Inspired by the fashion thread...

Assalamu Alaikum,

With the summer months quickly approaching, any of you who have been to any retail shopping center know that the the clothes are getting smaller, tighter, and more non-existent than ever before.

So my question is this--mainly for the girls who don't just wear jilbabs.

Where do you all shop??

Which stores do you think seem to cater to the needs (inadvertantly of course) to us?

You can't buy pants anymore, because their all capris!

Long sleeve shirts are now 3/4 length!

Skirts now come down to mid calf!

In the winter, I wear a jacket/blazer over everything, so even if the shirt is not very long, its still pretty covering.  In the summer I can't do that :(
Oh, at the GAP they have these really cool long jackets, very trendy looking, and they're on sale for $40 now, but I don't like the colors they have left :( But anyways..winter clothes are usually no prob... my problem is summer.  Fill me in!!

Take Care,
Wassalamu Alaikum,
Nazia

Assalamo elikuim

My favourite stores are Ross, Marshalls and TJMax. They always have some full length skirts(but some are grandma type designs too :)) and full sleeves shirts/blouses - but you have to go through whole store to find these.
Also they usually have full lenght sleeves less dresses which I wear with full sleeves shirt(an alternate for your jacket in summer) .

Wasalam

salaam,

nazia r u sure u read the fashion thread because it did have somem ideas on what u can do with those

1) mid calf skirts (put a longer skirt under it, like wear a funky mid calf skirt and then a black skirt underneath cuz the black skirt will bring out the funky mmid calf skirt)

2) capris- buy one of those light loooong jackets/shirts (some are transparent which will do u noe good since u want to cover well and other arent) and wear it over the capri with a kewl shirt

3) hmmmmmm those nasty 3/4 sleeve - depending on the style of the hsirt sometimes u can wear something undrneath it, but most of the times that doesnt work out,

i usually go shopping at the stores with the latest trends (mid calfs skirts for ex) and get those and i halalize them up, the best store all us albanyians go to is H.M woohoo that is THE store hehe,

wasalaam nouha:)

Assalamu Alaikum,

Ok, you got me..I didn't read the *entire* thread, but for some reason just figured it all dealt with the skirt over pant issue.

Anyways, lately I'm really into the "professional" look, hence the dress pants and jacket..I *love* banana republic, but its so expensive :(  Though I got this *awesome* leather jacket that comes down to my knees on super clearance! :o

Oh, I bought this really pretty skirt the other day and the *only* shirt I could find to go with it was 3/4 length sleeve...and I bought it one size too big, and the sleeves come down to my wrist! (Granted its kind of big on the shoulders etc...but you can't really tell)  I got that from Lerner NY...A few months ago they had these really trendy shirts that came halfway to your knees, but looked really elegant.  I don't really like that store though :(

Ok keep the ideas rollin...

Take Care,
Wassalam

Salaam 'Alaikum

I end up wearing  jilbab a good portion of the time, not just b/c my husband says it's "sophisiticated" and "beautiful" (hee hee), but because there just isn't anything out there.  Not only am I muhajaba, but I am a nursing mom (so everything has to have buttons on the front or be two-piece, which rules out most dresses), and, after having two children, I am not rail thin either at the moment (not that I was ever rail thin, but...).  I prefer to make sure that my "Western" dress is VERY baggy on me.

My stilo has become mujalbaba / gothic / hippy  Muslima.  I collect pieces.  I have ankle length velvet skirts with NO SLITS from Layne Bryant that I bought on sale for $14 a few years ago (for Muslimas, it is best to shop the Winter Clearance sales!), as well as a black chiffon one (no slit), that I use as an underskirt.  For tops, I buy those swingy, free size Indian hippy blouses or similarly inspired tunic type tops.  I also have these very nice velvet waistcoats that I can wear over a t-shirt or another type of shirt that isn't baggy enough on it's own.  Again, from the post-Christmas / winter clearance sales, you may find that knee length long sleeved velvet dresses make an excellent "kameez" style top.  I have three and I pair them with the velvet skirts, velvet baggy pants (making my own style of S.K.) or even with jeans.

Surprisingly, Macy's Women's department (Women's meaning plus sized) has a good selection of long skirts and dresses w/o slits.  I got some by Sag Harbor (whose style is very secretary-ish) that I can pair with a long sweater or top (even though I have to pin up the elastic waist to keep them on).  I got them for $7 and they have pockets.  Sag Harbor also makes very nice cotton palazzo (shalwar style) pants that I got for $7 on sale.

A favorite thing of mine to do, is to wear a cardigan over a tanktop becuase a lot of times you can find them both on sale. Especially at Aeropostale, right now they're having a 20% off sale, so they have tank tops, and these long sleeved t shirts for only $4!

Another thing, is that a lot of times if a shirt is long-sleeved it's got a really low cut neck, so i buy those since my hijab usually is draped across my chest and it hides it, hehe ;)  I've gotten a couple of those from the limited.

Walmart definitely always has some nice long dresses that are way cheap. I got this really pretty red one that's sleeveless, but i wear a white button down long-sleeve shirt underneath and it looks nice.

Has anyone seen any of those A-cut/princess skirts on sale anywhere? I got a khaki one from express ( a very random item there considering most of their things are stuff someone would wear to go clubbin) last year, and i would love to get more-they're so much more comfortable than the straight cut ones. I'm always afraid i'm showing leg when i cross my legs or walk up stairs.

sometimes casual corner has some good stuff on sale.

I haven't been out to the mall lately, but in three weeks once finals are over, it'll be time to go shopping :)
