Am I turning into a bald slapheaded sister??
Anonymous

Salam all

I have been wearing a head scarf now for about a year and a half and since
wearing it I've notice my hair has become a lot thinner and falling out. My sister
said she had the same problem and I know a few others who have said the same. I
was wondering if anyone else was expricencing it and had any comments on why it
was happening and ways to prevent the hair from falling out further. E.g. Is it
because I wear my scarf too tight? Or am I not giving it enough sunlight etc. I
was just felt a bit low when my mother pointed ot to me how my hair had
dramatically thinned over the past year and she may joke by calling me baldy but it
can get a bit worrisome.

Thanks.
A balding sister.

wlm,

umm i don't think ur going bald :)  thinning hair is natural as you get older. if you feel it is to an extreme then you might want to see your doctor.. it could be caused by alot of things..like poor diet or weight loss. my hair was doing that a few years ago..then i realized it was probably due to the compound henna's and dyes i was putting in there for fun. after i stopped doing anything to it for 6 months it went back to normal! you can trim your hair to keep it healthier, use some oils and stuff, maybe if u think it's ur hijab style try something different which isn't too tight. i haven't seen any sister who's hair has been damaged by hijab?? actually all the hijabi's i know have absolutely beautiful hair.. cuz remember their hair is protected all the time from uv rays..sun damage, dryness and other stuff.

asalaam alaikum balding sis (hehe, sorry, couldnt resist) ;)

actually, i think it could be a combination of what lis and jannah said. my mom adorns hijab too, and her hair usually thins out cuz she doesnt dry it before tying it back in a ponytail and putting on her scarf. so her hair like lost its fluffiness and she had to start using conditioners and stuff to restore it. like jannah said, 4-6 months should fix it....

also, ive noticed this problem with girls who brush their hair a lot. even though its good to massage your scalp and stuff by brushing your hair thoroughly a few times a day, if overdone, it can lead to hair loss. so try to cut back on that and try tying your hair loosely too, as its easier for strands of hair to fall out after theyve been tugged hard out of the scalp.

hope this helps!

waslaam :)

wlm,

oh yeah one tip i heard about is not to tie your hair back when it is wet.. let it dry naturally then after that brush it and put it up or whatever... pulling your hair back or combing it while it is wet causes alot of breakage... or so i read :)

i don't have this problem now, but i did b4.
i realised that this wasnt coz of my hijab, but it was because i tied my hair really tightly!!!, but using oil in ur hair regularly helps!!!
It also may b that u don't leave ur hair down at home, coz leaving it up all the time can also cause it to fall, and u also tieing wet hair may cause hair loss!!!

I don't know how i found my way into this forum but i can't stop smiling from the above quote.  Balding can occur in women like it happens to men but is less common.

I want to digress slightly.  A colleague of mine sports dreadlocks (he is caucasian).  Now apparently to get the desired effect it means he can't wash his hair, or so i have been told.  Is this true ? (it would explain the smell !)
secondly, somebody told me if you leave your hair unwashed for long enough it will clean itself ? Is that a myth ??

ps Umar ibn al-Khattab was bald (radi allahu anhu) so sister you are in good company, ;-)

Ahhh thank guys. I'm 23 by the way so I'm hoping its not because I'm getting
old because by the time I turn 30 then I'll be completely bald!! I think it maybe
what one of the sis's meantiones. Henna. I did an experimentation on my hair
but I thought natural henna dye would not cause any damage to hair. I thought it
was only bleach products. Again it could also have something to do with the way
I tie my hair. How else can you STOP your hair falling our from under your
scarf and going wild without tieing your hair back tight and putting 100 pins in
it? I usually wear the tight part of the two piece scarf under my cloth scarf to
stop the hairs falling. But I think what you guys said about using oils and
regualr trimming might help. When you scarf you sometimes forget to take of your
hair - especially when in a rush in the mornings :)

Thanks for your tips guys!!

one last question what type of oil do you recommend? My dad suggested olive oil
or coconut oil (thats what he used to use when young!) but I thought that was
for cooking!

check this out:

* I wash my hair *everyday*
* I shampoo my hair *everyday*
* I tie my hair into a bun, while its wet, and put my hijab on, *everday*
*I just dyed my hair (like 5 mins ago)...for kicks.  I don't usually do this kind of thing, but in the past 2 weeks...this would be the 3rd time I did it.

What the crap is wrong with me!?  When will I learn??

Anyways, I went through a phase when some hair started falling out...I attributed it to weather (thats what the lady who cut my hair told me) and sure enough..when the seasons changed...so did the pesky hair problem!  :)

I won't say that I "hope this helps" because I didn't say anything even remotely helpful :) But I hope your hair stops falling out, Insha'Allah...because I know that gets annoying..

