TUE MAY 08 2001 12:05 P.M. G.M.T. Sudan angry over US religious freedoms report KHARTOUM, May 8 (AFP) - Sudan's ruling National Congress (NC) party has bitterly criticised a US report on the freedom of belief in Sudan describing it as part of a hostile US policy against Sudan, a press report said Tuesday. According to Al-Sahafa daily, NC Secretary General Ibrahim Ahmed Omar said the document, which is reported to have urged the US administration to take a hardline against Khartoum for alleged repression of the freedom of belief, was a result of a recent eviction of the US from the UN Human Rights Commission. "It reflects the antagonistic policies by Washington against Khartoum," Omar said of the report by a US international religious freedoms committee. US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice on Sunday said the ejection of the United States from the UN commission and the simultaneous election of Sudan to the panel were "an outrage." The Sudanese paper said the US report accused Khartoum of continuing to shell civilian targets in the south, practising slavery and confiscating foreign humanitarian aid in addition to carrying out religious persecution. Omar said the government and the NC reject those accusations, warning: "We do not fear the American threats and will defend our country's sovereignty and will not succumb to such threats." US President George W. Bush declared Sudan "a disaster area for all human rights" in a speech earlier this month. Copyright (c) 2001, AFP www.iviews.com |

[/quote] assalaamu alaikum How ironic that he slanders Sudan like this, when in the past week the US has been voted OFF the "United Nations human rights council" & just yesterday also the "International Narcotics Control Board." http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/americas/newsid_1318000/1318503.stm |
