I went to it last year, and MASHALLAH everyone did such a beautiful job! It was really inspiring, especially the pictures of beautiful Muslim women from all around the world, each demonstrating their unique culture but at the same time celebrating their muslimah identity :)  I had never heard the hijab song before, and i absolutely loved it when i heard it so afterwards i asked around and finally got a copy of it :)

I also thought the one woman who was so fed up w/ there being no clothes that were appropriate for the professional woman and then decided to make her own line of clothes for the muslim woman was awesome! she was really inspiring and i was amazed to see people putting their ideas into action.

The wedding segment was also really cool, lots of oooooh's and ahhhhh's hehe :)  Did anyone think the lady who designed all those dresses and was mc'ing that portion was a little off when she heard everyone cheering the girls on and said, "cat calling is sooooo unlady like" ! i thought the girls were having fun w/ it and then she had to ruin the mood. did anyone else notice that???

the songs were beautiful mashallah and so were the poems, i had a blast!  the only thing was that they were not letting myna girls in at first ?  i wasn't sure why they were doing that, but i was w/ my sister who was in myna and i didn't want to leave her behind. and i think the youth could really benefit from something like that.

Ruqqaya true It was a very beautiful session. I'm not sure why they weren't letting myna people in. They were extremely crowded at one point and stopped letting people in but if you waited for awhile they started letting everyone in after that. I thought it was very well done ma'shallah. It inspired us to do one here for Eid as well :)

Here's my idea Zeyn...tell them to get mehndi cones or sell them there and let the girls do designs on each other..

I think having a program like this is excellent. It totally curtails any type of macking and gives an alternative to sisters.

jannah..i'll mention the mehndi cone idea to kulsum ..she will be game for it..reason for not letting in myna kids was purely space..we had to give priority to msa ppl then myna then isna..

I'm so happy to hear all the positive comments! Alhamdulillah:)
Inshaallah the Sisters Event this year will be just as inspiring because the
theme will revolve around strength. I'm thinking about a segment called "Cool
Muslimahs" which will be dedicated to the inspiring Muslim women in Islamic
History. So if you have any comments or if you would like to be involved, please
contact me at kulsumts@yahoo.com.

Assalaamualaikum Sisters,
How wonderful to have a forum to discuss ideas! Great suggestion for the Henna:) I'll see how we can fit it in Inshaallah, maybe if the Lecture before runs late again, we can have it as an activity to pass the time. This year, we're thinking about combining the Wedding Attire segment and the Cultural Attire segment to make it "Cultural Wedding Attire." We are on a mission to get sisters to lend us their wedding outfits so that we have a good representation of the many Muslim cultures Inshaallah. Email me if for ideas or if you want to help out in the Sisters Program this year Inshaallah.

wlm kulsum,

that's a great idea! we tried that at our fashion show and it was awesome. we talked about the different traditons of muslim marriages all around the world... so before the bride came out we would talk about what their cultural tradition is ie mehdni parties for indopaks,  the king and queen thing for malaysian weddings, arab wedding parties etc and then we would have the bride come out... it was fabulous ;)
hmm..

Assalamu Alaikum,

Assalaamaualikum,
Nazia, I remember meeting you at ISNA:) That was a while back! I'll be in Texas in June Inshaallah for their rukhsati, hope to see you there!
What an awsome idea about talking about the cultural traditions! Another thing I would like to encorporate. We found a sister who can play the duff to be part of the wedding segment.
About a basketball tournament for sisters:) Would that be inclusive to everyone? Not all communities are organized enough to have the chance of creating events for sisters where they can express their creativity, get inspired, bond, gain some knowledge and have fun at the same time. There are some sisters who have not lived around Muslims and are looking for support and encouragement.
The challenge for us is to create an event where that large of an audience can feel included, get pumped up, and feel free to participate. It took a while for the sisters to warm up last year.

Kulsoom- I can't come to her rukhsati! :( Can you believe she's getting married on the EXACT same day as my brother Insha'Allah!?  So she obviously can't come here, and we obviously can't go there. :(  I was so sad, I really wanted to go!  Anyways, her wedding card is really beautiful Masha'Allah!  But I do hope everything goes really well Insha'Allah.

About ISNA, I'd love to participate!!  So what kind of outfits are you looking for?  Will the girls be modeling outfits by a specific designer, or are you asking people to bring in clothes?  BTW- do you have any pictures of the outfits from last year?  I'm looking for ideas regarding my wedding outfit, so seeing the latest halal styles would be pretty tight.  I'll email you Insha'Allah.
Oh yeah, did you all sell the outfits that were modeled, or was it just for a display type thing?

Take Care,
Wassalam,
Nazia

Assalaamaualikum:)
Nazia, I'll put you on the MSA Sisters Event mailing list for ISNA. You'll know where to meet us at ISNA, what to do etc. If you want to model, contact sister at anila anilas1@aol.com. She'll get your sizes and height etc. for the clothes Inshaallah. We used the wedding clothing line from Sila designers last year and it was too stressful. Her clothing was not meant for muhajibahs. So if we go with a designer this year, we're gonna have to be real careful about making sure that we're on the same mindset in terms of Islamic clothing. some clothes were for sale and some were just borrowed from sisters. We're gonna be doing the same, so email me if you have ideas. I'll send you a list of what we are looking for.
This is gonna be the perfect opportunity to get ideas for your own wedding clothes Inshaallah:) If you're gonna go with desi, then we'll have hijaab friendly styles Inshaallah so that you can get ideas.
You'll be getting a sisters event email soon Inshaallah:)
Love
Kulsum
