Assalamu'alaikum :) Jazakallah, Br Uzer for starting this thread.... and shukran for those who posts the info... I really appreciate this as well, alhamdulillah :) I'm currently thinking about financial investments and insurances (takaful) as well... These past few days... I'm like worrying, mulling and thinking about the security of my family if I am to pass away suddenly or other calamities... as well as retirement fund when I retire... and my children's education bla bla bla... OK, I know that ideally I don't really have to worry about this, since, inshaAllah, my welfare would be taken care of my wali... but economically, I would like for me and my family to be very prepared and stable when such critical life events occur.... And I don't know whether these sentiments are shared by others... or perhaps, I'm just being overly worried? (erm... this is not a rhetoric question) My question is... what is the general receptiveness do you (or your local community) have towards investments/ insurance and why? coz, sometimes, I feel that we also need economic power to progress... wallahua'lam |

AsalamuAlaikum I have a question which is kind of along the lines that you are discussing. Does anybody know or is aware of any Islamic websites which discuss the permissability pension plans? I'm unsure as to whether a pension is permitted in Islam. There are also ethical reasons as to why ppl do not take out a pension e.g. most pension providers invest in companies which are not Islamically acceptable. If a mainstream pension is not permitted are there any Islamic alternatives? I know that sustenance is from Allah (swt) but I've been asked this quesion a few times and am unaware of the Islamic ruling behind it. Wasalaam |

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)
If a mainstream pension is not permitted are there any Islamic alternatives?
One "Do it yourself" alternative I've heard to a pension is buying a second property in addition to your existing property. Thus the money you would have put into a pension plan goes to buying a second home, which then can be rented out to give you income in your latter years. Obviously there are pros and cons of the above but one advantage is that your rental income in retirement can be increased in line with inflation (whilst most pensions tend to remain fixed) |

ALM Thanks for the suggestion BrKhalid. Thats a good idea. The only problem is that many scholars say that a mortgage is haram (interest payments) so one would have to save up a lot of money to purchase 2 properties. In the UK house prices are high!! Wasalaam |

But if you are in the UK there exists two Home Purchase Plans which are Shariah compliant. I've given you the link below. The Manzil Home Purchase Plans |
