yep i went to the camp too - and masha'allah it was a good learning experience...

here's some of the notes (i will post the rest soon - insha'allah):

Characteristics, Attributes of a Da'iyah (Muslim Students in the West & importance of Unity)

Lecture by Sheikh Suhayb Hassan and Abu Muntasir

There are three main qualities

1. Truthfulness
2. Patience
3. Humility

Truthfulness should be reflected through your actions.  One needs to ensure that their actions conform to Quran and Sunnah.  Also that the intentions are good i.e. for the sake of Allah Azawajul.

Four things need to be concentrated on:

¨ Early Da'wa - In hadith it is recorded that he who calls to guidance receives similar reward to the one who is guided without the reward being diminished. Spending one's youth in accordance to the Quran&Sunnah equates to the actions of the prophets.

- Brotherhood - offering salaam increases love within the ummah

- Eating together - increases Baraka (blessings).

- Personal devotion - dhikr or zikr (being engaged in prayer)

One must have patience - hadiths show that tests arise in a one's life in accordance to the strength of their Iman.  The stronger your Iman the harder the test so that if you pass your test then your Iman gains more strength.

A Da'iyaa needs to be modest and humble.  They should try to comprehend their rank in society.  Someone asked Rasul'Allah (saw) the meaning of Al-Khibr and it was described as rejecting truth and looking down upon people.  Whenever one comes out of their house and sees someone they should assume they are better than themselves.  This is because if the person is elder than you, he has done more prostrations than you have.  If they are younger than you are, then they are less sinful than you are.

You need to show compassion and be ambitious to move forward.  The Da'iyaah should always check themselves for the following:

- Knowledge before practice like Quran
                                        Hadith
                                        Allah&Attributes
- Seek forgiveness for mistakes.

There are five points to benefiting from the Quran

1. Have faith in the Quran
2. Call to the Quran
3. Ponder on the Quran
4. Read the Quran
5. Memorising the Quran.

A good way to memorise the Quran is to memorise 1-3ayahs a day and repeat them each day with the new ayahs that you learn.

It should be remembered that those who inspire bad things within you are Man and jinn.  One should seek refuge in Allah Azawajul and read the last surah of the Quran.  Another thing is to check that you are in good company.  Try to mix with people and understand what they are like.  Remember to remain patient with them even when they harm you.

As a Da'iyah you need prioritised objectives:

- Ibaadah - Man and jinn were created but to worship him
- A secondary goal should be working towards Khilaafa and hukumallah
- Do not develop love for this world

Don't let the dunya penetrate in to your heart or your state will be like the person in a boat who is in danger of the water filling the boat and drowning him.

Find silent moments to ponder
Finally ensure that your sayings correspond with your actions i.e. practice what you preach.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
(By Dr Zahed Parvez)

Tasks of a Murabi/Teacher

* Help students to understand themselves
* Place them into a process of continuous self-reflection and self-   learning(Tauba- to ask Allah for forgiveness, by doing this we  acknowledge our mistakes and then reflect on them to better ourselves)
* Help them to become future orientated, to look back into their past to learn, but to focus their minds and energise to live for the future.
* Help them to understand the times and events as history unfolds.

We must always learn from the past mistakes.  Reflect on the day when you go to sleep each night and remind yourself of all the mistakes you have done, (not whether you read 1 or 2 prayers) but whether you missed a prayer, by doing this you will surely feel guilty and ask Allah for forgiveness, and better yourselves.

Give students a balanced framework of personal development, spiritual, moral, knowledge, skills and practical experience.

* Problem solving frame work

* Change perception of the problem situation
* Look at the problem from an Islamic perceptive
* Creative thinking

The teacher should help students to solve their own problems.
Murabi must be a good role model in order for the students to achieve their personal developments.

AIMS OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

* To develop human potential (specialty resource that Allah has given) to the full
* To develop inner self (motives, feelings, emotions, likes, dislikes, inner peace and happiness, contentment etc)
* To improve personal character and practice
* To develop knowledge, skills and experience
* To develop competitive competence ( and become role models for others)

To focus your life on Allah your life will be purified and you will improve all other relationships and that will help to develop an integrated personality.
Always be positive.

