Tafseer ibn Kathir vs.  Noble Qur'an Tafsir

Anyone read the 9 Volume set of Tafseer by Dr. Muhsin Khan & Taqiuddin Al-Hilali on which the popular Noble Qur'an Summarized is based upon?

I haven't seen it before but am debating whether to get it or get the 10 volume Tafseer ibn Kathir. Which one do people recommend or like better?

Mind you, getting both is not an option, at least not yet.

Yes Jannah, they do have a 9 volume set.  I haven't read it though, so I can't say much about whether it's better than Tafsir Ibn Kathir.

I don't know about the credentials of the two scholars listed, however is the Tafseer of Ibn Katheer in good english...??? Also another thing is does it have good comentary, if so I'd go for Ibn Katheer. I've got some of his kitabas and they are very good. As for the Quran a scholar told me about Mariful Quran which is also good in quality.

I would definitely avoid the Noble Qur'an Tafseer. I bought it many years ago and was so disappointed that i returned it. All it was was the Noble Qur'an in expanded format with many more ahadith in it. Comments from previous mufassireen were so scant in it as if to be non-existent.

I would definitely recommend the Tafseer of Ibn Kathir though. I've got the first volume of it and am highly impressed with it. Each verse is explained on its own - with many verses being broken down into smaller parts and each part being discussed separately. The subub an-nuzool is discussed, aspects of history too, etc.

Thanks Kashif. I really liked Tafsir Ibn Kathir in what I had seen with it but I hadn't seen the Noble Qur'an Tafsir so wasn't sure how good it was in comparison. It's a bit of a disappointment to hear that they just included more hadith because it was supposed to have comments from not just Ibn Kathir but at-Tabari and others but I guess not as much as advertised.

BTW BroHanif, Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Taqiuddin al-Hilali were both professors at Islamic University in Medina.

I've read the first two volumes and all I can say is that I highly *highly* highly recommend it !!

One its advantages is that the commentary quotes from Ibn Kathir as well as other Mufasiroon (commentators on the Qu'ran) and regularly applies the verses, when possible, to the modern world.

From what I know, Ma'aariful Qur'an has not been fully translated into English yet.  Only the first two or three volumes.  I've also heard it's good.

I don't have much time to read, but have a long commute and can listen.  Any tafseers in English on tape, or on the the net ?

I have the ten volumes of Tafsir ibn Kathir and would recommend you buy them. The English is understandable and clear when explaining each ayah with many references and examples given. I have not read the Noble Qur'an Tafsir so I wouldn't be able to compare the two though.

the tafseer ibn kathir (10 volume set) i would not reccomend anyone to buy, i would wait for the Al-Firdous set... the darussalam publications abridged the abridged version of the tafseer ibn kathir and hardly gives any "meat" with the ayahs it explains... the Al-Firdous set it a lot better, even though theyve stopped production on the set for some time... but it provides lots of information compared to the darussalam one...
i dont think the noble quran is the tafseer, all ive concluded from it was that it gives hadiths that support the ayahs in the quraan, and the 9 volume set is bigger yes, but if you have the summerized verion you're good b/c the 9 volume original set has repeated hadiths in there... which the summerized volume knocks out...

We were also taught that the Noble Qur'an translation by Dr. Muhsin Khan & Taqiuddin Al-Hilali is not a very good translation, so maybe its worth being careful if you are going to but the Tafseer.

I too have been told Ma'ariful Qur'an is very good, but quite in depth. Maybe its worth going through with a teacher, if you can find one.

Thats one of the bad things about the Noble Quraan, the translation is very choppy and is filled with too many brackets :(

As far as I know, the only stuff which was taken out from Ibn Kathir in its english translation by Darussalam is the weak ahadith.  Allahu a'lam.

Brother that is only the Khan and Hilali translation of the Quran.  It does not contain Ibn Kathir's tafsir of the Quran.
