[slm] The (real) answers: Phraseology: 1. That's dope - Great, awesome, wonderful, perfect, cool, attractive, nice. You aced your test. That's dope! 2. kickin' it - To relax; to sit around and do nothing; to relax with friends. We were kickin' it at Starbucks today. 3. I'm gonna bounce - I'm gonna leave, get up, break to (another slang). 4. back down - To surrender, to give up, to let go. "Like Bilal the companion, when the time came around; he never feared no one, no he never backed down (MYNA Raps IV - "I Only Fear Allah" ). 5. back up - Move back, step back. 6. dig it - A command to understand or pay attention. 7. pass the bone - To share your knowledge and experience; to drop knowledge (another slang). 8. I'm down with that - an expression to show you are sympathetic to or in agreement with something, or that you are friends with someone. 9. come correct - To represent the real, to do something the way it should be done. 10. fixin' to - about to, in the process of doing something. I'm fixin' to go to the library. Terms: 11. crib - home 12. trip - This has many meanings. Here's some of them: Something that is unusual or strange; to overreact or act out of character; to get upset; to act in disagreement; to be overwhelmed; to be not making sense; to act crazy or surprised, etc. 13. grub - n. food; v. to eat 14. jive - Words; jokes; language. Man, all this ghetto jive makes no sense to me 15. crump - Very good, attractive, nice; phat (another slang); hype (another slang). 16. hoopster - a basketball player with a sound reputation. 17. def - Really good; the bomb (another slang) 18. original - the first to establish an idea or a group (this was a repeat from Slang 101!) 19. mad - very, extremely; a large quantity. "Shagufta, Danish" - those are two mad desi names! 20. thang - thing, way of doing things. Do your own thang, meaning "do it your own way." Basketball terminology: 21. burned - played great offense on someone. He burned him 22. picked him clean - stole the ball away from him without committing a foul 23. take it to the hole - to drive the ball towards the basket 24. i got it - I got fouled 25. brick - a shot which badly misses the mark (not necessarily an "air ball" ) 26. charity line - the free throw line 27. rock - the basketball 28. take him to school - play great offense on him 29. swing it - pass the ball around 30. ill wit da pill - literally: really good with the basketball; refers to someone who has exceptional talent with handling the basketball BONUS: word - Exclamation or term of endearment. word up? - How is everything going? What's up? (another slang) old skool - anything which is roughly five years old or more; the opposite of 'hip' (another slang) ragged - to be teased, put down or criticized. If you don't wanna be ragged for bein' old skool, you better get yourself with the latest jive on the street. rents - parents Some comments: None of this is old skool (se7en) or played out (princess) - except, maybe, "charity line" :) At least not in college over here. Laboogie, Rashid - y'all are da bomb guys. Way to go. Bhaloo - nice try. Some pointers for you son: "I got it" is not "I'm going to take care of it." That would be "I got him" or "I got ball." "Brick" is not necessarily an "air ball." The ball may hit the corner of the backboard, or the top of it, and be called a brick. But it would not be called an air ball. Jannah - you disppoint me! Se7en - I thought this was classic:
back up - get outta my face
:) Your 'old skool' comment ... sis, you're trippin' ... just cuz you don't understand the terminology doesn't make it old skool :) princess - et tu? :) Aiite. Hope you fellas enjoyed it :) Wassalamu alaikum. |

[slm] Let me clear my throat****aight**lets do this
(why do we feel the need to identify with african americans is all i wanna know)
I personally identify w/african americans b/c thats what I grew up around and being latina and all, your basically put in the same category...minority...on another note, slang is not a african american thing, it is a language that is developed within the ghettos and/or non-ghettos (dont want to offend anyone) by the people who live there...e.g.Spanlish is spoken by Spanish & English speakers, who have mix the two languages creating a new one "Spanlish" (Rashid, help a sista out)e.g. ?oye, bro when we going to your casa? Hermano Rashid you can finish the explanation, thanks bro :)
b]DON'T hate the "dirty south" and it's NOT dirty..i live here! u wanna talk about gunda..don't get me started up on albany don't hate..participate later langur ;-D
nah, Princesa (spanish 4 princess) the south is beaaaaaaaaatiful...coming from NYC, I know what DIRTY looks like BUT the south, meaning...D.C., atlanta, florida, Balitmore, virginia and other areas...tend to be called the "DIRTY SOUTH" b/c of the music they listen to and the way they dance......Rashid please elaborate, thanks bro. (plus I dont know much about Texas, just that the current president comes from there,{no comment})
Once again I must come through with the correct verbals
I gotta give a shout out to my boy Rashid for holding it down, whaattttttttttttt up sssssssssssssson? ;-D |

[slm] Sr Laboogie pretty much summed up the spanglish/slang thing. A lot of these slang words come from the inner-city and then through the popularity of hip hop they're worldwide now. Spanglish is just taking an english word and rendering into spanish, for example "parking" becomes "parkeo" and "munching" becomes "munchear" and also mixing up words like laboogie mentioned. "Dirty South" is a phrase that started out in Atlanta, to describe the area. Cow-town mafia vs. Texans? Somebody's gonna wake up next to a horse's head ;-) [wlm] |

[slm] I have an unfair advantage here, I've lived in the city my whole life and been into hip hop since the mid-80's. *skrilla- finances *wall out- act in a deranged manner *homes- short for "homeboy" *foul- disagreeable, disgusting *scrub- a broke individual, one with no skrilla, but acts like he does *pigeon- a materialistic female, golddigger *shawty- a regular female *playa- one who is popular with the ladies *hustla- one who is out on the streets surviving any way he can. I just have to add, I know this thread is all in good fun and all, but when people talk like this 24/7 then it gives the impression that they're hoodlums or something. Some of these terms have negative meanings and we as Muslims shouldn't use them when talking about others (scrub, pigeon, playa, bumpin n grindin, etc). A sister mentioned how her brother talks like this all the time, remember moderation is the key. Sorry if I offended anyone, we just have to be careful not to let it get out of hand. |

Assalaamu alaikum, Gotta concur with Rashid's sentiments and Jannah's observations that his explanations were much funnier than the slangs themselves...having been brought up in the 80's/at one pt waayy too into hip hop back in the day (astaghfirAllah), I have to admit I was on the floor for a good while. Another slang item I had picked up from a 3 year old is "chumpy". I dunno why, but there are just some things you can't get rid of in your vocab! |

The thing is, when I'm speaking to brothers who speak in this manner, I always end up nodding stupidly, maybe I will print out that list and use it as a dictionary when those brothers are speaking.