Assalamu alaikum balding sisters in Islam :)
The same thing happened to me last year.  It had been a while since I started wearing hijab, so that wasn't the problem.  part of the reason was very high stress.  Another part, I believe, was the water in the area I was living.  It was amazing, as soon as I moved,  both the stress and the water changed, and my hair's doing much better now!  I also started taking multivitamins which I think are very important for everything, not just for hair, and I cut my hair quite short so I wouldn't have to pull it back so tight all the time.  I think that over time pulling the hair back so much causes overall weakness after a while.
I hope that helps insha  Allah

i think it's great we're having a girly discussion in the akhwat cafe finally!!!  nazia you better chill on the dye it's a killer... and yeah i thought henna since it was natural would be good for my hair, but it dries hair all the same and drying makes hair more brittle and breakable... hmm i also read that you should wash your hair with lukewarm water but then rinse at the end with cold water... it makes hair shinier or something.. works for me!!

henna dries your hair out jannah? really, what do you mix in it? cuz it never does that to me.

for the balding sister, have you tried changing your diet? cuz that might be why your hair is falling out. if none of these ideas work ask a doctor.

slm,

Ok so now I know I an not alone :)

I was wondering why my hair was thinning and falling out also.  I thought it was my Kimar also.
By the way I still don't know but it looks like it has slowed down a tad.
my beautician said you should use different conditioners and shampoos since your hair becomes used to the same chemicals and loses its ability to benefit from whatever the product is.  They have a family business and all the sisters(family) including the mother have beautiful hair.  I figured she might actually know what she is talking about.  My hair does maintain that softness with the different conditioners.  she also said you should deep condition your hair at least once a week.

Well that is my contribution to this truly women's issue.  isn't that great.  I agree with you Jannah!  :)

Initially, henna ruins the protective covering on the hair (forget the name) that gives hair it's bounce, shininess, and softness.  You know, when you first take the henna out of your hair, you feel like you could just touch your hair and it will crack?  Well, that's why...the coating on your hair is stripped out by the henna BUT, really, henna is good for the hair in the long run.  Think about it, it takes out all the oils and residue that builds up--it's sord of like a vitamin for worn out hair.    I suggest that whenever someone uses henna, be really gentle with your hair for the first few days until the covering of the hair develops again.  ie. don't brush too much and aggressively, don't pull back hair too tight and don't use any chemicals and other stuff.

PLEASE-someone tell me about coconut oil. Is it true the wonderful things I hear it does for hair? Is it better than olive oil? And-where can I get it?  One thing's for sure-I've learned that you can't find it at a regular supermarket...

YIKES!  we're *not* supposed to pull back wet hair?  Do it every day but alhamdullillah, haven't noticed any significant hair loss...

Another thing...

A friend of mine was having this same problem and she actually consulted a "hair doctor"  Anyways, they told her that it could be the mercury in her cavity fillings.  Soo, if you've got mad cavities, then it might be a contributing factor.  (If that is the problem, you actually have to go to the dentist and get the fillings removed and have the non-mercury type put in--mucho mula involved!)

Have you tried rogaine? I read somewhere that it works best when you start in your twenties.

Anyhow..incase you all are wondering--the hair dye did nothing for me! :( i still look exactly the same.. I think the problem is that I keep going for the no ammonia brands (Clairol Natural Instincts)  I think next time im gonna go for the real thing!! hehe...Maybe Feria, by Loreal...because... I'm worth it!

hahahaha..jk.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I like the one about using luke warm water
followed by a cold rinse. The trouble is finding the time. I usually just blow dry
my hair (really hot so it dries quickly) maybe its better to let your hair dry
naturally.

Hard water can be a problem. I live in London and the water is terrible. My
friend a student from abroad came over here and within a few months her hair
became thinner. Diet - great idea too. I think I need more veggies and fruit in my
diet but I've started taking vitimins.

As for the stress - I cant stop being stressed while i've got my masters to
complete and a job and husband to find!! Ohh life!

I heard that henna was supposed to make hair stronger and softer not more dry?
I have bought so many new fangled hair products from the shops but now I think
they are a complete waste of money. They contain so many chemicals that
actually burn your hair - even some shampoos!!

I think I'll stick with natural hair products and use oils.

Black seed is supposed to be used to cure lots of illnesses isnt it?

Thanks.
The balding sis who is undergoing treatment.

From conclusion if we eat natural foods not processed, packaged etc,
if we have natural water not chlorined hard water, if we relax no stress etc
then we feel and look better all around.

This also applies to acne right? When I used to get a spot I used to use those
strong face creams. But I dont like them because they contain steroids which
put hairs on your face (why do you get hair in places you dont want and you dont
get haor in those places you do!). Has anyone got any 'NATUAL' spot remedies? I
heard that mixing fresh basil with hot water and applying it to the face is
very good. Does anyone know any others?

