."

Al-Hafiz B.A. Masri, former Imam of the Shah Jehan mosque in Woking, wrote
in his book, Animals in Islam, "If animals have been subjected to cruelties
in their breeding, transport, slaughter, or in their general welfare, meat
from them is considered impure and unlawful to eat. The flesh of animals
killed by cruel methods (Al-Muthiah) is carrion (Al-Mujaththamah). Even if
these animals have been slaughtered in the strictest Islamic manner, if
cruelties were inflicted on them otherwise, their flesh is still forbidden
food. 'Oh, ye messengers! Eat of the good things (tayyibat) and do
righteous deeds. Surely, I know what you do." (Qur'an.23:51). The word
'Tayyib', translated as 'good', 'pure', 'wholesome', etc. means pure both
in the physical and the moral sense.

"Our Holy Prophets' overwhelming concern for animal rights and their
general welfare would certainly have condemned (La'ana) those who practice
such methods (factory farming), in the same way as he condemned similar
other cruelties in his days. He would have declared that there is no grace
or blessing (Barakah) - neither in the consumption of such food nor in the
profits from such trades."
