Assalamu Alaikum,
I'm new here too. I'm a Sri Lankan college student
hoping to go into computer engineering here in sunny California.
I rarely post anything but I enjoyed reading the posts from other
people.

Sri Lankan arab, in the sense that I'm probably a descendant of some
arab traders who came to Sri Lanka, maybe from Hadramaut or Morocco.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Welcome to the board Abdulsamad! Looong time ago when I was kid I had a Sri Lankan friend. He was not Muslim but a really nice guy and a math whiz. We often had healthy competitions on who could solve a math problem first. And most of the time he would beat me :) Quite a genius, he graduated a year ahead of every body else!

BTW, what is the percentage of Muslims in Sri Lanka. There were a few Muslim families from Sri Lanka when we lived out in Africa.

Wasalaam.

Assalamu Alaikum,
Asim, Sri Lanka is about 7% muslim. The predominant
religion is Buddhism.

Welcome to the board akhi. Hope you enjoy it here.

So what is the condition of our Muslim brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka? I understand that da'wah wise its very active down there.
A while ago I spoke to a friend of mine who visited Sri Lanka for three weeks, he came back telling me that though the Muslims of Sri Lanka are a minority they are however the best in the subcontinent.
I bet you're feeling chuffed now aren't you? :D

Recently there has been some trouble between muslims and sinhalese.
Riots, to be precise. I guess now is not a good time to go there
for a vacation.
As for the muslims' condition, one thing that I noticed was that
the lower class muslims seem to be much more pious than the middle
class muslims (like my relatives). This is not true for everybody
but in general that's what it seemed like to me.  I think many of
the brothers are part of the tabligh jamaat.

Wassalam.

Any idea what the cause of these riots are?
Is the government restricting the activities of Muslims?
