F1R5T P05T!!

Salaam,

Ooh, my first post.

Arright, being a typically confused Muslim, I'm filled with questions. Let's take this one at a time.. My question is, why is there a problem with cursing? (It may annoy people, but it's a question.) What's the problem with using four letter words in one's vocabulary? You'd of course prefer to be a little more refined in your speech, for articulation is a nice thing, but why the aversion to these four letter words? One could argue, they're just words...

The Prophet SAW has said that amongst the types of people who will go to hell is the one who uses foul language a lot.

assalaamu alaikum :D
I did a little research here's a hadith that may be helpful ...

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr

The Prophet never used bad language neither a "Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He used to say "The
best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character." (Sahih Bukhari)

Most 4 letter words represent umm bad things...that's why they're used...as a Muslim we are supposed to use good words and have good speech. We shouldn't be harsh or degrading and our language reflects who we are.

Assalamu'alaikum :)

Welcome :)

hmmm... just an addition... from mi thoughts....

Words are not just words... they come with meanings and attachments and an accountability to those who speak those words... well... that's why, I guess, we have to be careful with what we say.... Plus...Words also affect the heart... both to the listener and the one who speaks....

So, I guess, implementing Islamic adab (ettiquete, manners) as exemplified by the prophet is that we say good and appropriate words to those whom we speak to, inshaAllah....

Take care... see you in Bebzi stand, inshaAllah :)

[slm],

In Indian colleges and universities when you enter a college there is a phenomenon known as "ragging" that takes place. It is essentially seniors harassing the freshers for a period of time. And it has taken a very bad form in most colleges esp. engineering colleges. I went to a college where the ragging gets physical (meaning seniors can hit you). So a part of ragging is to "baptise" the freshers into use of foul language. The reasoning that the seniors used to give to me (us) was that we dont actually mean anything when we use those words. They asked me many times to curse with foul language, some inanimate thing for example  a ceiling fan or a tree on the road or maybe some other thing like dogs. And when I refused to do that, you know what I got from them. Another time some other senior again emphasised to me that these words that they use never mean anything and that none of them are bad people or go out and do any such thing. My simple response was "Crazy people speak words without any meaning" and of course their response was as usual, i.e. they just let out the anger of their hurt ego on me. Also people who use such words aren't really afraid of Allah in their hearts. Believers are supposed to tremble with fear when Allah's name is mentioned to them, how can they utter a foul word in His presence and feel good in their conscience?

Salaam,
Okay, well, here's my point.. I occasionally swear, not as a point, but out of anger, and out of bad habits. I haven't yet made it a point to rid myself of those habits (which I suppose I should get around to), but it's made me curious why some people will get really ticked over someone else using a swear word, to the point of missing the forest for the trees. Perhaps I've been a bit too desensitized to society (easy to do), but whether or not I'm swearing, I don't seem to mind if others do.