* One day when Imam Abu Hanifa was in a lecture someone came with a piece of paper with some bad news written on it, when the Imam had read it he said Alhumdulillah and put the paper in their pocket and carried in with the lecture.  A little while later same person came again with a piece of paper, this time with good news, and again the Imam said Ahumdulillah.  The man asked the Imam that when he brought bad news that his ships had drowned in the sea, with all his stocks you said Alhumdulillah, and then I brought good news that it was false alarm and that your ship is well, again you said Alhumdulillah, why is that? The Imam answered by saying that with bad news maybe it was haram for me have that stock so Allah saved me from it, so I said Alhumdulillah, and then you brought me good news, and Allah gifted me, so I said Alhumdulillah.

You should always have tawuqal (trust) in Allah. The bad times may seem that they are never ending but if we are steadfast and have full faith in Allah then even out of the bad that is happening something good may come out of it. Allah surely rewards people that are steadfast in akhira even if not in this world, and that is our real home.

PRINCIPLES OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
(Khurram Murad)

Personal development is your personal responsibility.

* You must be determined
* Requires a lot of personal effort
* Focus our determination towards a goal
* Strive for excellence
* Personal development must be regular and integrated into your life

What ever we do in this duniya we do it for akhira

UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF

* Understand the state of the Nafs ( ego)
* Ammarah (motives that encourage evil least conductive to self development.
* Lavammah ( self approaching)
* Mutimainah ( inner state at complete piece and satisfaction- more conducive to learn)

Constantly analyze yourselves.
What is the state of your soul?
Zikkre of Allah brings peace in the heart.

An understanding of your intelligence type provides a direction for self-improvement.

Understand your strengths and your weaknesses.

„o Character
„o Knowledge and understanding
„o Skills
„o Experience

Understand where you are: Your environment and times

„o Physical
„o Social
„o Political
„o Economics
„o Legal
„o Technology

Spend time with elders and benefit from them, look at your environment and times and then look at the situations and see what are the weaknesses so to solve the problem.

STEPS TO AFFECTIVE PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Thinking strategically (over view-think the whole life scale of your life) about yourself. What is the purpose of your life?
Develop a clear long term of what sort of person you want to be. Motivate your heart and mind.
Find mentors/teachers and network- people who will help you (who have a better knowledge in a certain field), making and maintaining links, working with each other, getting to know who the people are.
Build resources
Reflect on how you have learned.

Have positive mental attitude; faith, desire, love enthusiasm and hope.
Conquer the six ghosts of fear, poverty, criticism, ill health, old age, lost love, and death (via Tawaqul) having trusted in Allah.

Distinguish between operations and opportunities, activities and actions.

Keep on the move, break out, and don't accept the status quo.
Do a regular view and evaluation.

Not everyone will achieve but to have goals will help you in the akhira.

Islamic boundaries for Muslim Work in the West

Sheikh Salem El-Sheikhy

Our aim is to bring together the better of two goods.  Also to push the worst of two evils.  If an issue has a mixture of good and bad, then if the good is greater it will dissolve the bad.

The means and consequences of an action need to be considered.  Sometimes an action is right but the long-term consequences are not good, so the act becomes impermissible.

For instance an attacker demands money for a woman otherwise he will rape her.  Paying any money to a kidnapper in Islam is forbidden.  However the honour of the woman is ranked higher than the consequences of not paying which would be detrimental.  Therefore in this case the money should be paid.

Actions are judged in accordance to your intention.  Islam is a very comprehensive way of life and can be followed in every aspect of our life no matter where we are.

Tools of da'waa are ijhtihaadiya whereby effort is exerted through different da'waa styles to suit situation.

We cannot change the way we worship without evidences from Quran and Ahadith.  Any tools can be adopted in our dealings with non-Muslims as long as they do not involve haraam.

Our aim is to call towards Islam
In the process we must not get confused with loyalty and manners
Apply justness and fairness with non-Muslims
We are allowed to get engaged in an aspect of a non-Muslim organisation (E.g. NUS black students' campaign)

Question and answer session

Are we allowed to eat in restaurants that serve alcohol?

Sitting on a table where alcohol is served is haraam (forbidden).  It is makruh (disliked) to sit in a restaurant where alcohol is served and there is a reward from refraining in doing so.
