Absolute Rubbish !!!

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Only two words for this article: Go figure!!

May be those Porsche 911 owners will start eating their vegetables now ;-)

Veggie car takes a spin

The world's first sports car to run on rotting vegetables has been put through its paces.
It goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds and reaches a top speed of 130 miles per hour (209 kilometres per hour).

The car runs on gas given off by fermenting organic household waste, as one of its fuel supplies.

Tests have shown that 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of smelly rubbish will power the car for 100 km (62 miles).

The car, known as the Advantige R, has been developed by a Swiss manufacturer. It is being displayed at motor shows around the world.

Chief Executive Officer of Rinspeed, Frank Rinderknecht, said the model was a concept car "meant to give input for future technologies and possibilities".

One-off

The car runs on two sources of power. As well as conventional petrol, it uses kompagas, a renewable fuel source made from rotting greenery.

"Even sports cars can be environmentally friendly," Mr Rinderknecht told BBC News Online.

"Kompagas is made of natural waste, " he added. "As long as there's greenery, there's natural waste."

However, the car is not yet ready for mass production. There is only one in the world and it comes with a half-a-million-pound price tag.

Hmm.

If I had a time machine, went to the future, came back to the present, and then started thinking about something that happened in my trip to "the future" ...

would it be a flashback?

or a flashforward??

Okay I know this (surprise, surprise I know something about movies!). In back to the future the car had some sort of nuclear power that was ignited by electricity. And there was something to do with attaining a certain speed before that could happen.

Vegetable waste and other rubbish can provide significant power. However, there weight-to-energy ratio is very high often making vehicles powered by such fuel heavy and uneconomical. Petroleum is still too cheap stunting the development of any competitive fuel source.

A.W.W.

I don't know what all the fuss is about cars. Sooner or later the countryside will rule i.e. people will be on horse and carriage again. The good life. Oil is going to last another 20 years or so and the alternatives are too risky and costly. Bring on my rocking horse, All I need know is my Yankee doodle cowboy hat to go with my country living. :)

Br Asim any idea why it has to be "smelly rubbish"???

On a serious note though, isn't there supposed to be a time when energy will become cheap and there will be much wealth in the world? How does that reconcile with our dwindling fossil fuel resources? My brother always says nuclear fission will be discovered just in time. Allah knows best.

I see some people stay all the way to the end ;)

Rubbish by definition is smelly! The author is just being verbose :)
On a serious note though, isn't there supposed to be a time when energy will become cheap and there will be much wealth in the world?
Hmm, whose prediction is that? I feel energy is cheap these days and would get expensive as time goes by. Fossil fuel researves are dwindling especially in the middle east. Interesting the US has enormous untapped reserves that it has not developed. Yet it is relying heavily on cheap crude from the Muslim countries. I have read estimates saying that crude will become extinct or extremely expensive in 50-100 years. Can you imagine a world without the internal combustion engine? Man, everything today is power by fossil fuel and if this dries up how would our developed environment as we know it today change? Cars, planes, electricity, etc?
nuclear fission will be discovered just in time.
You mean nuclear fusion? Nuclear fission is already a reality in power plants, etc. I feel fission has unfairly gotten a bad reputation. True, radiation is a problem but reliability has increased and new approaches for disposing spent nuclear waste are available. Nuclear fusion, on the other hand, does not produce any radioactive waste. But fusion has only been demonstrated in controlled laboratory experiments. The reaction is too expensive and difficult to control for practical energy generation.

Wasalaam.

The following is in respect of there being much wealth in the world:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him) as saying:
The Last Hour will not come before wealth becomes abundant and overflowing, so much so that a man takes Zakat out of his property and cannot find anyone to accept it from him and till the land of Arabia becomes meadows and rivers. [Muslim]

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
The Last Hour will not come till wealth is abundant and overflowing, so much so that the owner of the property will think as to who will accept Sadaqa from him, and a person would be called to accept Sadaqa and he would say: I do not need it.[Muslim]

As for the prediction of energy being cheap in the future, its merely that, just a theory. I think it equates abundant wealth with cheap energy which may or may not be correct.
You mean nuclear fusion?
Oops yes that's what I meant !! *red face* [Note: Where's the red face smiley?]
Nuclear fusion, on the other hand, does not produce any radioactive waste. But fusion has only been demonstrated in controlled laboratory experiments. The reaction is too expensive and difficult to control for practical energy generation.
Being a non scientist I wonder if in the future the nuclear fusion reaction will be able to be done at more controllable temperatures thereby leading to a cheaper and a more extensive source of energy?

As a last point though, I'd just want to stress that there is a danger in speculating over these issues too much. Sure its intriguing to imagine what will happen in the years down the line but ultimately we should accept what our Prophet [saw] has explained to us and busy ourselves with improving our own condition today instead of worrying about things which may not be within our control.

As always Allah knows best

This reminds me of my Economics class during my 'A' levels.

The theme/ value hold by economists is that man has unlimited ones, and the world has limited resources....

But they forgot that it is man, who has limited wants... whereas the resources are unlimited. Our mind is finite, but Allah's boundaries are not.
we should accept what our Prophet  has explained to us and busy ourselves with improving our own condition today instead of worrying about things which may not be within our control.
Agree, akhi... let us concentrate on our sphere of influence, rather than our sphere of concerns (courtesy of Steven Covey... I think that's what he said)

Allah knows best, indeed...

wassalam :-)
