what happenned?

Assalam alaykum

[not meant to offend anyone]

What happened to the board lately? It used to be somewhere muslims and
non-muslims could turn to for answers to their many questions. And now, it seems like
most of it is idle chit-chat. (some that doesn't even make sense, or borderlines
on insults) What happened to all of the old regulars? They hardly post
anymore??? It's very disheartening to see how this message board is going. I think that
it's the best board on the web for muslims. The administrators have done a
great job. But my addiction is fading :( Anybody else feel this way???

wlm,

latley there has been an explosion of population in the madina.. not sure why. but with that comes alot more postings. i think that the board goes up and down in stages or like waves.. (sin cosin).. sometimes we get into alot of good discussions..then we go back down and loosen up a bit..then more good stuff...i don't think it's necessarily bad to talk about non-heavy-serious-islamic discussion type stuff.. that is part of our getting to know each other and bonding as brothers and sisters too.

however you do make a good point, we should all watch what we post.. if we are constantly posting one or two words or sentences we should stop and think about it first!!! maybe we should limit everyone to 5 posts a day :)

A.W.W.

5 posts a day....??? Jannah your just feeding the adiction more and more, the adiction has no cure. Population is at 312 growing each day, I don't know your web stats but say an average of 70 people posted 5 a day that would be 350 new posts. Hmm ...

Personally speaking I think this board is one of the better ones, I've been on some boards where the talk is heavy on politics, fatwas, jihad and bashing each other on cults and sects. This board seems more like where everyone is a bit mature, has a few close friends and is kept alive by posting interesting articles that cover, humour, personal hardships, struggles of daily life and above all a place where people come to perhaps relax or wind down for a bit before they move on.

Of course it can be improved but I for one like it as it is.

I think a little over 200 people were deleted from the board since it has gone up (no they weren't layed off ;) ) its just that they didn't respond to the registration message or ever posted.  Sister Jannah did a good job of explaining what is happening and I agree with that assessment.

And yes, we are always looking for ways to improve the board, so if you have any ideas or concerns please let us know, and we'll see if we can insha'Allah improve things.  :)

slm,

ay sr jannah.. just a thought.. if in the future this site gets to be too high traffic for the server its on, maybe you could find some sponsorers to help sup[port a dedicated server for the site ??? it may have some downsides to it, but if the growth continues (and mashallah thats a good thing :) ) then somethins gonna have to be done abotu the traffic and disk space.

just a though :)

uh isnet went down because there was a lack of funds. as for a dedicated server that's something to look into in the future inshaAllah

although i agree that this board is great,

i also think it's sliding a bit

before i started posting i read carefully for a while and the face is shiting slightly (the whiole wave effect)

i honestly do feel that sometimes idle chit-chat does tak ethe best of a post

i wish there was more debate (mediated of course)and less one word -smiley face replies SOMETIMES.

Then again, fun is fun

I think Madrasatul Ilm is kinda shifting from what i saw it as, Insha'Allah it will go back up.

that's positive, constructive criticism, it's evryone's board right? i might be flawed in my evaluation

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

Been kind of busy of late so I'm just going to post and run. ;-)

I think we have to understand that we all come to the board for differing reasons. Some of us come to learn, some of us come to chill out, some of us want to spread some beneficial knowledge we've picked up, some of us want to share experiences with others, some of us want to inform others of activities taking place, some of us wish to share our onion stories, may be some come for all of the above and the list could go on and on and on.

Now it may well happen that these will result in differing types of posts reflecting why people visit the Madina.

Question: Is that necessarily a bad thing?

As I've said before I think there needs to be a balance when posting, to the tune where you can find that happy medium whereby you're contributing but not merely posting for posting's sake. (Not always easy to do when you're an addict mind ;-) )

My own opinion since being here is that the balance between discussions and more light hearted threads vary and fluctuate as Sr Jannah said. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable to have a discussion just for the sake of having one.

The beauty of this board, in my view, is that topics are spontaneous: a brother has experienced something at school and wasn't sure how to deal with it or a new muslim isn't sure what Islam says on this issue etc

By all means, if the moderators feel things are getting out of hand then impose some agreed limit. I'd like to think, though, that we would be aware of our own selves and actions such that no posting restriction would be needed.

I think we all have our views of how we would like the Madina to be if we had the our own choice but if that preference leads to the exclusion of others, is that what we really want and is that what it means to have a community?

Just a few of my thoughts and go figure others have thoughts too ;-)

Wasalaam

Asalamu aleikom, I think this message board is very good and
informative but don´t you think to open new thread-Family circle- where people can put
questions and ideas about the family issues and upbringing of our
children, insha Allah. Thanks for reading. Salaamu aleikom!

[slm] one thign i have to comment on is how lately there have been alotta "foreign" language conversations, ex. all the urdu comments and all, i mean urdu is a beautiful language and all, but its kinda rude sometimes how non-urdu speakign ppl are left out.

another thing is ive noticed that lately alotta ppl are dissing other ppl. i mean its one thing if u know the person ur dissing very well, but if u dont, then its not appropriate. i do know that some ppl get offended and all, but i dunno, maybe im just assuming things or something.
and i must agree that the 1 line posts are...

assalamu alaikum wr wb

actually i couldnt get into this board all last week.. the more i tried this page it kept giving me an error.. i thought it was gone like ISNET was gone.. :(     then i just saw up again a few days ago and was like WOW!  masha Allah.

anyways speaking of ISNET, i still have ppl emailing me asking me when its going to be back up and im like ISNET WHO?  ISNET WHAT?!   its been 3-4 yrs already and not coming back up, though the indonesia one is still running as far as i know but the english one is gone.   yup what jannah said lack of funds is one of the reasons it went away.

we asked for 2 years to members to pay at least 1 or 2 dollars each.  We had approx about 500-1000 members.  If each regular user paid like 1-2 dollars we would have enough to actually keep the server up.  but no one wanted to pay, too cheap. :p :(
everyone wanted it to be free, and the bro that was running it was paying for it out of his own pocket and that wasn't right.  All the other administrators could give some money but it still wouldnt be enough and a lot of stuff was going on so it was decided to let it go.     i guess next time ppl are asked to contribute a bit to keep it up maybe they will listen next time cuz of what happened here.
a lot of ppl i know got real upset cuz they had a lot of important mail and etc.. but we did tell ppl it was going to go cuz of lack of funds... i think they thought we were suppose to just get the money from the growing money tree or something  because they just flooded the emails with I DEMAND YOU GET IT UP NOW!  and its like ok.i demand you dont email me this, its over.gone..khallas...
:)
*sigh*
i do see some emails coming to me from ppl from there and its like how are you?   and some emails are asking still when its coming back or if, and i think now they are willing to give some $$...but too late.
on another alternative.   There is a brother that has an islamic message board it also has a chat room.
http://www.netmuslims.com
http://www.netmuslims.com/chat
the chat room is like virtual reality, very cool.  not many users go there but unless its a scheduled announced chat then a lot of ppl will come at that time.  anyways a lot of old isneters go there sometimes...  ppl can go there if they want... :)

sorry jannah for talking too much..tend to do that when im nausea. :)
take care

what gets me mad is how the mailing list went down because somebody had a go at Tammer about Rutgers Uni or something and then my hotmail emails went overloaded with spam from some %%£££$" sending me garbage so i lost nearly everybodies email address

so basically for last year of uni since islamic society didn't exist at uni i was left with no real muslim friends

bad planning...whatever is Fareed upto now though?
