I am faily new Mulsim. I made my Shahadah on 24 Dec 2000. My query, is this...'As a revert, (I am a divorced woman of 52 years young, I have two girls aged 20 and 21, who are in University) I raised my girls by myself for about 15 years and it was very hard going. Last year in Sept. I went to Tunisia (alone) and that is where I discovered Islam, I loved the Country, but now as a Muslim woman I am not permitted to travel alone without a certain kind of male (relative I believe) ...Am I to give up the idea of travelling altogether because I have no male relatives, and I am a rather reserved person. Your comments would be most appreciated Nurul |

assalam alaikum, I heard my fiqh teacher saying that there was an opinion in the hanafi madhab that allowed a woman to travel alone, but I do not know under what circumstances that would be allowed to happen. sorry you have to find out. salam wa rahmat'Allah (if s/o drops you off at the airport, and picks you up from destination... a resonable argument, but you need a fatwa from a scholar). |

Salaam I would be interested to know on what basis the original fatwa in the past was given? was it the womans safety? or was it to avoid the woman getting a bad reputation? and has any scholar published a book on this? jazakallah |

Salaam 'Alaikum You should really ask an Imam or teacher whom you trust. Just from what I've been told by at least two of my teachers, the issue for the woman without a mahrem is... is it better for her to remain *alone* in a place like the U.S., where the society as a whole is against Islam, or for her to travel somewhere where she would find an Islamic support system? (Not saying that any of those societies are inherently Islamic, but I think we can agree that they have less fitnah than this one). |
