Hi :) I have been following along a lot of the posts and have posted a few times myself, but never really gave a proper introduction :) So, here goes :

I'm from the Cleveland area and I'm finishing up my first year of medical school inshallah. I really enjoy reading the posts on this board, it's nice to finally see intelligent exchange of thought online. It is a wonderful resource to have and come back to for information or a little bit of inspiration :)

If anyone has any questions about medical school and that whole process, especially for a muslimah, i'd be happy to answer them :)

Welcome aboard Sister.

Don't you feel a lot better now that you've introduced yourself properly ;-)

How long does it take to actually graduate from medical school and what do you do/where do you go straight after.

In the UK our junior doctors regularaly have to week in excess of over 100 hours a week and there have been many stories of things being diagnosed incorrectly because of tiredness on their part. I wonder if student doctors face the same fate in the US?

Welcome sister, and congrats for completing your first year. May Allah make the next three easy for you and give you khair in it. (Don't worry they go by faster than you think, though it seems long, painfully long and pointless at times while you are actually doing it :) )

;-), by junior doctor in the UK I am thinking this must mean what we call residents in the US (i.e poor souls who have finished medical school but then must go on to post-graduate training for many years before they are really fully trained and certified to practice)...if that is what you are talking about, yes 100 hour work weeks are something that is common, and yes tiredness is a concern, and there is a movement in the US towards trying to restrict the work hours for residents so they can live somewhat human lives and medical care is not hindered, but this faces lots of resistance from the establishment for reasons of both tradition, money and jobs...only one state in the US has a law restricting the work week (New York)...

So yes if this is what you were referring to, these poor people are subjected to the same fate as their UK colleagues...God help them...

thanks for the very warm welcome! alhamdulilah, it's a good feeling to be in the presence of muslims :)  and yes, Br. Khalid, I do feel better introducing myself :)  I think someone had some questions about medschool. I am in a combined 6 year program where the 4 years of undergrad are done in 2 and then the last 4 years of medschool are done after that. After medschool is when the residency training is done and that can take anywhere from 3 years up to maybe 4 or 5 and then some people do additional training too!  Inshallah I hope to be a pediatrician or maybe even a psychiatrist. I really feel that there is a need for Muslim counselors, so inshallah I hope I can help fill that need. Especially since I've known a few Muslims who were going through hard times and I think if they had someone who was a professional and Muslim to talk to, they would know where the person was coming from since Islam permeates all aspects of our lives and serves as the foundation for who we are. Or even things like marriage counselors, I think that's another area that we as young adults who will be entering that area need to have counseling in before we enter and during that time period as well.

that was kinda a long shpeel, hehe. I also wanted to share something too. Today was the memorial service for the families of our cadavers. I read a reading from some Hadith about death and dying and I think the audience was very receptive to it. We also had another Muslim read about the gift of knowledge being one of the three gifts that keeps on giving after a person has died. It was a beautiful program overall :)

welcome sr. ruqayyah. inshallah we'll all treat u well.
you mentioned med school. and i was wondering if u cud tell me a little about the whole deciding to do this as a sister, i mean u always have those ppl who continually say that "youre going to go into school and not be abble to take and waste this many years, it seems like there are more ppl discouraging than encouraging you, especially from ur close friends at that. how do u handle that.
then on top of that they always bring int he topic abt family, as in getting married and holding a family. is it impossible? is my " fate" make me go to school and give up. it just sux when the closest ppl to discourage you abt doing something like this, somehting u cant wait to do. how did u handle it?>

Alhamdulilah, I haven't really encountered a lot of discouragement, especially since my mom, as all Paki moms out there, has always had the dream of her children being doctors, hehe, but i know what you're talking about. There are always people out there who will discourage you from doing what your heart is set on doing, thinking that it is "too hard" for a girl, especially a muslim girl. If being a doctor or a writer or a construction worker is what you've always wanted to do, then go for it! (within the guidelines of Islam of course). And it goes the other way too, a lot of parents want their kids to be doctors and will force their children in that direction when their efforst are best suited in other fields. I think it's especially important these days for Muslims to go out in other fields so we have representation everywhere, not just in medicine or engineering.

About having a family, I think it's absolutely possible to do both. Alhamdulilah we have a few Muslimah doctors (hijabi's too!) in our area who have been able to do both. They've been successful doctors, and mashallah their children have turned out wonderfully. (Although I'm sure it wasn't easy, motherhood alone is prolly the hardest thing out there, and putting medicine on top of that, well, it takes a special person!)  These days, depending on what field you go into, you can have some flexibility on when you work and how often you are on call. Anything, with the help and guidance of Allah is doable if you really want it and are willing to put in the work to get there.

I think a larger issue at times is for hijabi's especially when it comes to learning how to do physical exams on each other and trying to do that when you can't strip down like the rest of the class. Alhamdulilah, our school has been very open minded and I haven't faced a lot of the problems that I know other hijabi's out there do face.

Dhikr, if you need anymore advice, feel free to email, or IM! I'm addicted to IM, hehe :)

Absolutely

Yep sounds rather unerringly familiar Br Abdul Basir. To me it seems like the senior doctors in the UK (ie the consultants) look down at the junior doctors and say "Well I had to go through what you're going through so now its your turn"

Things and attitudes are slowly changing. Either way it certainly isn't easy to be a Muslim in such an environment so all credit to all those Muslim doctors out there.

Btw Sr Jannah can we get an Ihram covered smilie for Br Abdul Basir? ;)

Welcome to the board and enjoy your stay.  I have a cousin who is doing her residency and she apparently works very long days.  Another brother I talked to mentioned he worked 36 hours straight.  Is that right?  Why do they work so many hours?