Well I mentioned coconut oil is what my parents used to use when they
were back in India. When I went there to visit cousins they use the oil as part
of their regular routine as people in the west use bottled conditioners. Some
of my aunts and cousins have hair as think as ropes! You could use their hair to
climb up a wall its so strong!

bald-sis.

My mum wanted to find hair coconut oil in London. There are a few Indian shops
around where I live and they actually import the stuff from India. Its not in
any designer bottle and it may look a strange colour but I think natural
products are better. If you have any areas where you live which have Indian
communities and shops I think you should try there. They have so many natural beauty
treatments and products like averdyic (which i have spelt wrong :)

I also heard that massaging the head is good for the hair!

I am now in shock over the henna powder. I'm throwing my box away!

Yes henna dries your hair, but not if you mix it with a no. of other things. Never use henna alone. There usually are a no. of ready made mixes available in the market (dunno about in the States coz I don't live there), but its usually easier to make it at home. Depending on the amount of mixture required, mix henna, egg, coffee powder/tea brew and lemon juice. If you only want to condition your hair then one hour of application is enuff, but if you want to give it that henna colour then leave on for two-three hours. In India, ppl prepare the henna mix and leave it overnight in an iron vessel. This sort of oxidizes it and it becomes really black. They also add shikakai and amla powders ( I have no idea what these are called in english, but maybe they're available in some indian stores?). The best way to apply henna is to do so on clean unoiled hair, leave on till it dries a bit and then cover it with a shower cap (so that it doesn't dry through), wash off with plain water (no shampoo). After air drying the hair, gently massage in some oil (coconut, olive, mustard ) and then shampoo. Repeat this every week for a couple of months and your hair will be soft and shiny as silk :)

Hope that helps :)

Bismillah and Salam,
Here is a forwarded email, not so sure if it is true.

Go home and check your shampoo. Change it before it's too late...
Check the ingredients listed on your shampoo bottle, and see they have a
substance by the name of Sodium Laureth Sulfate, or simply SLS. This substance is
found in most shampoos, and the manufacturers use it because it produces a lot of
foam and it is cheap. BUT the fact is that SLS is used to scrub garage
floors, and it is very strong. It is also proven that it can cause cancer in the long
run, and
this is no joke. I went home and checked my shampoo (Vidal Sassoon); it doesn't
contain it; however, otherssuchas Vo5, Palmolive, Paul Mitchell, l'Oreal, the
new Hemp Shampoo from Body Shop etc contain this substance. The first ingredient
listed (which means it is the single most prevalent ingredient) in Clairol's
Herbal Essences is Sodium Laureth Sulfate. So I called one company, and I told
them their product contains a substance that will cause people to have cancer.
They said, Yeah we knew about it but there is nothing we can do about it because
we need that substance to produce foam. By the way Colgate toothpaste also
contains the same substance to produce the "bubbles". They said they are going to
send me some information. Research has shown that in the 1980s, the chance of
getting cancer is 1 out of 8000 and now, in the 1990s, the chances of getting
cancer is 1 out of 3, which is very serious. So I hope that you will take this
seriously and pass this on to all the people you know, and hopefully, we can stop
"giving" ourselves the cancer virus. This is serious, after you have read this,
pass it on to as many people as
possible, this is not a chain letter, but it concerns our health.

Whilst factually true, as Anonymous said it is usually used over here as an insult and a deregotary term.

It probably also brings back bad memories for some people who had to deal with name calling etc etc so generally it tends to have a bad connatation all round.

I am not from UK, but once someone said "go back to paki-land" and it really hurt me a lot... but it was more the tone and the fact that it was a "sister."

But my parents dislike the term "desi" very much... they feel that it classifies them as a race which they don't like.  They don't mind being called Pakistanis because it identifies them with a location, and also with Islam.  And its really awesome because I know a lot of people my age who hate the concept of race a lot... but its more on an intellectual level, with my parents its very innate like..."I am a Muslim, not a desi!"

Irish people are called "Paddy" in England and it's also a derogatory term. It's like "oh there's thick Paddy over from the bog.."
It makes you feel different and somehow insulted although for the life of me I can't put my finger on the reason why.
There's also jokes about "Paki's" . For example "why aren't Paki's allowed to play Monopoly? Because they'll open shops on every corner" and so on.
I suppose it's the old english colonialist superior attitude. (no offence all you Brits!!!! )

I've got two possible options for you.

You could try Nioxin scalp therapy, which you can get at the beauty salon.
I also use black seed oil in my hair.  When I can't pray I rub black seed oil
in my hair, wet of course, and then use a shower cap and leave it on overnight.
Masha'Allah it works really well.
