as salam o alaikum, I saw this discussion at University many times and am curious what other people's views are on this question. IS it better to be a muslim living in India (predominatly Hindu country) or Pakistan (where muslims are the overwhelming majority). |

Salaam, Out of curiousity, why do you say "India vs. Pakistan" rather than, "India vs. Pakistan vs. Canada" or something? The best place, in my opinion, to live is where you have the most freedom of practicing your religion without fear of persecution. I've been in Pakistan for 9 months now, and I hear news stories all the time about how people get shot/killed based on sect differences, both in India and Pakistan. I can honestly say I've never had any fear of being shot in NY for being Muslim. My $.02. Wasalaam. ~jawad |

Assalamu Alaikum I am a primarily new muslim having lived in the US all my life. I would just like to say that I think I am lucky to live in such a country where I can be what I want without fear of prosecution. Although you are not truely safe anywhere, I would want to live in a place where there are at least a few other muslims to be associated with. Are you contemplation this for any particular reason, or are you just pondering on what the possibilites are? |

[slm] I haven't lived in Pakistan or India, but from what I've heard from those who have, there is both good and bad in pakistan. It is easier to be a Muslim in the sense that you can go pray with everyone on time and the people there are all Muslim. But I've also heard that there is alot of underground bad going on ie bf/gf, anti-hijab sentiment -- ie a sister from here who started wearing hijab here went there and took it off!!! In India, the muslims have traditionally been very well educated, the doctors, teachers, journalists etc.. but that trend is diminishing and anti-muslim sentiment is spreading among the hindus there. Anyway good question why the pakistan vs india debate? I find it extremely disturbing when muslims fight over whether india or pakistan or whose ppl are better. Let us just say that it is probably a struggle to be a good Muslim anywhere in the world in this day and age. There are environments that are better for some people though, like i would no doubt think that it would be extremely easy for me to be a good muslim living in makkah or madinah, w'Allahu alam. I would say living in the US would be better for me than India because there I would just be a traditional cultural muslim. Here I am forced to struggle and strive to be better than that. Others really get lost in the US and need to go back to their own countries... |

Assalaamu alaikum, What sometimes happen while living in a Muslim majority country like Pakistan is that one gets complacent. One may be doing all the rituals (prayers, etc) but those rituals hardly have any impact on the soul. It is like, oh everyone is doing this so I should do it as well just not to be different from others. In a country where Muslims are in a minority one has to go against the grain so to speak and strive to understand and do the rituals and thus appreciate the inner dimension of worship. This is just one view and we cannot generalize this. Many Muslims get completely lost when they go to a Muslim minority country. Wasalaam. |
